First time poster so be gentle with me.....

I picked up my new (used) car at the weekend which has tax until the end of the month. So today I go to the post office to re-tax the car for six months and am told by the lady behind the counter that the tax does not actually expire at the end of the month. I tax it anyway as I remembered the tax disc clearly shows 31-10-08 as the expiry and I don't want to get done for driving an untaxed car.

Since then I have checked on the DVLA website and the "Date of Liability" is shown as 01-10-09, but this tax disc (and other prior years' discs) have been expiring at the end of October each year not the beginning (I have them all for 5 or so years).

Has anyone else come across anything like this before, it's a bit worrying that the DVLA think that my car is already taxed!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Phil

I'll probably be slated for this but I bought the car from a trader on ebay......

Yeah that's what it should mean, but I taxed it for six months so the date of liability should now be 01-05-09. If it had been a year it would have been DOL 01-11-09 not 01-10-09 as it currently shows.

It seems strange as the lady mentioned it was already taxed - but the tax disc I have only runs to the 31/10/08.......

I know where you're going with that - but yes the docs all stack up, the DVLA details are all correct, and I have loads of past receipts and MOTs all with the same Reg No and VIN details. I wouldn't have thought I'd have got all that stuff if the car was dodgy....

It's hard to keep up with all the replys - thanks!!

The vehicle status on the DVLA says "SORN Not Due". Does this mean it is SORN'd and is it now off SORN as I have taxed it????

Ah. Well that changes things! The seller obviously had declared it as SORN.

What the seller might have done is obtained a refund for remaining tax on the vehicle at the point of making the SORN. But they obviously claimed without sending back the tax disc (which is possible) so that they could sell it to you as taxed.

But your new 6-month tax purchase will have over-written the SORN so you are fine legally.
OK thanks for clearing that one up.......

Just had one more thought - As the tax I bought today runs from 1/11/08 to 30/04/09, and the car was previously SORN'd does this mean that I can't drive it again legally until November? I am a bit concerned as I have been driving it this week with a tax disc (that I thought was valid up to 31/10/08) but that now seems to be invalid.
