Hey all

Apologies first if i'm being stupid, but a friend and I are going to view and hopefully buy a car for him on saturday. Included in the price of the car is going to be 6 months tax.

Speaking to the car salesman/owner yesterday, he advised taxing the car can be done one of two ways.

1 - Either my mate can drive it home (untaxed!) and do it himself on monday at his local PO or

2 - The garage can do it, but it means putting them on the logbook as another owner for a week, so they can tax it!

Surely both are wrong!!? I said, well i didn't think we were supposed to drive home with it untaxed and wasn't too clear why they would need to be on the logbook for them to do it. I've bought cars from dealers before when the tax has been included and they haven't had to be another owner to do this! Plus, surely if they have their details on the V5, they will need to send this to the DVLA, so we'd end up driving home with no V5?!

One option is for my mate to take the V10, new keepers supplement and an insurance note for the car with the MOT certificate and tax the car, but that's assuming he definately buys it!

Unfortunately for us, we're travelling quite a way to see this car, so its not like its round the corner and we can sort it out easily and quickly.

How do normal used car garages go about taxing a car in these circumstances?

Any advice, would really be appreciated.

Gaz

I bought a car which included 6 month tax in the sale

the dealer registered it in his name ,used his insurance to tax it ,ended up with an extra name on log book
That is pretty much what i'm being told he's going to do, but when other garages have not done this, i don't know why they have to.

In the past I've had to give my insurance cert to the garage for them to tax it, no extra keeper that way.
If you're not certain you're going to buy it surely you can test drive it on trade plates (their insurance) then either ask for it to be delivered on trade plates or take out a tempoary policy there & then to get it taxed. The post office will accept a temporary policy.
I think this is the other option. I.e - If we buy it, my mate rings the insurance company and they fax something to the garage asap and we use that. Nightmare really, as pissing about with the post office after we buy the car is not something we want, with a long drive home.
