Engineered rule bending
Discussion
Any good stories on rule bending (cough cheating!) on Cars ? (+ bikes?)
A few I can think of are the tilting mechanism than linked to the brakes (each side/rear ??) of DTM E30's & was only found after they were sold on, Toyota's expanding inlet on GpA Celica's & the 3rd pedal + seccret traction control in F1.

Tom Walkinshaw Racing adjusting the rear strut mount points on the Rover 3500. When they got caught they tried to claim the bodyshell was a standard, but export-only, variation.

I can't believe the Toyota restrictor plate fiddle only got a cursory 'they had one, and got banned from motorsport'.
It's one of the cleverest cheats ever.
The cleverness was in the fact that when the airbox was opened for inspection, the modification that bypassed the restrictor plate literally hid itself thanks to a spring loaded mechanism that snapped the gap shut.
They only got found out because they got greedy at the Safari Rally (do you also remember when the WRC was not some soft-cock mince about on a couple of re-run stages?) and were clocked at silly top speeds.

The group a 'dodge' wasn't actually found to be in breach of the rules...It's one of the cleverest cheats ever.

....just the spirit of the rules, hence the two year ban...

Great thread this
ISTR in the BTCC during the 90s the Vauxhalls (I think) made the car underweight, so they had to run ballast. Normally you'd place this to optimise weight distribution, but they started putting it in the rear bumper, and fixing it with breakaway bolts. One slight tap from the car behind, bye-bye bumper, and the car is suddenly many kilos lighter.
I think the number of dropped bumpers eventually gave the game away.

More Mr Walkinshaw, in the form of an article on the how the Volvo 850 heads were modified: http://www.clubgti.com/downloads/Volvo_850_head.pd...
I remember getting a right telling off for videoing an open engine bay of the Volvo the day after the 94 BTTC at Knockhill, esp as I kept filming as I didn't understand him shouting in Swedish !!Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
