Hi all,

As I touched on in a Mk7 vs Mk8 Fiesta ST what car thread, what are everyone's opinions on the two options above? Myself and Mrs Badger are looking to replace our Mazda 2 runaround with something small and runaroundy and a bit fun too. Budget is around £9-10k and for that money you get a 15/16 plate Fiesta with around 40k miles, Gti around 2017 model with 30k miles. I am leaning towards the Peugeot due to plusher (in comparison) cabin and generally being a nicer place to be when not chucking it around the place, big sat nav/infotainment screen and more compliant ride with better brakes (by the reviews I have read). The Fiesta is appealing more to me for chuckable fun, but I'm sort of weighing up how many times I'm going to chuck it around vs how many times I need it to do the ordinary stuff like picking the Badger child up, popping to the shop etc.

Thanks folks, cheers for the Chris that's interesting. See today I'm fancying the Ford! It seems more childish than the Peugeot and if I'm just going to use it as a runaround, maybe a little fun silly yappy car is better than the slightly more sensible Peugeot. I've got my FK8 Type R that does the sensible car thing with a decent ride and easy to drive in comfort mode, then crazy touring car in +R mode.

Well Mrs Badger favours the Fiesta so I think that makes the other choice pretty much redundant. It will be mostly her car so she has the majority vote! I will check back here if it happens, will probably run the Mazda2 for a month or two then look to get one. Sounds like you wouldn't really be disappointed by either, but the Ford just seems to induce a few more smiles.

Yes I'm quite looking forward to it, I had a Clio 182 alongside my Type R which I had to sold as I was barely using my main car in all this madness, so it will be good to get back into what seems like a modern 182.

The ST3 prices seem quite strong, I did a 'we buy any car' on a 2016 ST3 with 31k on the clock and they offered £7.5k, it was up for £10.5k. In fact most of them seem to be up for around £10k with 30-40k mileage on them. I was expecting a bit cheaper to be honest.

Well, interestingly the pendulum has swung back towards the Peugeot now! We were interested in an ST and the dealer did one of those walkaround videos and the interior put her off, saying something like "I'm not paying ten grand for that piddly little old fashioned Sat Nav screen and stty old radio." I said "but it's fun!" I said the Peugeot is apparently a bit less fun, but still up there in the fun stakes according to the reviews/owners. She said she would rather have a nicer interior and slightly less fun to drive, than fun, but poor interior. It's fair enough really, like I touched on earlier - the majority of the time you aren't chucking it round b-roads, so hey.

She's just sold her FN2 Type R and she did want to get an FK2 Type R. I thought that was cool, but then I thought what's the point in her having an FK2 and me having an FK8, she can (and does) drive that. She said she wants something newer, smaller as we've got a lot of little roads and tight country lanes near us, and not grief to park with a nice interior, still fun but not too special a car not to use it as a runaround.

Just had a look at the new Swift sport, oh dear what have they done to it? It's turned into a fat Perodua Kelisa. I think the Peugeot is streets ahead on character and interior quality. She doesn't want a Mini because its not a 'proper one', there's no point me arguing the toss. The Clio 200 EDC is out because of its hand-paddles, Honda don't make a supermini Type R (gap in the market Honda?), she doesn't want a VW Polo GTi - she had a Golf GTi edition 30 and wants a non VW. At least Peugeots don't appear to break down as much as they used to, it's normally German cars and Vauxhalls that litter the hard shoulder nowadays. You know if it's a Honda in the hard shoulder with its hazards on, that the elderly occupants have stopped for a wee.

Anyway, I digress! Going to ring about one at a Peugeot dealer in Canterbury tomorrow that looks promising. Although not too sure how test drives/viewings etc work at the moment.

Well after a conflab with Mrs Badger we have put a refundable deposit on a black 2018 208 Gti Prestige and going to see it on Sunday. It all looks to be in very good nick and it's just had it's first MOT in Feb (passed fine) and comes with 12 Months Peugeot used warranty. It's a little bit more than we wanted to pay, but the price is pretty much in line with all the others out there. In fact the price difference between private ones and dealer ones was virtually the same, perhaps covid has had an effect to bring the prices to a similar level.

Nice one. Best colour for them too imo.

It'll be interesting to see how you find the steering wheel size and placement. All the reviews moan about not being able to see the instruments but I had no issue getting the wheel in the right place to see over the top. The small wheel feels great too. I guess it depends on your height and where you like the seat.

Good luck with it and don't forget to post an update on how it goes!
Well I like to sit low and slouchy and Mrs Badger like to sit higher so hopefully one of us will be correctly positioned! I've been poking around on the 208 GTi forum and discovered that the panoramic roof has blue LED mood lighting down the edges at nighttime, I'm more excited at that than I should be. Also I didn't realise that the red outer banding around the speedo and rev counter is actually an LED light rather than red plastic. Small things please me. Obviously being French it will all stop working within a few weeks but hey it will be pleasing while it works. (Or is this a myth nowadays with French electrics?). Will report back on Sunday.

Well we viewed the Peugeot and were disappointed. The car was described as immaculate and the salesman could barely find fault with it when I asked on the phone to point out any particular areas of damage etc. There were two big stonechips, almost gouges in the bonnet, there was a scuff on leather of the driver's seat that had torn the leather slightly and the stitching was coming away. The centre band on the steering wheel looked like it had been picked at underneath and just a couple of bits and bobs that I wouldn't have expected on a car not even three years old.

It also hadn't been cleaned, there was a big splatty bird poo on the roof and there was loose change, a biro and an old receipt in the door bin. We also couldn't turn the car over, nor even put the keys in the ignition to check all the electrical bits and bobs/dials/screens were all good. Not impressed. They also couldn't refund the holding deposit we put on the car because the manager wasn't in, ffs. We both really like the car to look at and sit in though.

Well, little update - we've put a deposit down (unseen, but after viewing pictures and a good video) on a black 2018 GTi a couple of weeks ago from a Peugeot dealer. We were due to collect it last week but decided might as well wait until the 12th April where we can go into the dealership like actual humans and conduct business relatively normally, instead of car keys in a envelope in a back alley.

Hopefully it will be as good in the metal, they have just given it a service and 4 new tyres and it's just passed it's first MOT so all seems well. Will update this on Monday if all goes well.

Well it was the total opposite of the other dealer experience. Mrs Badger is now the proud owner of a Peugeot 208 Gti. The dealership guy who I've been corresponding with for the last couple of weeks was very good, absolutely no salesman guff and went above and beyond in prepping the car and making us feel like we were the only customer that mattered. Genuinely nice bloke. It was good we could actually go into the dealership and conduct business in a normal manner!

The car was very good in the metal, as described and the interior better than I'd hoped, Mrs Badger was very impressed. I drove it back as she was feeling tired and didn't want to do a longish journey in a new car. I was really impressed, ride quality is very good, seats are excellent, the whole interior is great, soft touch stitched leather (guessing faux leather but still nice) on the centre console, slick 7" infotainment, nice graphics, red LED bands around the dials and blue mood lighting in the sides of the panoramic roof. Steering wheel is fun and comically small and fun to drive with a really quick steering rack, very direct outside of the centre zone, nice bit of poke and the brakes are very good, it kind of feels like a baby Type R. I am way more impressed than I thought I would be. I've got an FK8 Type R and I'm looking forward to driving this again, that says a lot.
