M5 or not an M5?

A neighbour has bought a used M5. He has been raving over how great the car is.
It certainly looks the business and I have been really pleased for him that he's upgraded his motor to something really decent.
He bought the car with a private reg M5 XXX, and out of interest
thought I'd look it up on the DVLA vehicle check. I turns out the car comes up with 2494CC??
Now either he's telling porkies to everyone or he's been duped in some way.
The said vehicle has M5 badge, top alloys etc and 4 pipes.
I'm not a beemer chap myself - can someone tell me how to spot if this is the real Mccoy?

IRTA The green eyed monster has visited me now that my neighbour has bought a considerably nicer car than my own. I now have an obsession in doing DVLA searches to try and bring him down a peg or two. I may have caught him out. Please help.
