Hi all, long time lurker, and have been very impressed with everyones builds. It’s been a very long time since I owned a car that was ‘thread worthy’, and even then I never managed to do one properly.

A bit of background: I moved to the States back in April ’15 having been through a spousal visa application (green card), which was a very long, arduous process. It took just over a year; a year in which I couldn’t buy, sell, or do anything interesting automotively, due to the fact that I’d be leaving “any day now”. Needless to say it took longer than we thought. The problem being a petrolhead, is there’s always something exotic or interesting that you want to buy, but common sense dictates you buy something that will sell easily when in my predicament. So I spent a year with a B6 Audi A4 TDi, the 90bhp version. It wasn’t fun, or interesting, especially given my background in Mk2 Golf GTi’s, Polo GT’s, Corrados, Cupra’s, etc etc. Also note: the Audi was neither easy to sell, nor ‘cheap’, as previously intended.

Anyway, the visa was finally granted in April, and within 10 days, I was finally stateside (San Francisco), to start a new life.

Having gotten myself a job, bank accounts, bits and bobs; all of which are more difficult than anticipated in a new country, I could finally move on and look for a new car.

I’ve wanted an E36 M3 for at least 5-6 years, having been in a Techno Violet M3 converted Touring many moons ago. The thing was beautiful and I fell in love instantly. Another ride in a different one a few years later confirmed the love affair.

Now to buy.

As you may know, the US version of the E36 M3 is basically a slightly jumped up 328i Sport, not the same beast it is in Europe. It also comes with lesser quality things like plastic headlights. Nevertheless, I must have one, and according to my wife and her family traditions, it must be red… “Fair enough”, I say.

I ended up buying one in October. It’s a leggy one. 192k, but runs nicely. This car is for fun, I don’t need it to commute and it’ll be what I make of it, so high mileage is what it is. It’s the “Lux” model, which means wood trim (mmmm), lots of leather (mmmmMMMmmm) and no Vader seats (boo), electric (torn) leather instead. It is thankfully a manual.

I bought it for $<not_enough> with the idea I’d fix a few things.

It’s got pretty damn good paintwork, I must say! We don’t suffer from rust in California; one less thing to worry about. But it has got a few years worth of parking permits which have ‘welded’ themselves to the back bumper, some lacquer peeling on the wing mirrors, and some hazing on the headlights, the interior is also pretty tatty, the headlining is falling down, and the cruise control doesn’t work. But hey, it’s bright red and it’s an M3. My own M3!

“I hate that damn sticker”

At this point, it had the following:
- Full fluids change (engine, gearbox, diff, coolant, brake fluid)
- Front discs (rotors….) and pads (ummm…..pads)
- AC + Serpentine belt
- Some other investigation work

Then it went on some drives around the Bay Area. I was lead to believe all American roads were arrow straight, but there’s some serious roads around here. Alice’s restaurant is a good spot, with some incredible roads winding out to it.

More to come...

I also undertook some minor maintenance myself. I live in an apartment in downtown San Francisco, with valet parking, which isn’t good for working on cars. So all the maintenance is done in my works car park. Not ideal, but it’s all good fun!

I should also note, I’m a total amateur.

Firstly, I am not, nor have ever been affiliated with Oregon State University, so this went:

My drivers vent wouldn’t direct air properly, so that was swiftly replaced:

I replaced the wood gear knob, which was broken and would fly off on particularly spirited gear changes, for a ZHP gear knob, nicely weighted; great upgrade. I quite like the wood trim, but unfortunately, it’s a bit of a state, and crazy expensive to replace.

So it came out…

Then it went back in (minus the wood) because I’d bought the wrong part…

While I had all the trim out, I changed the cabin filter. What a pig of a job! Glad I did it though…

My OBC was not lighting up correctly, especially the time, which couldn’t be seen at all.

A simple change of bulbs (I’ve never been so excited to receive bulbs in the post!)…

I also changed the bulb in the headlight switch, so now I have a full set of working dash lights

Tidied the… “trunk”… with a snap-on trunk tidy.

The little things eh?

New wipers

Gave the interior a damn good clean, old plasters were a particularly nice find:

I then took some pics:

Went to a car show. This nice chap informed me my passenger side wheels were the wrong way round. Obvious now I look, not at the time…

Then got the replacement centre console, installed it, swapped the wheels round and took more pictures.

