Ultimate Street Sleeper - Mercedes W124 'Superturbodiesel'
Discussion
Im a bit dubious of posting this. But i think all petrolheads will be able to appreciate the appeal of this.
The car is a white 1989 W124 E250 D.
It has an OM606 3.0 engine (from a W210 E Class)
6 speed box from a W211 E270 cdi
Sachs racing clutch and custom flywheel
7.5 manual superstroker injection pump from dieselmeken
Borgwarner S300 turbo running 3 bar
3 inch turbo back stainless exhaust
Big radiator and intercooler from an E300 W124
A few pics:
So this car appears 100% bone stock from the outside. Unless you twig the exhaust of course.
Under the bonnet is a bit more revealing..
It is worth mentioning that this engine is bone stock. Unopened. Its been running this power for a year, uses no oil, and has lost no compression. Pretty amazing really!
The car made 562hp and 587 ft lb. That is wheel figures from a hub dyno. Crank figure was 680bhp. It has an 8,000rpm redline, but feels best when changing at around 6 to 6.5.
And yes, it will still do 37mpg if you stay off boost.

Wow! Didnt expect this response!
To answer a few questions - it is indeed dieselpumpuk build no. 2. I now own the vehicle.
How does it run 8k rpm? A mechanical injection pump. It is not a common rail diesel.
Traction? In the dry, not an issue. Even with an open diff she opens up and goes no problem. It needs a quaife for longer gearing though, 1st, 2nd, 3rd cant really access the potential. 4th a bit better. 5th and 6th are batst crazy! Like i cant actually explain how much it forces you back in the seat.
Smoke? Yes its a performance diesel. It has an alda ontop of the pump so it brings the fuelling in gradually with the boost, but there is still a fair amount thrown out at hard boost.
Suspension / brakes. Currently standard, although new discs / pads, balljoints, bushes, wishbones etc. Will deffo be upgrading, i have been told the lift from the front when the boost kicks in is quite substantial.

OK lets clarify a few things.
Smoke - that clears up on full boost, its just as the boost comes in it smokes.
Power - It is a genuine 562whp. If you dont believe it feel free, it doesnt bother me.
Revs - It has an 8k rpm limit on the pump, its nothing to do with me reading the rev counter, thats what it was set to it on the test bench, and thats what it does. Im not saying i use it every gear change. As ive said it feels fastest going to 6-6.5k.
Remeber this is NOT a common rail, it is an indirect injection diesel running off a manual injection pump. There are no electrics / ecu involved.

Lets take a break from discussing what is, or isnt possible. The car is what it is, and what it is one hell of a fun drive.
Went to the garage this afternoon to inspect noises...
The prop ate the doughnut. The front doughnut is massive and looks fine, the rear one is half the size and has been eaten.
The quaife set up also comes with a larger one.
Been driving it all day, cant stop smiling ??

I was aware when i bought the car the diff / prop was the only bit left stock that might struggle.
Its a fairly new part, so looking at solid mounting it might be an option. Or, i could splash out on the diff setup....
Yes they do a quick spool turbo set up as well that gives 400odd whp and better spool. But with this, i havent found it slow even when driving. Yes ok in 6th at 50/60mph you have a lot of lag to get upto 80... but driving round town the turbo is always working. It feels like the car has easy access to small boost, then when you plant the throttle the rest of the 3 bar come in.

Time for a major update!
The car shot a rod. A combination of the power and revs. Fortunately engines are cheaper than trying to replace parts so it has a fresh engine, a new rev limit of 5,800 rpm and less fuel / boost. This is a nice set up for now and I think it will stay that way for a while. Only thing it may need is a new manifold for the turbo to spool earlier.
Made a new vid of the set up. It is still fairly quick!
