K and N Filters sizes

With my 2 TVRs they both have "K and N" Filtres but NOT the same size.
On the 3000M it is 1 cms higher than on the 3000S which to me is a very big difference.
I can see why on the 3000S it thinner because of the Bonnet height. Surely the breathing capacity is not the same and should be reflected in different Jetting of Carb.
How is the height/thickness of the "K and N" calculated or do people just guess.

Hi Nige,
sorry i should have explained better.
On both cars it's K and N complet Filtres. There is no original Air box. They are the ovale chrome box with filtre inside.
On the 3000m it is 1 cms higher/thicker than on the 3000S.
I wondered why people fit these and remove the original Air box. Maybe for some "Bling"

I have just fitted this now.

With Cone Filtre at the front of the moulded in Ducting in front of Rad

That's strange because on my 3000M the "Bling" K and N is 1 cms higher than what was on the 3000S and clears the Bonnet easily.
The height of the Bonnet on a 3000S is a lot lower than on a 3000M.
