Electric Handbrake Question

When you put the car in P and turn off the ignition does the handbrake engage automatically or do you have to push it on yourself?

Previous car would engage the handbrake as soon as the ignition was off - albeit it was a manual.

I thought it needed to be done manually......and I just don't trust the 'box!
