Hello,
My 987 gen 1 Cayman S, bought in January this year from a dealer, had an engine rebuild in November 2018 by ECU Solutions of Essex, with a 2 year warranty. It is using large amounts of oil with no external leaks whatsoever. The exhaust smokes on startup but not afterwards. A leak test shows compressed air coming up out of the oil filler cap. Bore photos show an odd pattern on the cylinder side walls which the engineer has not seen before. Can the collected expertise of this forum's contributors help please? I would like to understand what this cylinder bore pattern indicates;

There are four cylinder bore photos showing this pattern. One of them shows oil spotting;

Lastly a photo of a valve seat area shows oil and encrustation;

The engineer's thinking is that the engine rebuild may not have been done properly and that the engine needs a fresh rebuild both of the cylinders and the cylinder heads. I'd be grateful for help from fellow Caymanites about what you consider may be the situation with this engine?

Cheers ... Chris.

This forum is great! The information and tips are really helpful.

All the information I have about the rebuild is the invoice's description of the work; 1 x supply & fit engine package as agreed (old unit internals unserviceable.)

Since the rebuild in November 2018 the car has done 3,650 miles.

My read of the situation now, after reading the replies above, is that the engine rebuilder likely fitted a used replacement engine and did not repair the original engine. The invoice says "2 years unlimited warranty non the engine."

I'll go back to the dealer from whom I bought the car and start getting the situation resolved.

Cheers.
