Hi everyone, new to pistonheads so please bear with me and I apologise if this kind of thing has been gone over many times!

I have always been keen on a Porsche but have never owned one as have never really been able to afford it. I have now been looking to get something to both enjoy but also to hopefully not lose much money on so also looking at an investment.

The 911 has always been the most appealing to me, and I have been looking at the 996 models around the 2000 - 2002 period.

Can anybody give me any pointers on what to look for when I view these models and what kind of value these should be pitched at? Do I assume that the mileage has a huge or little effect on the price, and would anybody anticipate a 911 996 Carrera (for example) to be holding the value over the next 5 years?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

All very helpful advice and all taken on board, thank you.

The intention was never for it to be purely investment, as I put in my original post I do want to drive it and enjoy it. I was just trying to get an idea if it was possible to own one and not lose a huge amount of money on it, with a possible potential of maybe breaking even.

Anyway, all taken on board and much appreciated, thank you.

Hi again everyone!

Thanks again for all the extra information, I can’t believe I have had to wait 2-3 days to thank you all, PH wouldn’t let me post due to having a current block on new members??

Anyway, I have taken all of your comments on board and my initial thoughts now have come down to choosing a 996 or 997. I have already set myself on a manual, without a sunroof as many have suggested. I would however consider the cabriolet?!?!

Based on the suggestions here, I started looking at the 996 C4S, but it seemed that it was probably out of my budget (15-20k). I have seen both of the below, opinions on whether the extra 5k is worth it for the C4S?

Thanks again all.

Sorry Rick, I had to edit my post because I had copied the wrong link (didn’t intend to include the 997). What I was getting at was is it worth spending the extra £££’s on the C4S model over a Carrera 2.

I think I have my heart set on a 996, and want to hold out to look for the right one in that ‘seal grey’ colour if possible.

Thanks again.

Digga, thanks for that. 4wd isn’t necessary, as I won’t be using it as a main car or even much in the winter. Our family car is 4wd so this will be kept warm in the garage most of the winter!!

Do I assume that the C4S is standard as 4wd?

Also, what’s the general thoughts about the convertible with an additional hard top? How does the hard top fix on and is it known for noise/rattling? Are these models still wanted?

Thank you everyone for your help again as before!

Firstly, IMI A, many thanks and I have seen this one but don't think I would get away with the yellow!!

Gary C, I definitely want a C4s and not a C2, however I appreciate your comments regarding investment, my plans had changed on this anyway so it is more of a long term thing anyway now.

At the moment, still hoping that somebody on here has some knowledge on the one I am looking to view over the weekend if I am lucky enough!

Good morning everybody. I must say thank you to all who gave me advice and help last year, I can now proudly say I am owner to a 996 Carrera 4s which I am enjoying more every day. I have had a few things done since I got it and plan to do a few more but here are some pictures for all to see.

Hi Adam,

Yes it is Meridian Silver which I love, it has several different tints in it so very unusual. I didn't put any filters on the picture! All I have had done is the bumper resprayed and the plastic vent and air duct replaced as they were broken. I have had the leather interior cleaned and refreshed.

Next on the list is getting the alloys refurbished and possibly the calipers repainting!

No interior pictures at the moment, but I can add some at some point.

Regarding Meridian Silver, I have to agree to a certain extent, in fact I disliked any silver really and my first choice was Seal Grey. However seeing this in the flesh totally changed my mind, it has several tints which the pictures do not really do it justice.

I am overall very happy with it.

Hi Rick,

I actually took a lot of your advice as you will see. I had a very specific specification that I wanted and almost got everything, my requirements were ideally:

1) Manual
2) Seal grey
3) Porsche sports exhaust
4) Twin tailpipe exhaust (just loved the look of it)
4) Porsche embossed seats
5) Litronics
6) No sunroof

I got all of my requirements other than the colour, which I have now warmed to. The car has full service history, approximately 8 Porsche stamps and the rest Porsche specialists. There was a couple of niggles with it, one being last years service had been done at a standard independent garage, but I will be taking it to a specialist this year. It has covered 85,000 which was slightly more than I wanted but it looks like it has been looked after well, the paintwork is very good. Since getting it I have had the bumper sprayed and a brand new original splitter fitted as it had a turbo one fitted when I got it which I didn't like much. Next up is the alloys which will be done before the spring.

Already loving it and cannot wait for the summer! Thanks again Rick for all of your pointers.

Hi Rick,

Thanks again. I forgot to mention I got a folders worth of invoices and details on the car, the only thing that was unfortunately missing was anything in relation to the clutch. It has to have been done surely, and the clutch feels spot on at the moment so I wasn't overly concerned.

I soon got bored of reading about the IMS and bore scoring issues, that may sound a little naïve but if it happens then it happens. I didn't want to waste all my time and enjoyment worrying about it.

I am on 911uk too thank you, same username...