That’s about it for maintenance currently.
Current plans:
- Bushings refresh - there seems to be some movement around the drivetrain. So hopefully that might help
- Flex plate (guibo?)
- Gear shifter refresh
- Headlining needs recovering
- Remove sticker/repaint rear bumper
- Alignment
- Perhaps some uprated suspension components at some point
- Steering wheel replace/recover
- Replace front wheel arch linings due to rubbing.
- Handbrake cable adjustment.
- Seats are ripped, replace with Vaders/better condition sport seats/E46 seats/other.
- Whatever else a ~190k M3 throws up at me smile

..aaaaaand more to come!

Over Thanksgiving weekend we took a trip down the coast to Monterey. My wife wanted to visit the aquarium, and I look for any excuse to drive my car.

Thanks folks.

There does seem to be a few diesels out here. I'm not sure how many more will come to California though after 'VW Diesel-gate', they've been rendered effectively worthless here, because California has strict smog testing every 2 years.

Which leads me on to "he's going to put a proper m3 engine in it..". It's something that has crossed my mind. I drove a few E46's, and that S54 is unreal. The way it winds out is something else. But currently the smog laws of California are confusing me; they are extremely strict when it comes to engine conversions. Plus, as stated, I live in an apartment, and although it's a dream of mine to replace an engine, alas that day is not here yet.

Regarding the (current) S52 in there, this is from a fellow US owner on another forum, and I have to agree with the short gearing:

Although it doesn't have the same lovely euro motor, the advantage is the low maintenance and reliability the US S50/S52 offers... 200k miles is fine on these motors, just broken in Also, the gearing means they're not far off the acceleration times of the euro counterpart.

EDIT: I have a headlight restoration kit awaiting.

...oh, and watch this space for the steering wheel whistle

BTW - regarding US restrictions, you are fine as long as you keep stock emissions hardware in place.

Afternoon all!

When I got the car, the headlining was sagging and falling down. Having previously owned a Mk2 Golf GTi with the same affliction, I know only too well how difficult a job that is to do right. It still remains the worst job, in terms of quality of outcome and sheer effort, that I’ve ever done on any car I’ve owned. So I wasn’t about to attempt it again.

So, off it went to have this:

Turned into this:

A brilliant job was done of it by the local trimmers, they also did the sunroof panel and sunroof switch panel which was previously rattling; another benefit of doing the job! It’s got a lovely cushioning to it, and really makes a huge difference. Very happy!

More pics after a wash:

That was done at the beginning of December. Since then I’ve really just cleaned and driven the car.

It was my birthday just after xmas, so I treated myself to a drive. No excuses needed:

This weekend has been another step forward. The inner wheel arches have been rubbing since I bought the car, the culprit being a snapped mounting section, weirdly the same on both sides. Anyway, I enlisted the help of a workmate of mine, who had a garage, and we set about changing them out for fresh BMW supplied items!

Old off

New on

While I was at BMW, I also picked up a spare key, since I only had one.

More progress soon! A new steering wheel has been bought…

I also have a proper camera on the way, so hopefully the picture quality should improve.

Thanks, yeah I'm glad that's over for the time being.

I've done SF to Monterey and back, but not any further yet. I'm keen to go further at some point, but I'm currently in those first few months of car ownership where I'm trying to gauge reliability (among other things).

So far, I can report only good things! biggrin

Hi folks. No huge updates since last time. The steering wheel still hasn’t been changed.

But my cruise control has miraculously started to work, which means one of two things; disconnecting the battery reset the computer (classic “switch it off and on again”), or, and this is more likely, I was using it wrong. Either way, my first car to have cruise, in a ’96 of all things! A very valuable thing to have in this land.

I had the tracking done, the handbrake adjusted from ~7 clicks to 4 (San Francisco hill starts just got slightly easier) and the shifter bushings changed, which has helped the slightly sloppy change, but not completely, it works ok for now though, I need to start enjoying the car without ploughing quite so much of my hard-earned into it.

My nice new camera turned up, so I thought I’d clean the car and take some pictures, I’m well and truly a serial hobbyist, and amateur photography is a very new one, so I have a lot to learn. The camera does show up the state of the seats though. There’s still a few things to sort on this car.

I’ve also made the switch to Flickr. So far, the quality is leaps and bounds above Photobucket.

Keep a look out for the idiot who didn’t realise there were mirrors in the car when photographing wink

Are there gains to be had from an s50 head on an s52? I've never heard of that.

I am limited by emissions, the smog check is pretty rigorous, so I heard.

I'm more limited by space/resources as far as engine swaps are concerned though.

Thanks for the comments smile

Update time! Well, more of a picture dump… but we all like pics, so…

I attended an, initially foggy, turning lovely later on, cars and coffee on Treasure Island. Snapped a couple of pics of mine, and loads of others. Some serious metal (highlights being RWB Porsche and Carrera GT IMO) can be seen here:

I’ve had a bit of a rocky month with the car, engine lights and fixes, which put me off the car a little. Having considered selling up for an E46, a few drives in the evening sunshine this week have well and truly got me smitten again. This car is awesome!

