I’m in need of a winter hack, thinking of doing the unthinkable and getting a second hand Zoe. What do I need to look out for when viewing/inspecting/test driving it?

Also what are residuals like?

I’m looking at £5k or thereabouts so bottom of the market anyway. That seems to get me a 2013 car with 25k on the clock. Is the battery lease not a monthly thing with no minimum term?

I get the viewpoint of the battery lease replacing a fuel bill but I currently spend around £200 a month on petrol. I can charge it for free at work so that drops my fuel bill to the battery lease alone.

Had a quick look at the Leaf but the Zoe seems more appealing. Plan is to run it for around 6 months and then get something else.

The battery degradation seems heavy on those. From what I’ve seen most private cars with that sort of mileage still manage 60-70 miles in winter and 90-100 miles in the summer.

I guess that’s where the battery lease comes in for private users, if the battery performance gets below 75% of the original figure then it will be replaced for free.

Off to view and test drive one tomorrow, will report back.

Some interesting replies. I had a look at the Nissan Leaf. There is around £2000 difference between the cheapest battery owned Leaf with same age and mileage as the Zoe I have purchased.

That £2000 equates to a lot of monthly battery payments. I get why people aren’t a fan of the battery leasing approach but I’m fine with it.

My boss has given me the go ahead on having a charging point installed at work. I won’t be charged for the electricity usage so that’s a big saving. There is a free to use 7kw charge point at a shopping complex 2 miles or so from my house so I will hold off on getting a home charge point fitted.

That’s a decent saving. The price difference I mentioned above is based on trade/private sellers, I imagine approved used ones are even more expensive. I’m happy with what I paid for the example I’ve purchased.

There are rumours of Renault allowing customers to buy out their batteries once they get to a certain age, it will be interesting to see if that actually happens. I’m planning to run the car for 6 months or so. If I get on with it then I may keep it for longer. In that time I should make a sizeable saving on my fuel costs which is handy.

Due to collect the car tomorrow afternoon. Had a quick look on PlugShare and there are quite a few free charge points on my route back including some faster ones.

Alright so far. I’ve covered just over 200 miles since picking it up last Saturday.

Had a hairy moment last Sunday when a charging point in Mirfield wasn’t working. Just about made it to the nearest one in Birstall Ikea where it charged from 0 to 98% in 35 mins.

Managed 70 miles round town to a charge which isn’t bad considering the weather. Heading across the Pennines to Manchester tomorrow. Already figured out the best charge point to use when I get there.

Enquired about a work point and was quoted £900 so abandoned that idea. Managed to get hold of a 3 pin granny charger for £130 so I’m getting some external plug sockets fitted at home for the occasional charge.

Buy a home charger.....fit yourself. They're dead easy to do. Or pay a Sparkie for a sat, it's an hours work.
They aren’t that cheap to buy and then I’d only end up spending more on electricity at home. With the granny cable I can just leave it on charge all day at work and not pay a penny. I’m a tight northerner!

I’m lucky in that I can just plug in the granny lead and leave it on at work without anyone complaining.

I could get a 7kw point fitted at work but that then results in potential BIK issues so not bothering.

The aim for me is to run the Zoe for as long as i can without ever paying for a charge. I’ll eventually get bored and change cars like I do every 6-12 months.

Maybe, maybe not. I was a die hard anti EV, but there's nothing I'd rather drive more back and forth to work. Cheap, reliable, comfortable.

Save the actual car for the weekend. use the white goods appliance in the week.
Amen. The longer I run the Zoe the more I can save for a V8 Land Cruiser for my silly roadtrip next year.

Have you looked at the Novembers Budget release? Sure there was something in there regarding no BIK for charging EVs at work.
Just checked and you’re right. A PHer has offered me a second hand Rolec unit for a reasonable price. Will have a word with my sparky mate to see if he can fit it at my office.

Dragged my backside to the gym I pay for but rarely use tonight. There are a pair of free 7kw podpoints there so topped the car up whilst I was there.

Now 1500 miles in, still not paid to charge yet. 3 pin charging lead is coming in handy when I’m at work.
