I’ve been thinking about a 570GT. My McLaren itch has been growing and, as I didn’t make the list for a 991.2 GT3 or RS, it’s only getting itchier.

I went for a test drive the other day. It was raining so I learnt little dynamically, but got some feel for the car, it’s tractability, build quality, liveability etc. All seems good so far. Whilst there I came face to face with a few 720s. I’d seen the pics and not felt the love, but in the metal it was very impressive; the aggressive lines worked well, it has real presence. Dare I say it made the 570 look a little reserved. I haven’t yet driven a 720, but will find a chance in the next few weeks.

My questions to the PH gurus are... what’s the real life difference between a 570 and a 720? Has anyone gone from one to the other and what are your reflections? Is that added performance just unusable outside 10/10th on a race track? Are there any weird practical issues around boot size or ground clearance that matter day to day?

I do realise there is a gap in price point between a lightly used 570 at £130k and an almost new 720 at £230k and I can see the depreciation hit on the 720 will be far larger, but aside from price/depreciation...

Thanks in advance for all thoughts.

Thanks both. I do see the price and depreciation point. The 100k isn’t “gone”, it’s just that rather less of it will come back to me at the time I sell. For instance, I might lose 40 on the 570 over four years, but that number could be 80+ on the 720.

What I’m after is the gap between them in real life ownership experience. As an example, one colleague was advised by a dealer that to go for a 570 (spider) as the superior performance of the 720 was described as only accessible on track. Perhaps the extra width of a 720 makes it painful to drive on U.K roads or park anywhere? Are there niggles with the new 720 that are now ironed out in the 570? Does the extra buzz from the 720 make it feel so much more special? Those sorts of things or similar that someone who’s spent quite some time with them would know.

Keep them coming all - thanks.

Some very helpful feedback there - thanks all. I need to get out and drive one now to compare to the 570. The width is interesting - the salesman said the 720 was wider and it looked a bit wider so I took it as given.

I'm erring towards the "why get the top car in the [accessible] pecking order", at least in my initial thinking. I'll likely be chopping in two cars with a view getting this one to replace them - it's almost a straight swap. The intention is to drive it a little more than I drive each of those, but realistically still only a couple of thousand miles a year. I'm also quite a few cars into my car owning life now, heading towards 50 years old and thinking that if I'm going to have something a bit nutty then now might be a good time.

Hi jimmyslr , RS here soon but I had a ride in the 720 and it was impressive ... very .
But we are old time Pork boys .
The Porsche dealer was, eventually, won round by your racing exploits Hunter... Clearly mine weren't as good as yours (which is completely true!). The RS reviews are sounding excellent by the way. Never mind, only a car and this way it's a chance for me to try something else and go British to boot. Every cloud and all that.

I keep looking at the 720s in the classifieds every evening whilst sitting on the sofa drinking wine. Always a sign that I'm on the edge of doing something mildly rash. Right, test drive...

jimmy you are quite right , porky's nice but something special about the British option
clearly the 720 is in a different stratosphere to the baby 540 (which I collect tomorrow) but if you can

DO IT life's too short 2 friends have now gone at 41 & 42 yrs
Yes, that's where I am mentally. The 540 sounds great too. They are almost the same car in terms of tub and engine (ducks for cover...), they just get a bit shinier and tweaked up as you go up the range!

Course they aren't.

But this is PH don't ever forget.
Not sure I understand. As a powerfully built company director with god-like driving skills I need the ultimate engineering and driving precision that only the best of the automotive world has to offer. One never knows when 700bhp, hydraulically linked suspension or multiple driving modes will be needed on the run to Waitrose or collecting jimmyslr jnr from school.

PS. Not all the above is entirely accurate (and potentially none of it)

One really ought to employ a nanny for such activities.

Potentially.
An excellent point. I will hand in my VIP platinum PH membership card immediately and hang my head in shame wink

What Jimmy no nanny to drive the Range Rover on the school run ......... shame .......... no wonder not allowed to play on the global race circuits
It’s all coming clear now. I’ve been getting it wrong for so long. No nanny AND no Range Rover. I need to have a long hard look at my life.

The wisdom of Pistonheads has enlightened me once again.
