Any love for the 997 GTS?
Discussion
Seen a couple of these lately and look to be lovely cars versus later generations.
Did get me thinking about stretching the budget and looking into the rwd variant.
Not many for sale and values seem to be a bit all over the place with the usual plethora of VERY high owner cars?
Most cars seem to be PDK - assuming this works well what other spec is deemed attractive?
The threads I have seen over the usual forums suggest these are great cars but haven’t spotted much recent chat on here.
To those in ‘the know’ what cars look attractive at the moment? Dare I ask on the subject of future residuals?!

Thanks for all the responses, it is indeed the relative rawness of the 997 that holds the appeal.
Interesting to hear opinion on manual v PDK which as usual seems to form the main differentiator/ talking point.
A tidy rwd manual coupe would simply be well out of budget I think although there are a couple of pdk cars in budget.
I’m not really a particular purist and quite like the ease of pdk but I do note the comments about the gearbox not being the most enjoyable / intuitive.
Anyone got a cab? I did think the below looks a bit of fun and is manual:

What do people think of this one? I’m going to go back for another look / test drive.
Also i’m conscious it’s quite a small market, what would be a good deal price wise? Car is SOR.

With a manual and painted centre console, that would be perfection!
And well out of budget!!What is the consensus on running outside of warranty? Or are there any decent options outside of opc warranty?
Not bothered about a bit of up keep but a box or engine issue is worrying me a bit. Done a bit of research and not heard many engine issues but the odd pdk box nightmare.
Hi all good to see the thread still going!
So went back to see the red car and liked it and having a closer look round it - it was still in amazing condition etc.
However, I then started to research more as I was going to make a serious offer for (research went into overdrive!!) and have had a real wobble due to potential PDK gearbox issues which whilst rare seem to be unfixable without a new gearbox at near to £10k fitted.
I note a couple of people on this thread have suggested it’s a brave move running one outside warranty.
The independent selling the red car said they would put it on for a 111 (at my expense) although they warned that its unlikely to be as simple as pay for the 111 plus the 2 year warranty cost. The opc will be very demanding and it will likely end up being £3-4+ k to get it through and warranties which is a lot in terms of the car value.
They seem genuine and knowledgeable so I don’t doubt their experience on this.
All a bit confusing just not sure I want to take the risk as a £10k bill would be horrific

Couple of questions chaps:
Can you get a child / baby seat in the back of one of these? Don’t have a child yet but could be on the cards in the near term.
Revisiting the opc warranty aspect, is this transferable? I had thought I could get the current owner to sort it to avoid the 3 month wait for me being able to. Rang the local opc today who said not and that the previous owner would get a pro rata refund

I was looking at this online as an alternative given My main concern is the pdk box failing:

I bought mine two and a bit years ago, with 6k on it, now has just under 10, I don't get to drive it enough, but when I do it's an ideal mix of modern enough and analog. I may move it on this year as the amount of use it gets isn't enough and it's just too nice an example to leave around, even with professional storage doing all the work to keep it warm and cosy
Give me the heads up if you are please!!Well…
Some 3.5 years on from starting this thread, my mind is once again back in 997 land.
First child arrived a week ago and in the run up the GT4 went for a Range Rover Sport for the Mrs…
I’m currently 11k miles / 18 months into an FL5 Civic Type R which is a great car but not without its frustrations. Namely it’s very wide and has a few too many rattles interior wise and it’s possibly a bit try hard with the rear spoiler etc.
I’ve been thinking of chopping the Civic and trying to run a 997 in its place - a GTS if possible but there seems to be little around and I’d want something demure colour wise (white really was the flavour of the day 12/13 years ago!!).
I do like a manual hence the Civic but it may be a bridge too far price wise.
Will lap need to try to figure out a rear facing car seat solution as there will be the odd local nursery pick up / drop off to be taken care of. Can’t see there’ ever being a need for journeys more than 5/10 mins in length.
So hard to find cars to test as they get older and dealers understandably don’t want test pilots.
Will need to see how things unfold in the coming months but worst case may be a ‘lesser’ 997.2 car.
Anyone have experience of the 997.2 base car in manual as a local club member is selling a very tidy one.
Cheers

Well, I’ve now got a GTS on the driveway! A drive this evening really confirmed to me I’d made a good choice!
Red was originally pretty low down my colour list, but everything else stacked up so I went for it… only a day in and I really love the colour!

That being said both cars on our drive our red so I do have a bit of penchant!!!
Good health to enjoy - car looks fab
Agree on the comments on the murdered interior. I bought an s2000 with a similar theme 15 years ago to save a few quid and to be fair I did grow immune to it after a few weeks when I was in the car but walking up to it seeing the dash was never fun!!
Well, i certainly won’t be in the market for a low miler and may lean to PDK. Anyone had any issues with the box?
Thoughts on the high miler at Cridfords? Seems to have good history of high miles.
Does £50k represent value at this point or not?!

Seems fair. No doubt a manual is preferable but I personally decided I'd rather have a PDK 4 GTS than a manual 4S and have't regretted it. The PDK isn't perfect by any stretch, but bearing in mind I'm in London it makes sense and you can still have fun in manual mode. I think the PDK box is supposed to be pretty solid too.
My main concern is that it will likely at least start life as my daily which would mean 18-24 months later 100k+ miles on the clock which would be unchartered territory at that point…Did wonder about a cab too - this one could be promising:

If going the pdk route anyway not going to be purist and might be nice to hear the flat 6!
