I’m thinking about one of these as my next Porsche, a 3.3 not a 3.6.

Would be interested to hear from any current/previous owners about their experiences with the car.

My first ride in a Porsche was a nearly new 930 when I was 11 and the first Porsche I drove myself was a 930. Since then I’ve owned a 996 Turbo and a 997 Turbo. I do love Turbos!!

I was thinking of a 930 but thought the 964 maybe a better car due to the improvements.

Any advice would be greatly received. I’ve looked through all the ads for cars currently on the market but if anyone knows of any others then please let me know.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I do like the old school turbo engine and the way it delivers the power. I can still vividly remember the first time I drove a 930 15 years ago and planted the throttle in second coming down a motorway slip road!

RSVP911 - Yes, I understand exactly your point. The turbos are definitely more GT cars rather than out and out sports cars like your '73 RS (cloud9 btw!). But that's what I like about them. It doesn't sound too dissimilar to the 996 Turbo and 997 Turbo in that respect.

Looking up the weight difference (all figures from Total 911 which claims to take their numbers from Porsche), the 964 Turbo is heavier. It weighs 1470kg vs the 930 at 1300kg, although it says from 1985 the 930 weighed 1335kg. Though the 964 3.3 is slightly more powerful, 320 bhp vs 300bhp.

The 964 Turbo S solves the excess weight issue, coming in at 1290kg and having 381 bhp, but they only made 81 and they are way out of my price range!

I was surprised that the 964 Turbo seems to be by far the rarest in terms of numbers build, which perhaps would explain why there are fewer on sale:

964 3.3 Turbo - 3660
964 3.6 Turbo - 1437
964 3.6 Turbo S - 81

Total - 5178

930 3 litre - 2850
930 3.3 litre 78-83 - 5807
930 3.3 litre 84-89 - 11,135
930 LE - 50
930 SE - 50

Total - 19,892

993 Turbo - 5937
993 Turbo S - 345

Total - 6282

Perhaps that's a factor of what was happening in world economies at the time? The boom of the 1980's followed by recession in the early 1990's?

930 production ran for many more years than the 964:

930 1975-1989 = 14 years. 19,892 / 14 = 1,063 p/a
964 1989-1994 = 05 years. 5,178 / 05 = 1,035 p/a

Roughly the same produced per year just a shorter run for the 964.

Maybe if you like both equally just try to find the best you can of either car within you budget - they both have their charms.
Doh! Yes, of course they did make the 930 for a lot longer.

You are right, they are both excellent choices.

Prices for 964's seem to start at £90k, 930's around £75k for something useable but needing work.
