Hello all,

I traded in my 2012 981 Boxster S for a late 2104 981 Boxster GTS last week. I got a good deal from my local OPC both on the trade in and the cost of the car, so the cost to change wasn't huge, especially when the S was coming up to the time when it needed a service, new tyres and a warranty extension. it felt like a no-brainer in the end. And I thought the GTS would be a better "keeper".

I love the new car, the PSE sounds amazing (although I was hoping for a few more burbles and overruns), the interior is definitely a step up with the GTS pack, and it feels just a bit quicker than the old car. It's only done 13k miles so it looks and feels really new too. Overall I am very happy with it.

However, I took it out for a drive today and noticed a definite creak when moving slowing over uneven ground. It's coming from in front of me, and is only there when the car is twisting over bumps or when decelerating hard (thus under stress), but I can't yet make out whether it's coming from the front of the dashboard or further forward (e.g. front chassis/suspension). Also I might be imagining things given the noise, but it feels like the front end is a bit less stifff than the S too.

It's a bit disconcerting, but I don't know if this is "normal" on the GTS (my 991 GT3 makes all kinds of noises so I am used to quite a bit of noise, but it doesn't creak like this). The old car definitely didn't do this. I don't know whether the really cold weather is having any impact, but it didn't seem to go when the car was warm.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks all. Due to lockdown I've been working from home and not able to get out, but I will give it a go at the weekend. Lots of thoughts to try there - thank you. I'll have to work out a way to determine whether it's coming from the suspension or the interior, I couldn't make up my mind last weekend but I'll go for a drive over a bumpy road and have a good listen.

I went for another drive today, and I've isolated the "creak"

It's coming from the steering column/casing, inside the car. Pushing down on the steering wheel makes it creak, and after undoing the adjustment latch and moving the column up and down, in and out, it's pretty clear that it's this. Not sure yet whether it's the trim that's rubbing (I'm assuming it is), but the good news is that at least I know where it's coming from now.

Next step is to isolte the exact bit that's rubbing and elminate it...

Wow, thanks Chris, I will give that a try next weekend.

It's definitely the steering column, but it's only an issue when the car is warmed up... so hopefully this will fix it.

Appreciate the tip - thank you, I wouldn't have thought of this
