Yeah its another of these threads but they always throw up some fun. The wife has finally set a date for me to change the car (currently in a Fiesta ST) but it comes at a price.

No.1 - After our honeymoon in August
No.2 - Must buy her a Focus ST (around £8-9k for a decent one)

Leaves me with a limited budget. Was originally afer a decent DC5 but now prob going to be out of my price range.
I want something that isnt going to allow the missus to embarress me in a straight line but after the Fiesta ST Chassis need something thats atleast close to its equal in the bends. Going to be a daily driver (30 mile round trip on pretty poor roads at times ((Fenland)) but will be used on the Black Mountain pass a few times a year and on a few PH gatherings if I get chance. Ill be the grand old age of 27 in June but still young enough not to warrent a pipe and slipper mobile.

Things that are currently on the list with pros and cons I can see:
Astra VXR - Fast but a little mental. Not got the chassis i would necessarily want.
EP3 CTR - Vtec but soon to be three generations old and lack of torque might be a pain for daily driving.
Clio 197 - Its Renault Sport but its been hammered at times in the press for various things and EVO slated its straight line performance in a recent test against other like minded hatches. Is the 200 really that much better?
Corsa VXR - Fast and fun but a bit try hand and prone to blowing up?
Golf GTI - Maybe top end of my budget so a bit leggy and maybe too sensible a choice.
Cupra 225 - Maybe getting a bit dated much like the EP3?

Can I have a sensible response and no badge bashing. And no I DONT want a BMW before anyone says.

Did look but how far behind the focus is it in terms of overall performance. Im not overly interested in the 0-60 etc but on an A-B blatt surely it would be left trailing?

Sorry the comment I made earlier regarding considering it but was it too slow was about the VRS. I love the LCR. Its possible but as I said is it maybe getting a bit dated?

The Mazda has always been reported as being a little boring and not having the said cornering abilities as some of its hot hatch counterparts. Is that the case? It also looks a littleboring too.

Sorry mate I have to consider running costs. That puts the Sub out of the equation.

The Clio 197 was reported in evo as being left for dead by cars such as the Corsa VXR during their group test of normal roads. Yes it won on the 5th gear track but theres more too it that that. Thats what I was getting at. Hope its a little clearer now.

Oh year im also 6ft3 and a 16 stone lump so struggle with a lot of sport cars for size and comfort. Thats why im after something like a hot hatch but open to options. Wifey did like th idea of a 350Z but im very aware of running costs.

No real reason why an Impreza would cost particularly more than a Focus ST to run, had a Scoob for 4 years and cost less to run per year than the previous 306Gti-6 did, although this was a bulletproof 2.0 - do hear some horror stories about the 2.5's. Would be a more interesting choice than having another hot hatch on the drive, otherwise it would be the ITR or an Elise for me.
Does the Sub not require extra servicing? Thought it required stuff every 6k?

My cousin had an s2000 and i couldnt turn the wheel as my legs were rubbing on the bottom. Was very cramped and couldnt get into a position to drive comforatbly.

Didnt realise the 'Roo servicing was like that. Always thought they were high maintenance or have i just confused them with the older models and the evo's?

Id like to narrow it down to maybe 3 hot hatches and a wildcard so i can get the test driven before I go away in August and pick something u in sept when i get back.

Im not really after a classic like a 205. It will be used back and for Wales a good 6 times a year (250 miles each way).

147.....you trying to kill me? I cant afford all those front tyres! and its foggy enough in Fenand to not need the smoke aswell. The Alfas are massively over engineered are they not? What are they like for running costs? Is its going to cripple me?

How does the Megane R26 F1 stand up to these? I know they are rapid but do they fall aart and rattle like most French cars? Also not sure I can get my head around that rear!

I thought thet were 0-60 in 6.0 seconds? Thats pretty impressive for a hot hatch?

How are they for reliability? Are they prone to have bits drop off and rattle and sqeak?

They were not on my list but warming to them a hell of a lot.

Lol read that originally as a 206 GTI not a 2006 GTI. Was going to kick u in the head lol.

Would love a Focus RS but a little concerned at the costs needed to keep it tip top and running well. It will be almost 10 years old when i get it. I heard turbos get a bit baggy by 60k plus all the costs associated with running an 'older' car. I need to polybush all round to tighten it up again plus lots of other touch ups i suppose. That true?

The 147 just seems to be too much to run and maintain for me. Im expecting a bit of a jump from my ST but most cars im looking at have a better MPG and servicing is similar in cost. The 147 is in a different league.

Anyone know how far behind the Clio 200 the 197 F1 edition is? and how does it compare to the R27?

The one series is hideously ugly and the stigma attatched to them in my area is horrific. People under 30 that drive them tend to be....ummm special. Im not slagging people off but they are not much cup of tea.

They have no torque but nor does any Vtec car and they are still great. I drive a Fiesta ST and they are not renound for torque and that hasnt bothered me. I enjoy having to work the engine when i want to make some headway. 215/5,500 Nm/rpm isnt exactly lacking. My car only has 190 Nm and weighs similar amounts so its an improvement.

I ont like the FN2. The rear is awful and they went backwards with the torsion beam suspension IMO. Id only really consider an EP3.

I simply dont like BMW as a brand or identity. I apologise if that offends some but its true.

The Alfa is going to cost too much to run and maintain and not really after a Cat D.

The mini is something that would potentially tick the boxes but isnt it a little small and feminine(no offence intended but i only ever see them driven by hot women)? I have a german shep/collie cross that would at times need a boot to be transported in around the local area so couldnt justify a hatch with no boot like the mini.

If its THAT bad why are they so highly rated by writers and are reguarly regarded as the best car in class? Not argueing genuine question.

Its not going to be a dog mobile....the focus will be used for that it just needs to have the space on the rare occasion I drive her somewhere to go out rather than walk there. An estate is a no im afraid.
