Never been one for buying new and there are loads of highly specified cars out there these days. So, with a budget of £10K to buy a nice luxury and large car that will be used very infrequently, mostly garaged and only for family trips out on occasion. What's the best you could possibly buy these days for this budget ... in your educated opinions?

Like that, just not too sure about the front .... looks, well, just a little weird to my eyes. I am sure they are open to a little bartering.

You could get yourself a V10 and save £2k for fuel/maintanance...

Really like that, the miles are okay too. Just a little too normal looking. Great for wolf in sheep clothing kinda stuff though

Or if you just want the best spec possible, you can't beat an s class

Yeah, the S class is the daddy. That one looks like it's had a makeover at Halfords though. I know this is not the case, but it just gives me that initial impression

Bear in mind OP, all of these cars could throw up a multiple thousands of pounds bill too without too much trouble hehe
I agree, the spend on the car is not the total budget. I expect problems, buying wisely is key I suppose. Hence all input (like we have and will get here) is important

PH is great. First suggestion is over budget.
Meh haggle a bit. Someone wanting a £10k luxobarge needs to be friendly with their dealer/garage anyway laugh

I think I'd be looking at an LS460.
Yes, have been looking at these. I my mind is a strong contender. Also the 450h. Not too sure about CVT drive at the moment. The 460 is certainly big spec and pretty anonymous on the road too. Not too loud and shouty, that in my mind is a good thing.

Yep, considered this exact proposition about a year ago.

Contenders were LS460 (by repute/forums/etc, reliability seems to be in a different ballpark to the German offerings), or Mercedes W140 Coupe (which is big enough for 4 and much more stylish than the saloon). The W140 may have it's foibles, and is getting old; although there may be bits and pieces to do, it has less potential for the huge catastrophic bills.
Previously I have owned a Mk1 GS300 Sport and the Mk2 Gs300 Sport. Both were super reliable, never let me down. Importantly, they were both serviced correctly by the right people ... a must for peace of mind. That's the problem with buying a car and spending a significant sum. When it's your car, you know what's been done and the quality of what you have had done. Buying can bring a whole world of pain ... as some people really don't see it the same way. I always think, this car is for sale for a reason!! What is it!!

S class every day of the week.

This S500 on LPG would be speed, luxury and economy:

If you can put up with the previous generation and have patience to wait for a clean one to come up for sale you can get pre 2005 S600L’s (bi turbo V12 600bhp 700lbft with a remap) for under £5k. Not bad for a £100+k car 15 years ago.

I picked a 1 owner from new, 130k miler fsh for £4300 last year and the only fault it has is that the passenger side wing mirror doesn’t reset itself after dipping when you go into reverse.

Truly excellent cars, would love the following generation S600.
That's a great shout re: S600. I saw Nigel Mansell's one of these for sale maybe a year ago. I knew I should of bought it. Was abroad at the time and was just too hesitant.... Darn it

If it’s going to get infrequent use I’d strongly advise getting & using a battery conditioner.

This type of car will often throw up error codes & warning lights if the battery is weak.

Might be an idea to get some sort of code reader too. Could save you a fortune in diagnostics.
Thanks Jim, will take that advice....
