As per title what can some P'heads guys who are better informed tell me about them..I have been thinking of buying an 80s 911 Coupe and restoring it to ST spec but have absolutely no idea where to go or costs involved..I have seen a few for sale including Jay Kay's Condo green ST which might be a more cost effective option..I have also spotted another green 73 RS ducktail backdate for sale in Aberdeenshire for £69K which seems particularly good value albeit not my prefered ST..
The very first 911 i sat in back in 1979 was a green Coupe so from a nostalgia POV i really hanker after one..Another reason is that new Turbo 991s have got too big, fast and characterless for my liking..

Yes too much at £100k. At £75k I think I'd maybe run out of reasons not to purchase. Wouldn't be difficult to source an early dash or convert to ST spec - far easier than a back date I'd imagine and more authentic too biggrin
There is a very nice ST backdate in Blood orange for sale JZM for £120K..In a great colour and looks like to be in absolutely fantastic condition as you would expect with JZM.
The white one at Ruf looks like a nice RS copy which i like every bit as much as an ST especially with the ducktail.

Do you know who built it ?
I spoke to JZM on friday about this car..Its sounds to be every bit as good as a car as it seems in the extensive photos they supplied..I'm really tied up with work for the next couple of weeks, otherwise i'd make the long drive up to have a closer look..

Trust me Taffy, I’ve known Yellow for many, many years if I was looking for this type of thing I’d trust him implicitly.
My headache has nothing to do with Yellow, who i trust 100% on all Porsche matters. Its this awful weather which is playing with my head.!
I've decided to not pursue the JZN car and bide my time..At the end of the day i like to buy cars which i enjoy driving as i'm not rich enough to amass a collection or cars to store away in a locked garage..
Back to the drawing board..rolleyes

20% price reduction....clearly not had a sniff. Just shows how difficult it is to know from a buyer’s perspective what the right price is for a car like this.
I inquired about it and even then they were willing to drop to the current asking price..I've got four new Porsches on order hence the reason i never went any further..In the next 6 months i'll be making some major decisions on what cars i keep or sell as i currently have too many which are turning into garage queens due to other time consuming things like work, family, holidays etc..
I'm in danger of becoming a car collector, something i swore to myself a long time ago i will never be..!

The JZM seems to be the nicest 911 Backdate on the market currently..However i'd want one more for touring and not for tracking..This means one with rear seats and no cage..I really like the look of a Slate grey Steve McQueen 'Le Mans' look 911S but with some modern driving parts to make it more enjoyable to drive..

I know it’s not an ST , but I posted a little on the thread earlier about tyre choice and suspension advice on my 2.7 RS rep - here it is after final sesssion at Centre Gravity , sitting on Avon CR6ZZ’s - ride is now a tiny bit firmer than I’d like so will tweak a little more , but very nearly there - really loving the car, all the work has made such a difference smile

I really like that and along the same lines i'm thinking..

Just spoke at length with Rick at 911 Retroworks in West yorkshire yesterday...I was very impressed with his attitude, knowledge and advice on building me my 911 Backdate next year..They seem to be running a very tight ship with a low cost base without any fancy facilities...This really impressed me and after coming back from France next month will consider asking them to commission me a nice 911..
I really like the Slate grey 'Le Mans' look however i also like their 993 GTR..Must do more research to decide what i want from this car...One thing i want is it needs to drive really well without the reliability issues of driving an old genuine classic. I spend most of my working life solving problems and putting up with hassle and breakdowns..My precious leisure time and hobbies need to be as hassle free as possible which is why i don't want to be driving around in a genuine old classic car..

£300k puts into perspective Olive bought from Sports Purpose which was a Tuthill car and was up for circa £180k...obviously might not have been a £300k spec but even so.
Even if i had a spare £300k to spend on one i'd buy something else..At that level of investment its better to buy something already built and save over a £100K..The blood orange JZM car up for £102k had over £150k spent on it by the previous owner as an example..If i buy one i'll be looking at someone's cast off before attempting it myself..

The JZM car is nothing like an “ST” and I think the value should reflect it. I don’t doubt a lot of money was spent on the car but it’s a very individual spec with limited appeal mechanically and cosmetically.

I would rather pay more for a car with a period correct chassis and mechanical spec.
I agree with you in it being an individual choice hence the reason i never made an offer on it..I was merely using it as an example on how difficult it is to recoup the investment on any Backdate 911..I much prefer a Slate grey narrow body 'Le Mans' look with houndstooth seats and back seats..Backdates are an extremely individual thing as you say..

Tailoring an aircooled by sending it to automotive Saville Row doesn’t make it a fake. It makes it a 50 yr marriage and you’d possibly be missing out on all that fun and enjoyment. To buy a 911 and not modify to your own taste unthinkable for me. Spent 3 months in UK and put 4000 miles on a modified air cooled. Best car I’ve experienced even at 30 mph wink
You've answered the question directed at me better then i could have..I have no interest whatsoever in having an original collecter 911 in my garage which drives like a 50 year old car..All i want is a narrow bodied air cooled 911 with updated suspension, brakes and tyres. My perfect AC 911 would weigh 1000Kg and have a max 300HP or even 250HP would be fine..

Taffy, investment is the wrong word for a hotrod,it also depends on the sum of the parts fitted.
If you could find a nice s at the right money to turn into some sort of safe house for your spend,is not a bad move.Nice mods can be done with out spoiling the original.
My old 2.4s that i converted to st,never owed me a penny and could be reversed at any time, but much better car as a st though.Sold now i believe.

Does robbo not have his yellow st for sale, thats a cracking car will depreciate less than you worrying about the state of the 991rs and gt3 market all over the winter with the normalisation of the latest and greatest.smile
I have to think about the depreciation side of my cars as i'm not a multi millionaire hotel magnate.;) A nice 72 S is £175k, can't the same be done with a nice 911E which is a fraction of the price for whatever reason..

I think the point here is if you buy someone else’s build you need to go in with your eyes open and if you like it and the numbers make sense, great! If you want a bespoke build and have the details as you want, it doesn’t come cheap.

There Is plenty of rubbish out there and lots of lovely cars. You pays your money and takes your choice.
In a nutshell.
