Hi,

My 3000 M makes a slight rattling noise at all times when its running.

Adrian at Exactly-TVR has set the valves and they're OK. He said he's heard worse noises from otherwise healthy engines.

Could this be the camshaft moving back and forth? Maybe a thrust button is missing from the end of it.

Anyone else got a noisy V6?

Simon

Hi,

It definitely follows engine speed. I originally thought it was noisy valve clearances (hence my earlier posts a couple of weeks ago)but the clearances are fine and the noise is still there.

It does sound like the camshaft, but I think I've convinced myself of that so I'm not being objective.

I'll try removing the fan belt and see what that does.

I removed the fuel pump and ran the engine, but the noise was still there.

The car seems fine otherwise, good oil pressure etc. so I'm not too worried, just curious.

I've wondered about the worn cam as well. I was hoping that it might be possible to fix with the engine in the car.

The car is basically OK, it hasn't been used much over the last few years so needs 'fettling' as much as anything else.

I've got a new set of tyres for it and will need new shocks and brakes soon.

I'm picking up my inspection report from Exactly-TVR today, but the general opinion is that its in good shape for its age. The chassis seems OK as well, surface rust to deal with in the main. The rear section of the chassis has been saved by the shocks leaking all over it.....

I plan to keep using it over the summer and then asess what I want to do. It won't be worth restoring to pristine condidition as its not worth it - there are other cars out there that I could buy.

I do like it though, so if I keep it I won't fret about the cosmetics too much, but just enjoy it for what it is. :-)

Thanks Terminator, I'll check out the distributor as well.

I'm about to head off from Reading to Birmingham in the TVR (via Coventry...) so I won't get a chance to do these tests until next week.

I'll keep you posted.... :-)

Hi,

I tried running the engine with the fan belt off, but the noise is still there. Sounds like its coming from the back of the engine in the lifter valley (although sounds can travel well....).

The distributor shaft seems OK as well, but I just wiggled it with the dizzy still in the engine.

I'll check the valves next, although the clearances were re-set by Exactly-TVR a couple of weeks ago. The noise was still there after that.

I did notice that the noise was only intermittent immediately on startup and then became more regular as the engine warmed and the oil started flowing. Sort of like the reverse situation to hydraulic lifters.

Apart from that the car is going well and doesn't seem to use any oil or water. Oil pressure is about 50Lbs when warm at idle.

Any new theories anyone?

Thanks Terminator for the Words of wisdom. I'll probably take option 2 (maybe louder exhaust instead of radio) and see what happens.

From all accounts, its just as much work to remove the engine as it is to take the cam out in situ, so if I get to that stage then I guess I may as well go for a rebuild.

When do you plan to start your 3000S project?

Hi Davidy,

Always take them with me! Hopefully won't have to use them.

Enjoy the 911, a friend bought an early 80's SC last year, its a great car.

Can the 3000M chassis cope with more power/torque?

I guess the turbo has more, but not 300bhp+......

Hi,

No, the noise is still there (no better, no worse)and I've put about 14,000 miles on the car since last june. It doesn't seem to affect the performance, so I don't really know what it is.

One theory is that the rocker face where it contacts the valve stem becomes dimpled or pitted. When you slide a feeler gauge in to check the clearances, you will 'bridge' this depression in the rocker arm face, leading to excess clearance.

The Car Clinic does a set of roller rockers for the Essex V6 for about £135+vat. If I'm feeling keen I may try those at some point in the future.

Hi Hans,

How did you re-face your rocker arms? Did you do it yourself, or was some special treatment required?
