Two and a half years into VX220 Turbo ownership and fancying a change - have a track day coming up which I will take the VX on then likely move it on. Previously had a 350z, NA VX220, R33 Skyline, Celica GT4 and now this and fancy moving onto something else. A few requirements:

Not looking for something that will depreciate, so at the bottom or on the upward slope of that curve
Something with AC...definitely need AC after 8 hours on the M1 in blistering heat in the VX
Something with a bit of rarity, I dont want to default to a Boxster
Circa £15k, really depends on the VX and how much I get for it, prices are all over the place at the moment

I am drawn towards picking up a mk2 TT RS. I am not much of a fan of hot hatches. I have a family of car mechanics so can get lots of work done labour free.

Any left field ideas appreciated...

Thought about that type of 911 but it is so hideous I couldn’t live with that.

Boxster no.

Got a Qashqui for the run around jobs, but when on road trips etc. VX is tough work and takes the edge off the enjoyment when you are not enjoying the driving and sat on busy A roads and motorways. Ive had 5 years total VX ownership so done my dues there. Im also approaching 50 and could do with something a bit more livable.

Cayman possibly, certainly not as common as the Boxster which I see 50 of every day.

SLK55 ... definitely worth looking at. Not silver though.

Take a good look at the 370Z:

I have to say the SLK55 is a cracking choice & a great hotrod:

Now if you can haggle hard & stretch the budget by a healthy amount then a C6 Corvette is a great fillet ti the VX220:

Some good shouts there. Not doing the 370 having already had a 350 and not a big enough difference for me.

Quite feel the urge for a V8 though!

The tvr “I’m not playing anymore and going to just inexplicably breakdown” attitude worries me lol

Could I stretch to a Maserati Gran Turismo …

So I am narrowing it down to

SLK55
BMW Z4M
Audi TT RS (possibly?)
and the Peugeot RCZ R

You want that GranTurismo mate. They look awesome, sound awesome. Really special cars. If not quite as fast as the headline figures suggest. It's a big old lump I think.
I know I do, but I think its a bit too over budget and I would be getting the very cheapest one, am I looking at a money pit lol It would be amazing though!

from my own perspective, these are all in a manner of speaking warmed over cars that are only identifiable to a petrolhead and not unusual enough for somebody who wants to be different.

Certainly the Z4m / TT RS and RCZ a can at a glance appear to be a shopping variant.

the SLK looks quite demure still but the noise of that V8 easily identifies it as something a bit more special.
Yeah agreed, I guess I want something rarer but something that isn't beating me to death like the VX is at the moment. Its hard because the VX is a driving experience like no other, such a visceral epic drive, but it is exhausting and I am getting more to the point that I have been there done it and can give my body a break for a bit!

V8 SLK55 is very tempting...

You should buy the car that you want, worrying about what others own is a bit daft IMO
The car I want is something with rarity and uniqueness. I could jump into a Boxster tomorrow with dozens of cars for sale to choose from, but where is the challenge in that. Prior to my VX I have had a 350z, R33 Skyline, Celica GT4, all very rarely seen and all great ownership experiences.

Obviously its not something that you personally would consider as part of your purchase choices, but that doesn't make it daft. Im sure whatever decision making levers you have for buying a car are very important to you, I wouldn't say they were daft.

Is the correct answer yes
wink
I know I know laugh

It would be amazing to pick up a well sorted one, I am going to keep my eyes open as I know looking at the VX220 market at the moment mine would sell at a premium in the blink of an eye so could move pretty quickly.

So why look at an SLK then?
An SLK55, plenty of SLKs but very rarely see an SLK55.

It also has other performance upgrades. It’s not the same as any other SLK. If I got one it would be the only one probably within 50miles of me, in that same radius there will be hundreds of boxsters.

Anyway I’m not getting derailed by your point of view. An SLK55 is rare and something to consider as well as being a V8 and an AMG (both on the list of must own at some point)

I appreciate that but that’s like saying an escort RS cosworth wasn’t anything special, different or rare and was just an escort. It’s obvious for any petrol head you are getting something special and something rare, just because joe bloggs can’t tell the difference is irrelevant.

If JDM car prices hadn’t sky rocketed lately I would definitely have been casting an eye there. An Evo 6 would have been one of those I would like to own at one point.

I went from a VX220 (granted sold it in 2016 when I moved abroad) to a Cayman, which I got last year, for your budget it's pretty much the only choice I reckon, slightly less fun, but with a lot more comfort and still quick. I love mine.

However that said, I sometimes wish when I got back from the US I went back to the 2 car garage to get another VX, I miss mine a lot. The Cayman is awesome and is a daily (I couldn't live with a VX daily as I'm getting older now), but I sometimes look at it and wish I still had VX.

To be perfectly honest, in your shoes, I'd keep the VX.
To be honest given the alternatives I am really considering keeping it. Will only go up in value and is such and amazing car to drive and look at.

Holy thread revival batman....

VX sold, got decent money for it.

For some reason, I convinced myself I wanted an RCZ R as the missus wanted 4 seats and it ticked the 'rare' and 'fairly quick' boxes. The amount of dogs out there has been unreal including one where the Peugeot accredited dealer wouldnt disclose an engine swap and when I called them out refused to hand me any redacted bills to show proof of replacement if I bought it.

Anwyay...

The missus has now backed down on the four seat criteria so the world of car buying has opened up somewhat...and I am kicking around the following:

RCZ R, I do actually like these and the one I test drove felt brilliant. But finding one that isn't a dog with a dealer asking silly money is tricky.
Z4 35i, love the look, obviously power is more than enough, I have been looking at the DCT gearbox and it looks fantastic, I have though read a lot of consistent reviews about the handling being very wafty and not suited for the fun bits of road trips (it munches the motorway miles but struggles on the fun roads)
SLK55, great engine, great handling, crap auto box...by all accounts. Also going to be the most expensive car in terms of day to day running
Gen 1 Cayman, im actually thinking even the 2.7 would be a good shout, it wont win any traffic light grand prix for for sheer fun its great. I cant help but find myself drawn to threads about IMS, RMS, and just about a million other things that can go wrong that are massively expensive to fix

I have also looked at E46 M3's, but am feeling I will end up in a high miler and a money pit. Scirocco R's, which seem on par with the RCZ but not as exclusive, maybe not special enough.

I really think the Z4 would be the one, if the handling was tight. First world problems and all that I know! But still find myself umming and urring.
