Best family car for reliability + MPG?

Trying to help my father pick a new car but hitting a bit of a brick wall.
His only requests were:
> It’s able to fit 4 people and has good luggage space (can be any shape, but not too small)
> Is reliable and comfortable
> Does good on fuel (petrol or diesel only)
> Upwards of a 14 plate
> Under 8k price range and under 70,000 miles preferably
I’ve said about a Skoda Rapid Spaceback and an earlier Honda Civic which he’s taking a liking to, but he wants me to try and explore down all the valleys (dealerships and websites that is
)
What do you all reckon would be a good daily mile muncher that meets some or all of the above?
