Hi All,

After a few weeks of trying various other sports cars I have settled on a 992 C2S, I really like that they have moved the 992 on significantly from the 991 in terms of speed, handling and tech (all IMO by the way!). Just feels like a thoroughly modern proposition whilst keeping that innate 911-ness (I have had a 996, 997 and 991 in the past). Every time I move away from a 911 I end up wishing I was back.

One of my questions is around what is going on with the supply and demand of these cars? I am told that there is a huge issue/shortage with new cars so that is driving up the prices of used cars. There doesn’t seem many around and decent ones are not only going for a high used price but seem to be selling in record times. There really aren’t that many on the market and they seem to be selling for £5-£10k less than their original price which seems crazy for a used car.

So, is it a really stupid time to buy a 992? I am used to getting kicked in the teeth with sports cars and depreciation but this feels like it has the potential to be way worse. If I am starting from an already over inflated price they there really is only one way to go. I can certainly wait for a while but this could go on for 6 months, 12 month ++ and I don’t really want to wait forever to get back into a new car. I am assuming their will be a correction at some point but am not really clever enough to know when and what that might look like. I really don’t want to deal with double depreciation so not really sure what to do. Lastly the prices for these new 911's has gone up a lot, as I said at the start I think they have moved on considerably but a second hand sports car at £100k seems like a lot and is also at used supercar money.

Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I am seeing any 'reasonable' priced cars going so quickly you barely have time to think about it. Was about to make an offer yesterday and in the time I was pondering it sold. Same today. I dont want to get caught up in panoc buying something I'm not 100% on but it is a bit crazy out there.

I have been told they cannot give me lead times on a new car but certainly next year some time.

As much as I would like a new car I don’t think it’s an option for me. If I knew I had to wait x amount of time I could live with that but to have no real idea and potentially keep getting pushed would drive me mad. Just going to keep my eyes open for the right used car and act quickly!

Another thing I am finding is a lack of interesting colours. Loads of silver, black etc but nothing like the Miami Blues of the 991 (not sure I could pull that colour off but you get the point!) Nicest ones I have seen are the dark blue and a grey green but not exactly jazzy!

This any good? Cue shameless pic of my 992C2S..... certainly not resale Black, Grey or White yikes

In all seriousness, its not for sale, but throwing in my take on it all having gone through the 'shall I drop £100k on a car? shall I not? Can I justify it? Can I not? Second hand now? First hand, but wait? What if? Then what? blah blah blah.....'

Well I did nearly 2 years ago, as a life long dream to own a 911. Wanted a new one, because the numbers, finance, all stacked up, and I had EXACTLY what I wanted. Yellow, like a RUF Yellowbird. I waited 9 months for that and would have happily waited for another 9.

It was pre-Covid, I went in with my head and an assumption that it would loose 40% or £40k over the first four years as all new cars do, then thinking it would stabilise out and as long as it was looked after, it probably wouldn't loose much more than £20k over the next 4, by which time it would be mine, all paid for, just in time for early retirement and a keeper forever.

As it was a 911, man maths convinced me that the financial reality would actually be better, so sod it, and so far it is, but that's not down to me being clever, its the luck of the draw.

Pleased I did it? Obviously yes, not because of the numbers, but because I see it every morning on the drive when I go to work and smile. Tomorrow night, I'm even taking it to a car show - something I've never done before (Cars in the Valley, Shelsley Walsh), which is a splendid drive out in the countryside and a catch up with a few people and other interesting metal. Intend to do a few more, and even formed a little 'Grand Tour' group with some friends for drive outs for no other reason than going for a drive.

Life is too short, buy what you want and enjoy it!

Well I decided to ignore some of the advice and and embrace others. I have put a deposit on a 2019 Aventurine green 992 C2S. Can’t decide if I’m terrified or excited?! ??

Just been for a summer evening run in my 992 'Banana' just for the sheer hell of it, still fizzing with happiness!

I went for a 18 month old one in the end. Didn’t fancy the potentially endless wait. Also might have talked myself out of it in 6 months!

I say just do it. The C2 is more than you need unless you are racing.

Having said that, at the last Silverstone Porsche Experience I went to, the quickest car was a basic C2 just like mine.

I also say chose your color and forget the rest of the options. Sportex is OK. Sports exhaust, sports chrono? no.

We are 20k down the road together and it just gets better and better.

Very nice!

I have gone for a car with Satin Aurum wheels (satin gold!). A bold choice but the car can look quite dark so the wheels really lifts it, don’t mind peacocking a little bit!

Also I have a Slate Grey/Crayon two-tone interior. I have never had a light interior in any of the 30 or so cars I have had in my life so am a little anxious about that. Seems to really lighten the cabin, will be interesting to see how easy it is to keep clean!
