3000M Universal Joint questions
Discussion
Hello all.
Could anyone please tell me the type of UJ on my 3000M please, and how to service (lubricate) them? I have looked for any greasing nipple with nothin obvious to me.
How would i know if they were passed their best please?
Are the inner gaiter and outer plastic 'cover' correct for this car please? The outer looks a little lacking in protection for the outer UJ.
Please see images that may help.

Good evening all.
Many thanks for the replies.
There are definately no service nipple on the inner UJ at least. The outer as best as I can see there isn't one either. So sealed for life they must be. There is no play at all as best as I can tell. I'll look at and self debate other options as suggested thankyou.
Would I be right in assuming that by 'life' it means when play is first noticed on one then change both, or should they be changed on a regular miles/years basis?
Regarding the outer gaiter, mine is a solid plastic one, that clearly doesnt fit into or close to the upright or the shaft, as can be seen in the pic. Is that normal/standard? Cable tie comment noted thankyou for both!

Top stuff! Many thanks for all inputs.
So the gaiters/covers are back to front and incorrectly fitted by previous fitter.
Replacement UJ's - any recommendations of place to buy or TVR Parts? I used to use Dave Gerald, but isnt his stock now TVR Parts?
I have a 6" vice ready and waiting :-)
This may sound silly, but has anyone a pic of their assembly with gaiters/covers on please?
Should the prop shaft UJ's have protective covers to?

Good evening all.
Many thanks for all inputs back in April.
I now have both inner half shafts off and UJ's out. They looked reasonable but I have new ones with nipples fitted. Lovely.
One question, what is the correct procedure for removing the outer one please? More specifically, how does one remove the outer half shaft? Am i correct to assume that i need to try and remove the 20something mm nut (brake drum removed) as a starting point?
Many thanks in advance.
Matt

Hello everyone.
Slow burner this one ... but I've successfully swapped out the inner uj on both sides, thanks for everyone's advice.
I have not been able to remove the hubs from the uprights though to be able to change the outer ujs. Alan's picture is great, thankyou but am I missing something or is it just the 6fasteners holding things together and a bit of corrosion or something preventing final removal?

...my hub won't budge.....:-(
When you guys say a gentle tap.......what.....exactly does that entail....in reality please?
Soaked it in WD40...... Tried heat, but by torch isn't really man enough for that scale of component....
I've tickled it with a few hammer types.....nowt...nothing...nil movement to date....

So Adrian does exchange units then?!! That sounds a fabulous idea. I'll get in touch and see.
Otherwise, is it that difficult pressing out old and in new bearings and getting the right pre-load on the squash tube?
I haven't stripped it, seen an exploded assembly view or read any 'how to guide (if one exists...)' yet, but is it not tightening torque that dictates the preload in this case?
Which bearings are recommended? There are so many cheap, useless alternatives on the market these days.....you pays what you get for....
