So after two brilliant years in a cooking, but lovely, 997.2 C2 with PDK I've just upgraded to a well spec'd 997.1tt in manual.

I'm genuinely on the fence about the manual/pdk choice. I loved having two hands on the wheel banging through the gears, but figured I'd have some fun in a manual for a while.

I've paid the deposit and pick it up next week, I really can't wait!

So it's out with

And in with

I'd read the tip wasn't so bad matched with the turbo because of the power, but when this manual came up, I had to do it.

The wait between paying a deposit and picking it up feels soooo long.

I overtook a brown cab Turbo S today with a brown roof. From the back I thought oh god I've bought an ugly car, but when I overtook it it looked better. I'm fairly sure it was just the brown (esp the brown roof). Sorry if you have a brown car.

I drove by Silverstone OPC yesterday so dropped in, the price differences are just frightening. They had a 997.1 4S, tip, same year, with front damage to bumper/wing (awaiting repair) marked up for only £2k less than this. Admittedly only 29k miles. Made me feel I'd got a bargain.

I do hope so. Can't wait to drive it again (I know I said that already)

Lovely car

I would say that though, owning a black/black manual 997.1 turbo coupe clap

Might be selling soon as only doing c.2k per year, and have serviced 4 times in last 7k miles - just not sure I can part with it
2k/year seems a perfectly ok level for this car. Enough to keep it fresh for many a long year, but not so few that it's a total garage queen.

I did 12k in the C2 in its 2 years, but most in the first 6 months. I reckon I'll do ~3kin this, driving ~4 times a week.

Yes, I think it is a keeper!

So first impressions are, generally, very good. But I'm not one to exaggerate and it's not all upside.

On the plus side: it's VERY quick when driven right, it's well balanced in AWD, the manual is fun, it looks sooo much more aggressive (it gets stares from the small boys that I used to be that a Carrera doesn't) , it's still easy to drive normally (it'll be well used and I ferry my 7 year old around in it) and my wife is releaved that it doesn't look like a Lambo does.

However, I'm not going to pretend that I don't miss the rear wheel drive a bit. There is a feeling in the C2 that I struggle to explain. The best I can describe it is that you feel like you are sat right on the rear axle. The turbo feels more balanced, but loses some character in that.

The other downside is the time when you don't have boost, which with my ham fisted manual short shifting so far, is too much of the time. It feels very normal when not boosting. Still this is a challenge, to get better at driving!

Oh, and the PCM2 needs to go. Beyond the PCM though, I'm pleased the interior is so much more like the Gen2 I'm used to, and love, than I realised.

I think it's just the stick. No records of anything more.

What do you think needs doing?

It has a relatively new clutch so my wallet's hoping that won't be an option for a while!

Any recommendations on a good aftermarket exhaust for these (performance over sound)?

As for the smaller jobs, back to that gear knob. The alcantera was filthy, I figured I'd have to buy new but it came up lovely with some dilute AG leather cleaner and a towel and some gentle cleaning...

After

Couple more little jobs tonight. Put a basic private plate on it to stop people who don't really know what it is wondering about the age. Didn't really think through that people are going to think my name might be Esta, which is definitely isn't, this choice was largely random. Oh well, stuck with it now...

I have since been back to the autoparts shop to get a black screw. My OCD couldn't cope...

Any thoughts on a product or service (nr Oxfordshire) that you'd trust near such a car for sorting out a somewhat worn bolster?

I might still be interested, my wife said she'd have it if it bothered me that much. She's not called Esta either though

So today's shopping turned up. It had some ropey, faded and swollen stickers in the wheel caps so they had to go. They were also coloured badges and I bought a black-on-black car for a reason, the only colour I'll forgive is the red calipers. Now I except they were probably cheap aftermarket ones and replacing them with more cheap aftermarket ones may not be a long term fix, but I think these are the ones I had on the C2 and they lasted two years.

There's a YouTube video on alcantera steering wheels and all he uses is a bathroom towel (bit rough) water and soap.

I was a bit doubtful so I used Autoglym leather cleaner instead of soap.

Then just gently work it over the surface. Rub a bit but really not too hard. You don't seem to need to scrub it.

I'd also be tempted to spring for a couple of these http://www.climarepair.com/porsche-replacement-swi... to replace the climate control buttons that peel (about 30 mins to swp over - not hard) - and the round knobs (if they've gone sticky or are marked) on the (I know you don't like it) PCM2 are £10 each from Porsche (more if you pay design911! - and a lot more from Climarepair!) - makes the cabin feel newer.
Good shout on these switches, ordered those. I got the round buttons off ebay for £15 each too.

For now I've stuck a pay-as-you-go sim in the PCM2 and will live with it. I will go for an apple play double din at some point but not just yet. So I probably will upgrade the maps. Where did you get the maps that cheap. Climarepair seem to want £75 plus £20-odd for firmware upgrade first.

Off to NewTrim tomorrow to see what they say about sorting out the bolster first.

Just the tiniest of mods today with some crested dust caps arriving from Design911. Today was really about a good wash though. Too dark to get good photos sadly and it'll probably be dusty again by the morning

Trying to decide whether to decrome the back end like I did the C2. Matt black exhausts tips are very likely, maybe a Matt black turbo badge too

Perfect, I've ordered the DVD. The dials turned up for the PCM2 today but the climate switches are still in the post.

Not hard to tell which one's the new one

Starting to all look much tidier all round

Still, it's not really the little bits that matter is it, had a nice drive tonight. My gear changes are improving!
