Anything from a C1 to something fast
Nice. We have kept the C1 back as we are running it out at Spa in a few weeks. We’ll be back in the Compacts for RoR again this year. Did you enter last year?

Stints are still the same! Still just as knackered at the end hehe

We might not relay next year however this year it was good we did, one car blew an engine and another broke an engine mount and parted ways with its bonnet pins!

No, no ABS on ours. Just a 1.8 rover engine and box and added lightness. wink

Surprised if it was spitting flames. It was using no fuel all weekend!
Hmm might have been another white Lotus then, there were a couple! You all look the same at 100+mph into a hairpin from where I sit hahaha

Glad the minimum lap time stuff was dropped, always thought it was silly.

We came 2nd in 1600cc class and first non relay in the class. I was not driving this year but had fun working as crew.

I also agree that relay is not proper endurance racing. So much easier to handle change in conditions or technical problems when you’re running multiple cars.
Bugger I knew that was you I was going to say hi but felt off going "Don't i know you from the internet?" hehe

I was meant to put my PH smilie on the car to let other PHers know it was ok to approach but forgot!

I dunno, results are pretty plain to see who is and is not relay! Of the top 20 13 were relay teams, of the remaining 20(ish) only 1 team was a relay team!

Of the top ten, the top eight were relay teams (7 Caterhams of various configurations, one Elise relay team), the following two were Elise's designed for endurance racing, then in P11 the RKC/TGM Sport guys (that lovely Civic) who are usually found circulating places like Spa etc for 24 hours at a time.

So between 10 and 20 there are 5 relay teams, so an even split, we were P20 last but one of the relay teams, we turned up with three cars (not the four suggested on the results) and four drivers, all our cars are sprint cars designed for 15 min races and it showed.

We are considering none relay next year in the Compact Cup class again but its alot of prep work and money to spend on one of the cars setting it up for endurance rather than Sprint. All of this might see us move to a C1 for next year, it might not though smile

Relaying wasn't cheating for us, just financially sensible(ish, my car needs a new everything hehe )

Not all relay teams have an advantage and not all can run flat out without reliability issues, we were at 90% in the cars and went through 3 engine mounts, one engine, one bonnet pin (and thus a bonnet, roof and wings) and a radiator!

I'll grant you if we had been a single car team then that would have been that when the engine went but when you consider the team who followed us home P2 in class finished only 2 laps down (and we lent them parts and help in the spirit of the event) then really our only advantage was better timed pit stops. They also run endurance in their cars so they are setup for it, ours run sprints, one car was finished just as scrutineering started (we were still wiring in the rain light when they came round) one car had been finished the week before because it required a new engine and it hadn't raced since RoR 2016 and was completely untested and the third car had just returned from the Nürburgring as one of the guys is doing his VLN stuff to do a 24hr there next year! We really weren't very well prepared hehe we got lucky truth be told!

Still a great weekend and if we cant relay in 2018 we wont worry about it, we'll just get stuck in and maybe a little more prepared smile

Top job, we are entered already!

Confused about the relay stuff, so we cant win overall (we couldn't anyway) but can win relay and class or just relay?

Going to be interesting having classes on engine cc and seemingly power to weight!

Surely better to do one or the other (power/weight makes more sense really) we have mentioned this before that power/weight seems a fairer way of dividing the classes and its how most others manage it

Been following this event for a while and know I have a race license and will be starting my first season in my turbo exocet kit car I am planning a build for this event.
I've been donated a mx5 by a friend who I'm helping remove all the good parts (full carbon fibre panel car) members in the mx5 community will know the owner and the remains the shell and running gear will be used as the base of the car.
A few questions on setting the team up for the event. First its a 1.8 mk1 I'm planning on going turbo with it this will put me in invitational class or class e?

2nd full cost of the event obviously the entry fees but generally what is the average cost of the event with fuel/tyres etc.

3rd insurance as there will be other drivers mainly people I know what is required with that, also on other drivers what's the typical cost for a drive in the event.

Just trying too build up an idea of cost for the event so I can get required funds together. Hopefully will be able too join and experience this great event.
A turbo Exocet would put you in the invitational class I would expect, you certainly wont end up in the 1.8 class as isn't really a 1.8 class but one designed for the Mazdas in standard (ish) trim, such as the Max5 guys etc, the 2.0 class is also for the Mazdas such as the Supercup guys. You might end up in the 2.0 class, two such teams spring to mind from the 2017 race, the MK1 MX5 with the MK2.5 engine in and the Mini Cooper S. However they look at reference lap times and if they decide you are too fast for your class they will move you up and sandbagging is frowned upon. Its actually a problem and one that could be fixed if the event moved to BHP/Per Ton system which would free us up (we have to run to Compact Cup regs) to be more competitive and others too (see the MK1 and Mini)

In terms of costs, almost impossible to predict what yours will be until you actually have a car built and that you have run for a period of time to work out what it would cost to run for a 12 hour race. Factor in Fuel, Tyres, Brakes as a minimum then add the cost of getting there and back, add in feeding yourself for 3 days then times that by your number of drivers and crew, the add in a budget for unknowns and you'll get a rough figure. Pretty sure there are a couple of guys on here who ran arrive and drive seats last year they might be able to give you a better idea of costs!

It's a great weekend though and really moving during speeches etc. This will be our third this year and its an excellent way to sign the season off as Championships elsewhere are done everyone is a little more relaxed behind the wheel which makes for a more pleasant race. Supercar Saturday is a laugh as well especially when the event organiser who shall remain nameless (Merrick) takes the Safety Car out for passenger laps and destroys the tyres showboating smile
