My guess is it is a combination of factors:
Ad blockers would not be necessary if the ads were not intrusive.- online use has evolved rapidly since they bought PH (increase in mobile, etc). Are forums increasing or decreasing? I sense decreasing as people moved to social media platforms (FB, etc)
- profiting from advertising is hard, especially in a world of adblocking
- monetising PH is hard - compared to some of their B2B offerings like Campaign
- replatforming would be expensive, and potentially hard to build a business case
- the original user base was loyal, but declined as Haymarket applied more stringent moderation to make it "family friendly"
- combined with the challenge of competing with the likes of Autotrader for the classifieds
I would think they make most of the money from the sales listings, but even they are proliferated with intrusive ads.
