Hey there! Following a recent post of mine which went down in flames about LEDs under my car (dont worry, im not gonna do it) I was told that my car is not really a drivers car, which I totally agree with

So, could I get some recommendations on some real drivers cars? My budget is £25k (though I'd prefer it to cost less) I've been looking at the Mazda RX-7, as that has piqued my interest, or even an old vette.

Help!

Some great suggestions thanks guys! The exige looks amazing, and I love the Chimaera, definitely a consideration.

If you need a practical driver's car, you could do worse than the FK2 Type R for that money.
It doesn't really need to be practical, as long as it can fit a backpack im happy

I see lotus popping up a lot, might have to go for one of them! never really been a fan of the MX5 looks to be perfectly honest, so I dont think ill be picking up one of those anytime soon. I love the look of the older cars rather than the new (kinda boring looking) cars made these days (I say these days with a grain of salt considering im only 19 laugh ) as for the BMW, my dad would murder me if I brought one of those home, he thinks they're reserved for drug dealers! biggrin

There’s a few options based on you fully defining your constants.

Minimum seats
Minimum /maximum age of the car
Your height
Gearbox preference
Expected usage and mileage
How secure from theft does it need to be ?
Seats minimum - 1 (I dont mind)
Age, doesnt matter
I'm 5'9
manual preferred but I can do auto if it has paddles
expected 5000miles per annum
doesnt need to be too secure

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, i'm getting a great list of cars to consider smile

Forget £25k. Spend less than £2k on a well sorted RX8. Budget for a rebuild. Job jobbed.

Or just get any renaultsport if you don't mind front wheel drive.
what would you say is better out of the rx-7 and rx-8? I love the looks of the rx7 and I've heard the engine in the rx8 needs changing every 1000 miles laugh

< £20K+ Exige, R26R more porsches
Basically this. Depends on how much you will take it to the track, if at all. If you do then personally i'd discount the Porsches unless you find one that's been well sorted.

If you are doing 5k miles per year i wouldn't consider the rx8, you will rue the fuel costs. It's perfect for a weekend project/track car kind of thing, but for something that's going to get a decent amount of road use it's too expensive to run in reality.
I'll be taking to the track quite regularly (depending on what you call regular - 3-5 times/year)

What's your budget for running costs?

£25k would see you in a V12 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, or a 6 cylinder if you're not feeling that brave.

Doubt they cost significantly more to run than any BMW or Porsche with an interesting engine. And if it doesn't work out they have bottomed out and won't lose money.
I dont really have a budget for running costs as long as it's not literally 1mpg lol

With any interesting car it's not really fuel that you need to worry about.

You need to carry out proper research into running costs. It's all very well saying "I can afford 15 mpg if I have a DB7" Can you afford a £2k coil pack or £800 set of tyres?

With a BMW can you afford a £1500 computer module (happens).... and £800 tyres?
Ah I understand. I can probably afford 8-10k per year in maintenance costs etc

Crikey I don't think you have much to worry about then, just get what you want!

For clarity my older BMW's have usually cost me £1-£1500 a year outside of fuel insurance and tax. My 190e has cost over £2000 and I've only had it 8 weeks!

Unfortunately for my wallet I insist on using genuine parts and don't do cheap tyres!
I dont have many responsibilities, living with parents and all that! So most of my income is disposeable for the next few years

I didn't realise that. Well I think I'd rather an old barge on the drive and be sat in my own house than with a £25k BMW on my parents drive but each to their own!

Plenty can be had for not much money.
Kids today rofl

I'd quite like a Huracan but I couldn't live with my parents past the age of 18 so buying a house is really the priority over a car!
laugh My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to America in a few years so we're living our last parts of the UK lives with out parents until then smile

As for the 370Z Nismo, that's one I've been looking at for a while, though it'll likely be a drift event car rather than a daily/track car, though I suppose I could daily drive one.

RX7 all day. All rotaries need to be looked after.

I may have missed it but would this be your only car or just a weekend/track toy? Do you want FWD/AWD/RWD? Turbo? NA?

There are some excellent suggestions in this thread. if i had 25k and i wanted a good all round car (rather than just a stripped out track toy)...

BMW M3 of some variety
A variety of porsche
RX7
Mitsi Evo
R32 Skyline GTR
Renault megane RS280

the list could go on and on.....
I'm looking for a car that I can daily, but that would also handle well on a track.

Porsche Cayman. End of thread.
Lovely car but don't expect a gen 1 to handle track days without becoming a smokey mess.
That would be a crazy expensive Gen 1!! The OP's budget would buy a pretty decent Gen 2 S.
These seem interesting for sure!

A friend has one, great car, fast too. Different than an Elise in that it's not quite as practical (not that my S1 is) and the characteristics of that ecoboost turbo engine.

Can it fit a backpack? if so - perfect!

Yes, just make sure you check the weather forecast before you head out...or pack a coat!
I'll bring a bin bag with me everywhere :P

I really think this is the one, pretty unique
