Copying my text for the barge thread.

Barge purchase and a substantial bit of man maths involved. A while back I was bidding on a very tidy 540i M-Sport, deal fell through due to the fact that the seller was being a dishonest prick.

Figured that I only live once, so I did one better, got myself a BMW M5, an early 2000 E39 to be precise at 3 times the cost....which will be delivered in may..if I'm lucky. Bear with me, long read.

Thing is, that the car is on the home stretch of being "restored" if you will by a guy I know, I was good friends in my younger years with his brother, who now sadly is dead. Anyway, the owner has the hobby and passion of buying older interesting cars and pretty much rebuilding them to a very high standard, and that is all that he does with them, he doesn't drive them, this one he got in october in 2014, and drove it 100 miles home from Stockholm where he bought it, and a week or so later a 550 mile round trip to Malmö in the south to get the dead pixels fixed. Since then the car has been in his garage.

It has since been treated to a full overhaul of pretty much everything, the engine has every seal and gasket bar the head gaskets replaced, it has also been "washed" internally in the lack of better wordage 5 times or so, he showed me the oil filter canister and that was clean enough to eat soup from... Every line or hose has been replaced by brand new OEM items, brand new CCV etc. Smoke and leakdown tested, checked for carbon build up etc.

Clutch and flywheel are brand new OEM, all the driveshaft bearings are brand new OEM. The gearbox has had every seal replaced and the oil changed, same with the rear differential. Pretty much every suspension component aswell are brand new.

Body wise it's in really good absolutely rust free nick, every emblem is brand new, a few bits of window trim had very small imperfections on them, so they were replaced with brand new OEM items aswell. All the lights, all of them on the car are brand new, bought over the counter in the same way as all the other bits were, at our local BMW dealership.

Interior is in great shape, center console was in really bad shape, so that's painted in body color, I can live with it for now, but an OEM item will be sourced at a later date. Brand new steering wheel and gear knob and handbrake handle, all bought brand new over the counter at the dealership.

When I was there on wednesday he was in the process of fitting a brand new Bilstein B14 fully adjustable coil over set.

All the original bits will be supplied with the car, head and tail lights, complete stock suspension, 2 complete sets of 19" allows of which one are brand new Dotz Mugello Black I think they are called with brand new Michelin pilot super sports, the other set are BBS challenge in ok shape, sadly the car is missing it's original set of Style 65's. I'm not a fan of 19's so both sets will be sold and the car will be fitted with a set of Style 37's that I know are half of an inch to narrow in the rear, I can live with that while I source a set of 65's.

it also has a Borla catback exhaust, don't yet know it that is something that I might like, but as long as there is no drone in the car and it's quiet while not driving under load it can stay.

Current owner has saved every reciept for every nut and bolt in a 3 ring binders, over £10000 in parts alone, everything is OEM, from the dealership, so if there is one 15 year old M car that is relatively safe to buy it will be this one.

The car itself as a rather poorly specced one, I guess the guy that ordered it had scraped together the dosh to get an all singing all dancing 540 or a bare bones M5, and chose the latter.

It's Imola red with the F2AT part leather part M-textur Alcantara interior, if it's rare of not I don't know, but I have never seen it before tbh. It's in great shape however. It has the small screen nav unit, electric rear blind and electric heated memory seats, but no sunroof, and I prefer a car w/o if I'm honest so thats just a plus, neither does it have the fold down rear seats, also a plus, since it makes for a much more comfy rear seat. Vin number is GJ19384

Going to be a long time before picking it up, delivery is set to May the 25:th, and the owner can't be rushed, - the car will be delivered when it's prefect- is what I was told..

I have no problem disclosing the price, it's 175.000 Swedish, which in todays exchange rate is £14700. Amd quite frankly a steal concidering the time and expence poured into it.

