As the Title: New Average speed cameras are being rolled out on the A217 Northbound from Reigate Roundabout to Sutton, Also Speed Limits in sections have been reduced!

It used to be from Reigate Roundabout to Lower Kingswood the Dual carriageway was National Speed limit. this has now been reduced to 40MPH The New Average cameras are bolted one on top of each other covering both lanes to existing Lamp posts!
The first one is as you go around the left corner after Reigate roundabout, slightly hidden from view by the tree canopy. The second camera is just after the Lower Kingswood roundabout by the Mogador turning and so it continues all the way past Tadworth roundabout, Burgh Heath, past Romans International to Sutton.

Getting more and more like "1984" each day frown

Thanks for the input chaps, I had only spotted this going Northbound, I had no idea they were doing it southbound too cry

I think this is all to do with a bigger picture of ANPR, then checking insurance/ MOT etc... against registrations.

I Have not heard anything from anyone.
who monitors these? is it Reigate and Banstead council, Surrey County council, the Police or a private company?

And the A217 was not always "40mph for years" It used to be that from Banstead crossroads up to Tadworth Roundabout was 40mph, then it went to National speed limit until the roundabout before Lower Kingswood, back to 40mph through Lower Kingswood, then National speed limit from Mogador to Reigate hill M25.

The first stretch to be reduced to 40mph was between Tadworth roundabout and Lower Kingswood. that was around 2 years ago, now recently the stretch from Mogador to Reigate hill has also been reduced to 40mph. And now the Speed cameras have been put in place.

I get speed limits, fine in rush hour school times, but in the early hours of the morning when shift workers want nothing more than to get home,
Being stuck there at 40mph on a totally empty dual carriageway is nuts.

What the hell is wrong with driving to road conditions? Fine doing 40 through Lower Kingswood and the burgh heath Banstead section, but having a dual carriageway reduced to 40mph in the aforementioned areas is madness to me.

How do these scameras work anyway? What happens if you exit the road before reaching the next scamera?

I noticed a few days ago that the So called Mad Mile (even though its not a mile) section has been reduced to 60 mph!

I also like the fact that, that form lists the names of who was for reductions and who who was not!

Remember who to vote for at Local elections wink

I noted the bit where it mentioned that the Police did not like the idea of different speed limits on different sections wink

What is currently a joke is the dual carriageway down to one lane due to roadworks, then even though the roadworks are barriered off they have put up a temporary speed limit of 20mph!

So you can drive by Motorway roadworks at 50mph but here they have reduced a 40mph Dual carriageway to 20mph!
A major arterial road to South London!
Joke Pathetic.

So Sorry everyone, if you're stuck behind me while I do exactly 20mph Blame the Council nimbys.

A point i made earlier. Is there any point in a 400bhp monster that can break the speed limit in 6 seconds. More to the point, why do the authorities allow them to be sold in the uk if they are determined to press ahead with a totalitarian regime. Better off buying an old citroen 2cv and go full chat at 70mph. Much more fun!!! Oh forgot- that should be crushed as the tree huggers think they ruin the air.
Because we are part of Europe smile Ferrari and Lamborghini sell cars to us as well as the Gulf states. Some roads in Germany do not have a speed limit.
Its only over here where nimbys keep lobbying the local authorities to reduce limits.
Look at many inner roads in London, speed ramps everywhere, limits down to 20mph in many, many roads.
We are going backwards as a motoring nation and the road infrastructure is clogged frown
If that london mayor has his way the next thing you will see is people walking in front of a car with a red flag! And sadly the media and councils blindly follow the same ideas.
Nowhere have I seen a lobbying group against this so called reducing of speed!

Well, perhaps I agree with posters various, but how the hell this is called a scam is beyond me!
Really? its the fact that this is yet another form of revenue from motorists, Just like congestion charge and all the other ways they get you.
These people sit around desks and work out schemes on how to raise revenue. It seems to me these people can do what they like when it comes to roads and there is not one group who stand up against it!

So, does anybody know if the Average Speed cameras have been set to register vehicles travelling over 20mph for that part of the roadworks or are they still set at 40mph?

I noticed this morning coming in that just in front of the flashing 20mph sign there is a new sign saying 'CCTV in Operation' which is making me fear the worst - I have been going through that part at a sensible 30mph as 20mph is just ridiculously slow, and causes no end of stress with people driving up your backside and flashing etc.

I wouldn't mind if the guys were working but at the time I go through (just after 6am) there is not a roadworker to be seen!
I honestly don't know? I too have been driving through part of it coming out of tattenham way and driving up to Romans to turn right into Garratts Lane, I have been deliberately driving at a blistering 19 miles an hour, frustration from other drivers is evident, with many drivers undertaking me, even the Old ladies (who never speed) rolleyes

It really is a bloody joke!

Stick to 19MPH
It will cause so much chaos with tail backs to the M25 that the authorities might actually take notice. It will be broadcast on local radio the traffic chaos, the AA and RAC will get calls and the Police "might" act to lift restrictions.

Better still, get your passenger to get out of the car and walk in front of it with a Red Flag!

For what its worth, I contacted the Council this morning and asked for clarification on what sped I am supposed to be doing,
they are going to look into it and tell me! So it seems even they are not sure at the moment! I also asked about the speed cameras, again the lady in the office could not tell me if they are operating yet rage

Give them a call 03002001003

Here's the Brilliant and helpful email I got from Surrey County council today banghead

"Reference number: ME-422318
Location: BRIGHTON ROAD, BANSTEAD
Details: Streetworks - Street Works enquiry

The current speed limit on the A217 is 40mph and will remain 40mph once the new speed cameras come into effect which is anticipated to be about the end of November.

There are currently reduced limits in effect at the location of the works currently taking place on the highway, once these works have been completed, the speed limit will revert to 40mph.

Once again thank you for contacting us. If you have any further queries or require additional information you may find the following page on our website useful: www.surreycc.gov.uk/highwaysinfo
