Tough one, I did not like mine.
And many on here don't like them either.

There are a few who love them.

So no help what so ever :-)

In hind site a short final drive and some plush shocks would help fix the main couple of the things I did not gel with.
I know a certain Member La Source loves them and has enjoyed upgrading his car for years.

Essentially I’m mulling over a few cars such as the 996 GT3 ( non RS ) , a gen 1 or 2 997 GT3 or a mk1 997 RS for occasional use and in the hope I won’t lose my shirt.

Always had a soft spot for the mk2 Gt3 996 so just learning more about them.

The 996 RS I had was good ( financially) but that’s where I’m leaving that one.

997.1 CS also great car( I’ve had two of those) and the GT4 981.

Lots to consider especially given I like to drive my cars

As an owner I love mine. This is my second MK1 GT3, the first being a comfort with buckets. There is something special about a Clubbie, it feels raw almost race car like, especially having a front cage too.
I bet it’s a great car on track.

I’ve had mine around 4 years and my previous Comfort for around 6 years.
I do feel like I’ve done my 996 GT3 time and am looking to try something else so mine will be for sale possibly in the next few months - 996.1 GT3, clubsport, Speed Yellow, Manthey K400 60,000 miles - massive history file too.

The only car I’ve owned that came close was a Cayman R, you could feel Porsche were trying to make an R analog - reminded my a little of my 996.
I hear not many clubsport’s came to the UK too, so rare car.

Whichever 996 GT3 you end up with MK2 or MK1 you’ll love it I’m sure. Get out and drive one, you’ll be hooked.
Could I be cheeky and ask for a PM with some pics and details pls ?

Many tks you just never know !

You should know what you like and dislike with GT3's then.
Most GT3 are pretty flawed old and new.
So a modded car is the only way to make them work imo.
PASM has no place on the 997.1 and .2
Gearing is st on all but the 997.2 RS
I would love a modded 997.1 GT3 but my build added another £50k to the donor and these are rare as heads teeth and a bit over priced atm
imo. So no saving on what I own atm !
Many tks
What is it you currently drive?

What mods add up to 50k on a 991.GT3 ? I’m
Intrigued

Id suggest joining the owners club on Facebook, i know the 996.2 one is fairly active.

The .2 market seems kinda active on the selling front, Ashgoods look to have sold their nice blue one and JZM have 'deposit taken' on the yellow one.

I was tempted to sell mine but would need to return it to stock (ducktail, cage, non oem wheel colour, all cosmetic basically)
Cheers i have actually just join requested

Many tks for the replies.

I can see Dans car mentioned on there.

So the K400 conversion seems very popular i've noticed

Was the Mk1 Club sport official factory designation ?

Yes, Clubsport was an official factory designation. It provided a bolt in roll cage, a lightweight, single piece flywheel, a fire extinguisher, "Nomex" seat covers, harnesses, a battery cutout, centre console delete, and in the rare Mk1 Clubsport, door airbag deletion.
Tks.

Any clue on pricing for a UK CS car with say 50k miles? Cheers

Put quite simply, at 57, my days of driving around our roads at 120 Leptons are over, there's little pleasure to be gained from driving at such speeds, and a lot to be lost.
suspension in rude health, will more than suffice. Though as I said earlier in this very thread, my preference is for the earlier car, due to it's slightly more compliant dampers and springs.
This where i'm at although not quite in age but not far off!

All well and good Porsche offering a new 992 Turbo with 643HP but i dont live in Germany so pointless to me and where is the feel in that car ? Maybe i'm missing the point i dunno.

Uk legal road speeds ish is what i want to enjoy in a car that feels alive in my hands.

Old hands of course :-)

I can offer a perspective from long term ownership (15+ years) of my mk1 996.  And with owning more modern Porsche.  Many other cars have come and gone but the GT3 has remained.  A keeper.

In more modern Porsche, the speed is more apparent more accessible.  With the right trick exhaust, the sound in the more modern cars is louder, more attention seeking.  I'm thinking now of my 981 Spyder - which sounds lovely.  But somehow a bit contrived.

The GT3 engine feels organic.  Less of a "product", more of a statement a reference point for how good cars can be if a manufacturer has the wherewithall and go ahead to produce it.  Everything about the car runs true to this thought.

The GT3 demands and gets better the more time and effort you invest in it.  As something to drive for 6-12 months  and then move  on, it may not be the perfect choice.  But if you want to take the time to learn how to drive it properly, you realise there are so many layers to peel off and revel in.  It gets under your skin.  It makes you a better driver. They way it sounds, how you use its weight transfer, the sensation of that weight transfer, it's fully transparent you feel it working.  The way you lean on it in corners, steer it on the throttle, - the way you trail brake You do that and those moments get locked in your memory, you think " by God this is good". It feels like no other car I've driven. At idle (let alone at 7k+) nothing else sounds like it. Makes you feel like a hero.

Not overpowered, nor under - just right. Other cars simply feel blunt.  Quicker maybe, more immediately reveal themselves, feel less nuanced.  Rare is the car that feels more tactile, adjustable, intimate.

Its  hard to explain.  You feel somehow that the general motoring world does not know about these cars and the magic that lurks within.  Doesn't know what you know.  Maybe can't be conveyed until someone is inclined to join in.

If I may but in...

I had set my heart on a LHD... Thus I searched in Europe...

When looking for my 996.1 I tried first a one owner from new SY CS on about 30k in Geneva. History folder about 2" thick with receipts from dealers in Germany and Switzerland, right down to the expanding rivets for the front splitter and wiper blades. Tight as a drum, it rode beautifully on a set of fresh dampers. It was tactile and engaging, but to be perfectly honest, the engine while good, did leave me a bit cold. I am also a massive E46 M3 fanboy, and I have to say, the standard Mezger (if you can call something as special as a Mezger, standard) kind of lacked the fireworks found in a good S54B32.

Then I travelled to NW Germany to drive my current car. Oh my God! The minute the Mezger hit 5750 and the VarioCam ramped up, and CF airbox began to sing I knew I had to buy it. DId not even haggle. Paid the full asking there and then, in a lay bay off a rural road next to Stade. There is something super addictive about the manic nature of the engine which is imbued by the the CF airbox, exhaust and a remap.

A K400 conversion makes an already great car an amazing one...
Tks

yes they did, but...

door airbags were present
the electrical cut off switch on the bonnet is not wired in
no single mass flywheel
allegedly assembled on the normal assemly line, while the Mk1 was assembled at Wiessach by Porsche Motorsport

(the latter seems like an urban legend, but as Goebbels once said, a lie repeated a 100 times becomes the truth)
haha yes i read the same about Weissich that it was total Bollix.

Hmmm interesting differences between the Mk1 and Mk2 Cs

I think 996GT3 might be making a come back as a track weapon. Seemed the biggest split of non-RS GT3s at the Oulton park day was 996 followed by 991. A few years ago at Oulton they seemed to be thinner on the ground.

Perhaps many owners are going back to them as a track toy now everything new is numb, lifeless and knocking on 200k?

We had no problems keeping up with (and passing) the 991s! ??
Had a jump around in a 991 RS today

Lovely car but at 150k i'm not going to relax tracking it and for road use its too quick.

Also manual is still for me as im old and stubborn !
