Well its an industry norm to show a grade 5 HT bolt by 8.8 embossed on the head if its metric or by three radial lines if its imperial.
IVA manual asks bolts to be min 8.8 and then states that "7/16 UNF is acceptable" as of course its motor industry norm to use 7/16 UNF for seat belt bolts so lots of bolts are imperial but marked 8.8, confused?
My car failed IVA last week and one of the fails was my 7/16 UNF bolts that clearly had the three lines. I was told these did not match despite me having pictures taken from Google showing that the bolts conform.

Then I noticed that IVA would accept "anodised" cap screws! I have never heard of anodised cap screws as this is a finish that is used on aluminium.

The fails were minor and I have found some bolts with 8.8 on the head but it is annoying to be told black is white.

I managed to find some imperial bolts that were double marked with 8.8 and the three lines (Steve it was Southampton and the problem was the three lines lined up with the flats and not the points!)
Emissions was one of the faults and that has been rectified by fitting a CAT and I know have a lovely pass sheet in my folder and all that remains is to get a number from Swansea.

The car has driven faultlessly for the 2 trips for test, a distance of 100 miles and I have to admit that the first time I set off on a freezing day with no screen I was as nervous as hell and every little noise makes me worry.
I trust it now.
The car is a Sevenesque special powered by a Mazda MX5 Turbo lump.
