Had about 5 years out if Porsche ownership (funny, my eldest boy is 5!) havering owned lots of 996 gen 911's and quite a few boxsters & cayman's from that era upto 2006. I'm looking to get back into a Porsche, hopefully an 08 ish 997 turbo, circa 30-40k mls, I'm being told these are pretty robust?? Any advice welcome.
(I had originally planned on a gen1 C4s but cylinder score horror stories have put me off)

Reassuring then thanks, it's a manual I'm looking for, like you not really a tip fan, haven't tried a pdk. I'll be doing 4-5k a year in it. Not driven one yet, hopefully test driving one Saturday, but have heard they're quiet, quieter then a normal carrera? I do like a bit of noise (had a factory SE on my old C4S and a bonkers loud set of fabspeed Gt pipes on my C4) what are the options on the turbo? Can you still do a bypass or is it new system time?

If you are going for a "manuel" as opposed to tip, insist on a rev history printout to get some idea on the cars history.

This will invariably govern whether the car will be sold with a warranty.......
Is one over rev permitted or have I made that up?

This is the car in looking at tomorrow

lovely car you're looking at. its a shame this other car is so expensive as it has lsd, short shift and ceramics which are rare options. Way too expensive compared to rest of market but perhaps vendor is flexible re pricing. Nice spec car though. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

The seller did contact me about this car but yes it's out of my price range. Paragon have my perfect car in (GT silver with cocoa, sport classics , carbon buckets etc etc) but that's also £55k and out of my budget frown

Another slight concern on the car I'm looking at in gc is it appears to have gen2 rear lights and no turbo badge, slight concern of a rear ender?

Not really. Get it checked out anyway by OPC or Fearnsport.
Are RPM close? Fearnsport appear to be silverston?

Think I'm starting to get a little paranoid after reading some of the less than glowing feedback about Gc cars.

Tbf I actually think the lights are an improvement visually.

Ok so on the plus side the salesman was pleasent and not at all pushy, on the down side strangely as they new it was a 160ml round trip for me it was the only dirty car on the pitch, not the best start. The car was Irish, registered in Belfast and on Irish plates (not sure how this would effect resale), the rear bumper had almost certainly seen paint, the led lights didn't fit properly and the lacquer was flicking around them, evidence of a smart repair using single pack lacquer in the rear two, all four wheel centers corroded and a 25mm scuff on the front PU. They did say they'd do any paint work I pointed out but all in all not a pristine example. A quick look round some of the other stock saw a mixed bunch of some very nice stuff and some a little on the tatty side.

good shout re steering wheel. I think the fake gen 2 led lights look average. 911 Virgin have one coming in which looks good value.
Can't see anything in their site "coming soon"?

Tip does seem popular, thought it ok in my Cayenne but not sure I'd want it in a 911. Surprised no ones offering conversion to paddle shift using pdk wheel and paddles.

I want to pcp the car so private not really an option, my budget is £45k reall for a car that's only going to do a few thousand a year, if the paragon car was just a few k over I'd stretch but 10k means dipping into funds I'd rather not touch, especially as I'll loose most of the extra when I come out the other end. If I was going to £55k I'd also consider a GTS as I think these will do well residually long term.

I'd considered the above, not ideal being at the bottom end of the price range, I'll need to look at a few more but if yesterday's was representative of 997tt in that price range I might have to re think. I have considered a nice 996tt or Tts but I've had 4 996's and fancied a change, certainly not ruled it out though, especially as I think price wise they've about bottomed. My mate had a gt3 and I loved it but I'll still need the rear seats for the odd school run (2young boys). I'd also thought about a gen2 car but can't help thinking I'll do £15+ over a couple of years.
My local opc are expecting a couple in in px for 991's around Xmas so might be worth a look, gives me time to move my x5 on, snow coming next week folks smile

I wonder what sort of finance deals Nissan are doing on three year old GTRs. May perhaps be worth a look too. I can understand why you would not want a 996 again if you have already have had one. I'm sure a nice 997 turbo will turn up at an OPC or Indy if you're patient.

My cars similar to the GC car but with double the mileage and its in good condition so there are def nice cars out there of that vintage. Stick to respected Indies like RSJ, Paragon and 911 Virgin and I'm sure you'd get a very good one.
Funny you should say that, I was looking at gtr's last night!

I'm
In no particular rush though so see what turns up over the next few mths, I'm
Pretty sure there's some loved cars out there

I agree not at £150k with a few options absolutely no way. I sat in new one and then got back into mine and to be honest mine did feel agricultural and really basic in comparison. New ones interior as from a much higher class of car. More like you'd expect in a sporty Bentley - very nice indeed - though could not understand why it said Carrera around the PDK gaiter in a turbo!.

Happy with my old banger though. Its fast and comfortable enough for me - at the time people complained the newly released 997 turbo in 2006 was just too fast and too refined for its own good so the new one must be amazing - key thing for me is I enjoy swapping cogs so would struggle to swap up. Now a 993 turbo and 964 turbo. Thats the way to go!
Id love to go for a 993 turbo, just not sure it would be the right way to go for a daily drive (although I only do 4-5k pa) but need the extra rear room of the newer cars. And the roof bar facility oddly enough