Another update coming shortly, I went for a drive yesterday and took some pictures…

Well, the internet tells me that your S52 motor is a hybrid S50 bottom end with the M50 head, but perhaps its just easier to throw in a complete S50 motor, if they're available out there?

Worth pursuing options. I can tell you that a fresh E36 M3 is a wondrous thing. Never had the chance to drive a US spec one though. What's the power output?
Ok, sounds interesting, thanks. It's around 240bhp, but the torque seems endless, I think that's the redeeming feature of the US spec model. I'm told they're also more reliable, which is kind of a ridiculous statement for any 20 year old car, I guess time will tell.

I'd guess your power is lost and reliability is gained in the single Vanos head over the double vanos of the S50.
Is yours a 3.0 or 3.2?
With your 'euro connections' you could probably bag some headlights cheap. Do you get vadars out in the states?

I'll have another one, one day!
Mines the 3.2, so the later OBDII version.

We did get vaders, yes. The standard M3 did come with them, but mine is the 'lux' model, which means different (to the regular M3):
- sport seats
- padded leather door cards
- wood trim
- different front grille (painted)
- I think different side skirts

I'm considering vaders and keeping the padded door cards, I think it'll look lovely then! I heard they're not that comfy for the 'larger frame' though?

About time for an update? I’ve mainly just been driving the thing. Getting out and enjoying these Bay Area roads as often as I can. As well as working on the photography side. Hopefully you enjoy the pics. Any feedback would be very welcome.

I went to Cars and coffee SF again recently. However, this time I was joined by my friend who owns a Tesla. Some of the reactions to an EV at a car show were pretty funny, even here in SF! But the best part of the day was the drive after, introducing him to my favourite spots.

Some shots of the show: https://flic.kr/s/aHskyjuxqa

Otherwise, some parked up at Alices. A place I seem to frequent most weeks. The roads are astonishing.

Shame about the gas truck in the background, but hey ho, maybe next time.

I’ve also made an effort to attend my first BMWCCA (Car Club of America) event; the East Bay Cars & Coffee. Great bunch of like-minded folks with some very pretty cars. Two highlights; a new M3 Individual which was very very nice.

…and my personal fav. Something I’ve been very excited to sit in (as my expression would suggest):

One of mine at the event:

Which brings me on to todays activities. Those headlights. They are the biggest let down on the front end (followed closely by the dent in the nose panel, and that front plate, which although blanked for internet, I can assure you it’s awful). One of the very first things I bought for this car was a Meguires headlight restoration kit; a kit that, after today, I would very much recommend.

Here’s how they started today:

I hope you agree, it looks transformed! 10 years younger! Which is good since it turns 20 this year. I thought, since the headlights cleaned up so well, the rest had better get a quick going-over too. Then more pics, cos, well, everyone love them.

Evening all, it’s been a tough couple of months for the M3.

It all started with a knocking developing at the back. I couldn’t work out where this was coming from, and in my efforts to diagnose, stumbled upon this:

The eagle-eyed of you may notice the cracking; the strut towers are a pretty well documented as being a weak point on the E36. I took the car to a local BMW specialist for a full checkover. They stated that the possible cause of the knock was the rear top mounts, and also came back with a raft of other issues, mostly stuff that can be taken care of at my leisure, but a couple of things that required fairly swift action. The exhaust hangers needed replacing, and the clutch hose was ’seeping’.

Both were changed and the car was booked in somewhere different for the welding.

Memorial day weekend, and a few days before the welding was due to be done (an hours drive away), I went to reverse out of a parking space, and the clutch dropped to the floor. Having had the flex host changed just a few days before, I was certain that the fix was inadequate, and that the garage would fix this. Turns out that the additional pressure from a functioning flex hose had caused a failure in the clutch master cylinder. So the car was recovered (at my cost) to the garage who proceeded to change the aforementioned master cylinder, as well as the slave.

The next day, the strut tower crack was welded and both were reinforced at a local metal fabricators - TC Design. They came highly recommended, and they did a fantastic job. I got them to change the top mounts too as they were the main suspect of the rear-end-knock. They were changed for E46 M3 items, and the knock was subsequently fixed.

Strut Tower reinforcement by TheDukeGTi, on Flickr

So all this has been a bit of a downer on the car. I’ve considered selling up, but frankly there’s really nothing much else that I want within my reach. It does drive very well now too. The clutch has a great feel, and there are zero rattles, which has to be rare for an E36.

