Along with my Astra sleeper (see thread here - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... I also have my other motor - a UK spec 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR. I bought it in October and things went downhill very quickly...

Some pics from the previous owner -

The day I picked it up...

So... Day 2 of Evo ownership and I'm fitting a new bonnet cable as the original snapped when I went round to see the car. Whilst the wheel is off and the arch liner is out I take a look at the front ARB bushes, droplinks etc just for wear and tear - doesn't have one fitted at all?!

Day 3 of Evo ownership - spotted my front right OZ is cracked. Brilliant!

Day 4 of Evo ownership (this is where it gets really good!) - on my way over to Warwick to watch my friends playing football, after slowing down into the town from a short blast down some of my favourite roads I notice a tapping noise coming from the engine! Fearing the worst I pulled over and check it out a bit more - didn't sound great so I nursed it home for more diagnosis the following day.

Day 5 - Compression test, borescope, pulling sensors and other bits and bobs just to try and cling on to some hope it wouldn't be terminal, but to no avail. I decided it was probably a damaged piston or a rattle coming from the bottom end on cylinder 4... Gutted!

So I decided to get the car up to MG Autos in Ripley for a proper diagnosis. They found a few other issues (all four wheels are buckled to name one) and they got the engine out and stripped to find that it has had a reground crank put in it in the past. The noise looked to be coming from the shells which almost seemed loose in the rods, and had plenty of wear on them!

So 5 days and about 250 miles into Evo ownership and I'm staring down the barrell of a full engine rebuild But hey ho, such is life! The car is currently with MG and I've gone on Mat's recommendations for a full forged engine build using CP pistons, Oliver rods, new crank, JUN cams and a load of other jazzy bits! I'm not keen for chasing crazy figures so despite the engine potentially being capable of a lot lot more, it'll only be running at the limits of what an Evo IX 80 series turbo can produce... Hopefully around 480hp. More than enough for the time being I'm sure!

Some pics of the engine build to follow!

If you ever need to sell it (seriously) I can make room for that in my garage. (As Long as its not within the next 12M).

Always promised myself a real old-School 4WD Jap Rocket, my favourite Evo and colour too.

Will have to forgo a classic as I can only really have three cars but this'll compensate when I don't want to take my other toy.

At least you know it's be done properly now.
I'll bear that in mind pal, I doubt I'll be selling it any time soon though!

What an awesome looking car, such a shame that it lasted 5 days before needing a full strip and rebuild! Did you contact the previous owner at all or just accept it?

I am literally just down the road from MG Autos, are you local to Ripley or were you just recommended them as they are well known Evo specialist?
I did as there was so many issues, he seemed a really friendly and genuine guy, and claimed he had no knowledge of the issues which in some ways I believe - I've since found out the "specialist" he used has ceased trading and their rep on MLR is very tainted! So I think they've pulled a bit of a fast one on him, he then had a kid and put something like 800 miles on the car in 3 years so probably never realised, and has unknowingly passed the issues onto me. I'm not local to Ripley no, I'm from near Warwick. I went with MG due to their rep on MLR and seeing some previous builds of theirs.

stty luck OP, basically buying the car twice I'd guess with the rebuild cost.

Looks a nice car all the same.
Pretty much bang on lol eek

These still look very nice.

Shame about your misfortune OP but I bet it's a sweet sweet thing after the rebuild.

I've never been in an evo. What's the lag like?
Mine was running 380hp @ 1.6bar before on the stock 80 series Evo IX turbo and it didn't feel laggy at all to be honest. A friend had a 570hp GT30 powered 5 and that was an absolute rocket but pretty laggy! I'm hoping mine should be pretty swift at pulling full boost due to the head work and the JUN cams it now has. I'm told it should pull about 470-480 at around 1.8/1.9bar so barely more than it was running before!

Had a few Evos now and yearning after another one so constantly on the lancer register.

I'd have been tempted to keep it original, the body looks in great shape and they'll become more desirable as time goes on.
Get one, they are fabulous. I've spent a lot of time around them before buying mine (Girlfriends brother has a IX and IV!) and they really are awesome! I've got the standard wheels freshly refurbed, sat here at home ready to go on the car when I get it back. My only plans for it really are to get some top notch coilovers (Ohlins, KW or MeisterR GT1s) and run it a touch lower than factory on the standard wheels, or maybe some nice Enkeis at a later date.

Okay some updates!

I got the car back from MG last Friday, and have been enjoying it so much! The car made some pretty solid figures, especially for an Evo IX 80 series turbo - 472hp @ 1.9bar! It absolutely flies now, and being as it's on an 80 series the spool is still decent so it really does feel quite ridiculous with very little lag. I'm going to borrow a GoPro once the weather gets a bit better and get some videos up hopefully. However, first on the agenda is the brakes - they are dog****!

I've since swapped the wheels over for freshly refurbished OEM 17s with Nankang NS2Rs (which as I've since found out, don't work well on damp February roads when you've got nearly 500hp!). I took the Godspeed two-piece front discs off and had a good clean up of the front brakes in general - it's better than it was but I think the discs are warped beyond help... So for now until I can afford a big brake kit, I'm going to stick some OEM discs on; that way it's not shaking itself to death whenever the brakes get warm!

I've also chucked my reg number on it and given it a clean today after stupidly taking it out in the rain on Tuesday! Here is some pics from the last 10 days -

It's mega annoying that Photobucket have dropped third party image hosting! And I'm not paying $400 to get it back!

So I had some issues with the Evo, thankfully all now sorted and collecting her tomorrow. I'd noticed that ever since Silverstone the car wasn't boosting quite to the 1.9bar it was mapped for - more like 1.5/1.6. I didn't think much of it as the car still felt ballistic... But then 3 weeks ago whilst having a quick play with a Porsche 991 the turbo let go... Big style! Cue a large amount of smoke and zero boost. Excellent!

Thankfully the turbo is under warranty so it has been repaired and is now back on the car. Fingers crossed this is just an anomaly and not going to become a regular thing, as the turbo had only done 2k, 1k of which was running in mileage!

Here is one from just before the turbo let go.
