Scho's Porsche 996 C4S
Discussion
It’s been a good while since I’ve had something interesting! Mainy be spending all available funds on babies and kart racing. Both expensive hobbies. Ha.
Broke my wrist on the mountain bike over xmas. Doc prescribed no bikes or Karting for 6 months. With so much time on my hands I seem to have de-generated into my former self end ended up buying a daft car again.
This was sourced through a mate of mine at Hartech. It’s been Barry’s personal car for a while but the lads tell me he’s too old to get in and out of ‘em these days! (hope he doesn’t read this).
It’s not perfect cosmetically, The body is rust free but the paint is pretty well swirled, Something I plan on sorting. More importantly mechanically it’s absolutely spot on. The car has 80K on but feels really nice and tight to me having had a load of work done in Barry’s ownership including a full engine rebuild still under warranty.
I’m using it daily and loving it. I’ve even got a child seat in the back and a pram in the front so I can take the nipper out when mrs Scho is at work.
Happy days.
Took a few snaps last night:

The strange thing about the interior is when i originally saw an image of it I hated it.
When I actually saw it in the flesh I liked it but thought I'd have to make some changes to tone it down.
Now I actually love it...Even the pink carpets.
Its a grower, Infinitely preferable to black IMO. http://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-marketplace/644...
I like the contrast against the black paint and it defiantly makes the 996 interior feel a bit more special. They can look a bit boring. You can call terracotta many things but boring is not one of them, Ha.

Nice.
Normal 996's are a bit meh but the C4S is very much more than meh - something soulful about it.
How quick does it feel and hoes the handling?

I'd prefer 2WD but can't get into the slim 996 looks wise. Was hanging on for a 997 but I couldn't get this bad boy out of my head. Caved in and bought it.
The handling is ridiculous. So nice and firm with the lowered turbo suspension without being crashy. The grip levels are insane. I'm really struggling to unstick it at sensible speeds. You have to be a total hooligan which I'm not sure I'm ready to be on public roads. Heading to Oulton in August to their low traction drift circuit to try and work it out. With the traction control on I get the feeling you could throw it in at any speed and she'd lap it up.
My last proper car was the E39 M5. Point to point this feels way quicker but the delivery is totally different. The E39 could break traction even at lowish revs and I could drive to work without going over 1K RPM it had that much torque. This thing really needs winding up, With the stainless system Im happy to oblige, Very frequently.
I'll get a vid

One of the best rear ends Porsche have ever done! I've always had a soft spot these. Perfectly proportioned and aggressive whilst not being OTT. Much prefer the looks of these to the Turbo.
I think that interior is great. Black and grey are so conservative, which was the fashion at the time. Also there's something about the louder Porsche interiors that when they're photographed they look unbelievably bright and in your face, yet when viewed in the flesh they are actually quite nice. Mind you that's coming from someone who doesn't mind Savannah, so what do I know.
Enjoy the car, it's a corker!
My mate from Hartech was trying to talk me into a turbo on Saturday night. The performance appeals but I think this one looks better. The wing and side intakes do nothing for me on the turbo. That looks utterly fabulous - I spent most of this afternoon perusing 996 ads on Autotrader and PH with a view to chopping in my Alfa daily hack for something special, and looking at the quality of your car it certainly does not look its age or mileage - well bought!
That red interior would do me just fine, I don't mind black at all but the contrast makes a world of difference. There are a few silver 996s for sale with red interiors which is encouraging.

These make excellent dailies... as long as you don't need to kart much around with you.
To be honest she does scrub up well, the paint needs a good machine polish, the wheels could do with a full refurb and there are a couple of small dents to sort. Ths thing to be aware of is the interior plastics seem to be prone to scratching. Some of it is painted in this rubbery coating which is very easily marked. Mine has had some bits re-painted. Doesn't look too bad but you can tell it's not OEM. Worth bearing in mind if you see a sound car don't be put off by this. Seems quite common.

Boxster Red interior is fantastic, makes the interior look more modern and really goes well with black or grey exterior
I think pictures make it look more overwhelming than it really is.
Agree, Colour is not accurate in pics, I applied some tarty filter in PS. I think pictures make it look more overwhelming than it really is.
In any case if does look great in the metal.
I actually think it's got a bit of a retro vibe to it. Throwback to the mental Porsche interiors of yesterday.

So how was the handling day? I like my cars to slide at sane speeds and am thinking of getting a 996 next..
Si, embarrassed to say in missed the session :-( Basically I have some bad news for you. This thing does not let go until you are going very very quickly. When it is sliding and you apply more throttle to hold the angle it tends to snap back in and tank slap a bit. A bit disconcerting! I may just be being a donkey but given up trying really and decided to enjoy what it's really really good at which is providing ridiculous mechanical grip. Travelled to work with a friend on Saturday morning along some deserted and very greasy roads. His M3 was a left for dead without really trying.
I'm partial to a cheeky bit of oversteer myself but if you are used to the way BMW's do it I think you'd be disappointed.
Obviously I can only comment on the c4. I've seen a chap get massively sideways in a c2 so I'd look in that direction if slidey slidey is a must.
Got some new luggage for work, Managed to fit all this in the froot.

That looks ace. Agree with thoughts that the C4S is the pick of the 996 bunch......that ass!
Here's my old motor. Not the same colour, but almost baby version of that interior (terracotta)
Thats looks really tidy! Here's my old motor. Not the same colour, but almost baby version of that interior (terracotta)
I love the pink carpets in these terracotta interiors. Should't work but it does, In my opinion of course
I've had the car for a year now. I've put 10k miles on it and it's been an absolute pleasure!
The car had a load of work done by hartech before I bought it but a few things needed addressing;
-Geo was out and caused the inner edge of both rear tyres to wear out.
-Shifting was a bit woolly at times.
-Rear coffin arm bushes squeaking.
-Air con condensors shot. No AC.
-Clutch feeling a bit worn, suspected duel mass flywheel worn. Tricky to shift smoothly in low gears.
It's been an expensive month!
The car has had;
New condensors fitted and re gas
2 x PS2 rear tyres
New rear coffin arms
New clutch
New dual mass flywheel
New shifter cables
Service and geometry set up at hartech.
I don't really want to add all that up but I know there won't be much change from 3k. It's been money well spent, the car is so much easier to drive with the new clutch and fly wheel and the gear change is so much better it's like a different car.
As expected the alignment is spot on, drives wonderfully, a lot more settled and the rear seems to be a lot more planted in particular.
Yes my wallet hurts but it's worth it to know the car is mechanically 100%.
Few cosmetic bits next on the list!