I decided to do a couple of other little things to cheer me up.

Firstly, the drivers seat was getting progressively worse on the bolster, there is also a tear across the width of the base, on both the front seats, presumably due to the leather hardening, which will require some more care, but for now the bolster can be prettied up a little. I bought a leather(-like) patch from Amazon that I was hoping would at least tidy the area up a little, it was past repair anyway.
Before:

After:

Not bad!

I also decided to pull the trigger on a Clarion FZ102E. Having researched for hours trying to find a semi-oem-looking solution that (at least) had USB playback, I settled on this. It’d been sat in my eBay watch list for a couple of months, and was delivered from London. The previous headunit, was good, but I couldn’t see the damn thing in the sun and I don’t like the flashy lights. So it had to go.

Anyway, it’s pretty basic, and the operation of it is clunky, but it looks good, which is kind of what matters to me. It also sounds respectable too:

I also wanted to try a front plate delete. Not something I’m running daily, but perhaps for shows.

BMW front plate delete by TheDukeGTi, on Flickr

Finally, I found this cool little product while browsing around. Turns out that the boot/trunk latch can crack on these, especially spoiler-less boots. This re-enforces the latch. As you can see, mine was pretty good to start with, but I installed it anyway.

So, that’s it for now. Just picked it up from an oil change service yesterday. Got a few more things I want to do soon. But it’s re-enforced now.

Hey folks! Another quick update on the M3 progress.

A couple of months ago, I was invited for a driving weekend away with a friend of mine and his buddies; a trip they do every year and have named “car guy cruise”. Incredible weekend of driving sparsely populated roads that carve through the Northern California mountains. Some of the best driving I’ve ever experienced. The cars I accompanied were also cool, top of my list is my friends 300ZX twin turbo; the sound!

Anyway, having just ticked over 200k; ~4x the mileage of the other machinery and a broken fuel gauge (later fixed with some fuel cleaner), the M3 really held it’s own, and shone on those twisty mountain roads. Enough wittering, pictures. You can see the whole album here, should you so please: https://flic.kr/s/aHskLhZ2Dq

So I’ve generally been enjoying the car. I’ve had my ups and downs. Thoughts of selling, then keeping; changing by the day. I took it to a dent clinic run by BMWCCA last weekend in the hope of fixing the dent in the nose panel. Having taken grilles and headlights out, surrounded by fellow members, he didn’t manage to fix it. Fix one thing, find two more. But I genuinely find myself growing more and more attached to the thing. It’s plenty fast for anything I need it for. It’s raw and exciting enough, more-so than an E46, which honestly I’d love to own, but have also heard are way more expensive than the E36, especially the US variant.

So in the spirit of all this, I decided to to pull my finger out and finally change that steering wheel. A pic of ‘before’ for your viewing pleasure:
DSC_0247 by TheDukeGTi, on Flickr

Ripped. Ugly.

I used the following guide to change: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=33...
Pretty involved process. Remove wheel, remove trim pieces, remove switch bracket, swap switch bracket, splice horn wire, replace everything. So happy with the result though. Smaller wheel, sportier, nice BMW emblem, and in amazing condition! Much more fitting for the supposed top spec 3 series. Drives soooooo nice with it.

Hi all! Just a little progress update with the M3. Truth be told, there hasn’t been any work done on the car, but I’ve enjoyed using it a lot, and I’ve taken a few photos these past couple of months, and everyone likes pics!

It was my birthday over the holiday period, so I decided to treat myself. A visit to wine country motorsports at Sonoma raceway helped me pull the trigger on a helmet, since I really want to do some autoX or track days soon, I figured this would push thing along.

I’ll make sure to take the stickers off smile

Ever since I changed the steering wheel, I had the airbag light on. I had a little mishap when installing the wheel which meant I had to drive a short distance without the airbag. So I knew there wasn’t an issue. I just had to reset the light. Sure enough, a $20 eBay win later, I had this:

Worked a charm, no airbag lights!
A couple of days later, I decided to take a few days to drive all the way to LA, down the PCH. No pictures, as the weather was terrible. But this was the final mileage at the end of the 3 days:
BMW M3 96 by TheDukeGTi, on Flickr

Car performed faultlessly, burned no oil, no hairy moments; smooth all the way there and back!
Another week passed, and my wife and I decided to drive the coast again. Another load of driving, but good weather and pics this time (and another final mileage pic).
Car was obviously filthy after all this, and those swirl marks are standing out a lot. I’ll need to think about sorting that soon. Anyway…
