83600 HPI Car Check - car came up recovered
Discussion
so, i've finally decided, i think, on a car. thought i'd be a bit pikey and do one of these cheapo text checks to see if it's been stolen, pranged etc.
the first text came back looking good:
Bmw 328i 2.8
VIN***6707 Sep 99
2 owners
No colour changes
No stolen record
Not scrapped
Help 08444821954
so i thought, that's good, then a second one came through reading:
Help 08444821954
hm. the fact it's been mot'd I assume it can't have been a total write off, but would this mean that this car is a cat C/D? and would i find this out of i did a proper £15-20 check?

You've found it out it's a total loss with that text check. It says it's recovered, as in stolen/recovered which is usually lumped in with Cat D.
Nothing wrong with text checks but obviously it's just a text so it's not going to provide pages and pages of info. I usually use them to save on a journey to actually look at a car which it has done in the past (a car written off 3 times previously!).
If the cars decent and I want to buy then I do a full HPI with the guarantee.

hadn't thought of that, so if a car is stolen, and not even scratched it still goes down as a cat D?
If they can't find it, they have to pay out. At that point the insurance company write the car off. If it's subsequently found, it is the property of the insurance company. They will dispose of it through salvage auction or similar.Doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad buy but the price needs to reflect the fact it's a write off. The other downside is there may be little history with the car and, of course, you've no idea what damage may have been done in order to effect the theft or how it was driven by the thieves. Best case - keys stolen, car quietly driven off and stashed away. Worst case - well, who knows...

It is hardly a rare car. Find a clean one.

You can buy an M3 for that type of cash, but something looks odd about it, nice leather interior, 328i clearly well specced but sitting on what appears to be a set of 318i 15" wheels, they just don't look like the correct wheel for that car.

isn't that pretty good? price/mileage for a cat D? i'd assume i'd get very little if resale but wouldn't that be a bit of a bargain?
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2039991.htm pap pap gangsta
no, i'm not considering...
