Anyone interested in joining a group of cars for a convoy down to Le Mans Classic?

This will be happening Thursday 5th July 2018.

It’s still a long way off, but thought as tickets are now available, I’d start a thread. Timings at the moment are approximate, but will give you some idea of the most suitable crossings to book.

I’m planning various meeting points en-route to allow travellers from Calais, Dieppe, Le Havre and Caen to join. Meeting points will be a short drive inland and will be as follows:

60 minutes south of Calais 9:30am
45 minutes south of Dieppe 12:00pm
45 minutes south of Le Havre 1:45pm
45 minutes south of Caen 3:00pm (Lunch & Refuel)

Locations, routes, maps, sat nav files and timings will be issued via email.

The route will be on rural cross-country D roads taking in some lovely countryside and typical sleepy villages, arriving at the circuit around 5:45pm.

Whatever you’re driving, you’re more than welcome to join us - the pace will be reasonably quick, but I’ll slow the group down considerably in villages to ensure everyone stays together.

Any questions, either pm me or post them on this thread.

You're going to the Classic this year mate? Shame I'll miss the convoy as I'm going to the 24hr. Your 2016 Convoy was fantastic!
Thanks Potatoes! Yeah, date clashes meant I missed 2017 and can’t do 2018 either. I initially considered the Classic a compromise compared to the 24hr, but the more I hear and read about it, I’m actually thinking it’s going to be a great event in its own right.

It’s my 30th next year and my friend has just cancelled his wedding that was this weekend (pregnancy!), so we are back on and planning to go.

Where is the best place to book, direct with Le Mans? Happy to splash out a bit as it’s my birthday and would like parking / not camping.

Something like this, 3 day privilege?

Anyone any experience? http://www.lemansclassic.com/language/en/1810-2/
It’s a brave man that cancels his wedding for a trip to Le Mans! Completely justified though wink

Yep, we always book through the official site and you’ll find car parking in there too.

For those interested, the meeting up times in the OP are French local time, so when booking Channel crossings, allow for adjusting your clocks an hour forward.

Tickets booked.

The website is an 'interesting' experience.

All I need now is a car.
Nice one! Yeah, it’s a bit tricky to navigate round, particularly if French isn’t your first language. You’ve loads of time to get the car sorted (famous last words).

I am interested in this! Is there a 'hotel' or Chateau near to the track that anyone could recommend please? I'd like to take my partner, camping is not something that she would entertain.
Would be good to have you along. I’ve no personal experience of anything other than camping, but I’ve seen recommendations for this place http://www.chateau-de-chanteloup.com/en/

I've heard it's brilliant, I'd like to do it myself one day. Hey maybe we'll get to join your convoy next year, it was one of the many highlights of my 2016 Le Mans trip!
Yep, should be back on for doing one for the 24hr in 2019.

I'll already be in Europe, I'm doing a 3 week road trip in the 360 with 3 days at the Classic as my final stop.

Had planned on booking the PH camping and tickets as I'm a total LM virgin but would be interested in other options
If you happen to be in the North of the country on the Thursday, you’re welcome to join us.

I am just waiting for my mate to confirm that he's OK for the Classic.

If he is then I'd love to join your convoy. We did a part of the journey to the 24 hours on D roads this year and that drive was the icing on the cake.

Will confirm once my mate confirms.
Be good to have you along and agreed; the drive down is a big part of the event.

My first Le Mans trip and for my 30th Birthday! Will be on the Portsmouth - Le Havre crossing, early(ish) I expect, as we are coming down from N.Wales, I will probably leave Wednesday.
That's excellent - I think you're in for a great 30th!

The meeting point will be just north of Lisieux around 1:45pm local time.

I am planning to get the 06:50 Eurotunnel which arrives at 08:25 France time with a view to meeting up with you 60 mins outside of Calais.

We will be in my BMW Z4M Roadster (hopefully with the roof down!)
That’s great - there’s a few of us already booked on that crossing too, so we might cross paths before the meeting point.

Don’t forget the sun-cream!

Hi All, this sounds like fun but unless I'm a bit confused it will take 8 hours to get from the first meeting point to arrival or am I missing something?
Yeah, that’s about right. The aim isn’t to get to the circuit as quickly as possible, but to have an enjoyable drive down using some of rural France’s great roads. The route allows for breaks at meeting points, time for refuelling and a mid-afternoon lunch break.

Covering 250 miles, the stints from meeting points will be approximately, 2hrs, 1.5hrs, 1hr and 2hrs.

None of it will be on autoroutes.

Hello Miner,

As I said, we will be on the P’mouth - Le Havre, I haven’t spoken to 1st tickets yet (post booking) so will ask for a crossing that allows me to meet the group in Limiseux (in good time).

I shall email / PM you now; subject Le Mans Classic.

First proper road trip in this car too.
Email received thanks.

Same here - the car I'm bringing hasn't been used since 2011 - My kids are having bets that it won't even make it to the Tunnel.

Thought I'd just give the thread a bump onto the first page with a quick reminder to those planning on using the Eurotunnel; you can use a 'popular' supermarket’s Clubcard vouchers at a rate of 3 times their value.

Total distance from Calais to Le Mans is 300 miles.

The initial 60 miles to the first meeting point is Autoroute and the services we’re meeting at have a bank of Tesla Superchargers. The remaining 240 miles are cross-country.

The next opportunity to charge will be 160 miles later at our lunch-stop in Falaise. I think it unlikely that there’ll be a charging facility here and from a quick Google search, the nearest Tesla Supercharger is 25 miles north in Caen. I’m planning on a 45 minute lunch-stop, before we hit the road again.

The remaining 80 miles to Le Mans are cross-country.

It sounds like it might be doable in the Tesla, but the TVR surely has to be the car of choice!

Is anyone else travelling with their wife / girlfriend?

We were discussing it last week and she is rather worried as to whether there are separate shower blocks or it’s all just shared?

We have never been camping ...

Staying at the PH / AMOC / TVR campsite ...
Not sure about the Classic, but the facilities at the main 24hr event are separate and the women’s blocks always cleaner due to fewer users.

I’d expect the shower blocks on the PH site to be separate, of a high standard and maintained frequently.

Hopefully someone who knows for sure can better advise...

Hi eastsider - that's great.

Nearer the time, I'll be requesting email addresses in order to keep everyone informed of the meeting point locations, routes and times.

Depending on when we need to get down to the circuit, the PH team could well be up for this! Great idea. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the Classic more than the 24 in 2016 too smile
No pressure then! Be good to have you guys join us.

First time to the Classic for a few of us, so nice to hear that it's worth doing.

The brief details in the OP still stand, but should anyone need specifics, just let me know.

Hi Bollinger911, that's great, it looks like there will be a few of us in convoy before we've even left the UK!

I've added you to my list and made a note of your email address - thanks.
