Well the new Cayman S arrived and after 200 miles of driving, i have come to the conclusion that it really is the best car i have driven. I suppose at this stage i am judging on the smile inducement the cayman generates, the Aural delights from behind your headrest, and the sense it just just wants to go an go.

Perhaps i am suffering from new car blindness, i don't think so, but i'm happy to update in another 1,000 miles to see if i have changed my mind. I have been a Porkie fan for many years, started off with a 964 C2 ( which i should never have sold), then a 996 C4 then a 997 gen1 C2S (manual) and then a 997 C2S gen2(pdk). I've even mixed it up with a Panamera 4S i ran for two years (hugely underrated car) and a Cayenne Diesel (not my best decision), and compared to all of them, the 981 Cayman feels the most fun and engaging of them all. I am trying to be reserved with the right foot, but it also seems to have the oomph to more than match my last 911.

Less than a week into ownership and already had the puzzled questions why i didn't go for another 911, but i have to say, i'm glad i didn't, i love my Cayman already, and i really don't feel i am missing out on anything, quite the opposite, i think i have discovered a gem smile

Congratulations! Looks very nice and glad you are enjoying it. Mine will be arriving this afternoon - can't wait. Are you breaking the engine in on yours, low rev etc?

G
Hi Gio, congrats to you too, i'm sure you will enjoy the drive back from the dealers. I asked them about run-in and was told ( as they have on previous ones), no need for run in, just make sure it is up to temp before "giving it some". I have had a couple of blasts, but am trying for the first 1,000 miles to be a bit more gentle. Funny really, everyone says run it in, except the dealers themselves.

This subject comes up time and time again.

I'm pretty sure you can drive it petty much as "normal" for a road car, but for a couple of K miles, don't do any track events, rag it from cold, go up and down your drive in it every 5 mins, blah, blah....?

I must admit to staying under 5 k rpm for that period before troubling the rev limiter.
Thanks for that. Guess it makes sense and a good reason why i should have opened the glove box and read the manual smile I am just making sure it is warmed up before i give it a few extra revs and avoiding lots of short drives. TBH it's not much of a hardship to ensure any journeys are a little bit a longer.

On a separate note, the passenger seatbelt does rattle against the door pillar as previously mentioned on this forum.

Mine yesterday.

Done around 2k miles in mine since mid May. Rattling passenger seatbelt aside, it is remarkably vice free. Off to the Le Mans Classic in it on Wednesday, a truly excellent sports car - can't wait!

OP yours looks like a nice colour/wheel combination, hope you really enjoy it.
Thanks Rob, i have to say the Red really is lovely. I was torn on colour choice, but i am pleased with the Basalt Black and i think it works well with the Carrera Classic wheels, the only downside is the paint shows up dirt and dust very quickly. More importantly, enjoy Le Mans !

Just got mine on Friday.. not a great shot, but loving it!

Can't deny, the Blue is fab too. This is really tough, I like it in the Bassalt Black, in the Rhodium Silver, the Guards Red and now in the Sapphire Blue. Maybe i should accept I just really like the car smile

Well i have just passed 1,000 miles since new so thought it was a good point to provide an update. I could keep it really brief and say i still can't stop grinning when i drive the Cayman, but that would only be part of the story. I have kept the revs down until the oil temp is up to 85-90 degrees, tried not to drive it to the rev limit (PDK) but boy it isn't easy. I seem to have developed an unhealthy need to press the accelerator much harder than I need to, somehow needing my daily fix of induction noise and exhaust growl or frankly, the day simply isn't going to be a good one.

I love the Cayman, it just ticks every box for me, it feels so much more nimble that my 997 C2, i feel closer to the sounds and the sensation and (passenger seat belt rattle aside) i really am struggling to identify any shortfalls.... OK the Basalt black paint is a b***** to keep clean, but that's about it. My 7th Porsche and finally i have found "THE" one.

My only real issue, i chose it in Black and then people keep posting photos of it in Silver, Red, Blue, and they all look amazing, maybe it deserves something bolder than black. So in conclusion, the only limitation i have discovered so far, is possibly my choice of colors.

Glad you are enjoying it Al. Still not got to a 1,000 miles on mine yet, however the temptation to not floor the throttle requires serious discipline! I am loving the noise when pressing the sport button, it is no sports exhaust, however does it for me.

On the color front, you have not made a mistake... When all cleaned up and waxed, it looks superb and especially with those wheels! I have started to use GYEON Q2M BATHE+ shampoo, as it seems to protect the car from dirt a little better. Give it a try..

G
Thank you G. Glad you are enjoying yours too. I don't have PSE but am starting to wonder what i might be missing. Will have to investigate the GYEON shampoo !!