Got a few snaps today of the WIP, and he's housed in a very small garage, so the angles are a bit..well odd. Those of you of the "OEM only" disposition will be warned wink

Engine bay: All the red bits are powdercoated, and hell, I kinda like it, so it will remain like that, seller told me that he can put it back to stock again for me, but it will take some additional time, a long time aswell, so the red stays. And you'll get the idea of the work done..

Interior:

Misc: Car is not on the ground, nor on it's correct wheels yet. It's not being cut and polished either, mirrors are oem, but in primer, will be painted in body colour again.

It's been pulled up, probably to clean it thoroughly.

Anyway,

That car looks great! It is surprisingly clean! Some of the details are in your face but it's been done very well! I bet you are chuffed to bits.
He's been working on it since october 2014 so it should be clean wink "only" 84000 miles aswell and never in the winter according to Swedish DVLA.

The gaiter is OEM, and as you said, probably just pulled up. Engine bay will stay as it is, the interior will be put back to stock, items are supplied with the car and I can do that job myself I reckon. Exterior will be completely stock looking apart from the wheels, until I can source a set of the correct style 65's.

It looks quite, er, clean. I think you've bought the right one. I too like the upholstery.
I think I got the right one aswell, everything mechanical on the car has been done, and done correctly biggrin

Upholstery was indeed rather rare, 312 supplied in total. I like it alot, sure full black heritage leather would have been better, but can't have it all biggrin

That's it, I'm going to have to buy my third E39 M5. I actually love Imola on E39 M5s.
among the ones sold new in Sweden Imola is the rarest standard color, 17 out of just 166 sold new here.

Have had a few imola ones before, not M5's tho, I find it a rather easy to live with colour aswell, doesn't get dirty in a flash like my now Oxford green 530 which is absolutely hopeless to keep clean, but oh so pretty when it is.

Think that is money well spent, although I don't like the red centre console!
I like it, but it will go back to standard at some point.

Fantastic! Red isn't my cup of tea when it comes to performance saloons or estates, but I could live with that, considering the cars's condition. Interested to see what comes up about this car. Good luck.
I will continue to post pics of the "developement" as it goes on, car is situated just 10 miles from where I live.

For the record, all the bits and bobs on the outside of the car that is now painted red will be put back to standard. New trim and emblems, so it'll look standard apart from the wheels and the slightly lower ride height due to the Bilstein chassie.

Will try to source a set of mint Style 65's or if that proves impossible a set of equally mint Style 37's from an e38 which has the better offset and correct width to that of the Style 65's.

I'll keep posting, but it won't be that often until I take delivery.

Thanks for the input and kind words of encouragement biggrin

My first E39 M5 was Oxford Green, it looked brilliant when recently cleaned and polished. As you say, it was a pain to keep clean. My next was Titanium Silver. I've always wanted Imola or LMB, but there's pretty much no colour I'd turn down.

I'm actually buying a cottage in Sweden, Valdersmarvik if you know it. smile
Absolutely, I know where it is, southern part of Östergötland, by the coast, very rural, very pretty and in the same county as Norrköping, where I live. Just 33 miles apart.

Not far at all then, perhaps I'll stumble across you and your M5.

Off topic, but we're planning on keeping a car at the cottage. Is it worth importing one from the UK or buying one in Sweden?
I really hope so, that would be great biggrin

I don't know what the rules are regarding driving a car for long periods of time on a GB number plate, or any other foreign plate. Easiest would be to keep something already on a Swedish plate I reckon, unless LHD poses a real challenge, which I assume it doesn't.

Progress on the car is ongoing but slow.. Front struts are in, and the rear ones are being installed. A job that should take one day tops, but current owner is extremely picky, everything needs to be cleaned and perfect when installing new bits. All the trim and emblems is supposed to be on now, brand new aswell.

I'll drive over after the MotoGp-race this evening to have a look, I doubt it's down on the ground, but if it is I'll snap a few.

A month 'til delivery, and frankly it's just as good since we had snow last week and well below zero temperatures..

Some more of the (painfully slow) progress. VERY dusty car tho, will shine up better when washed.

Chassis is installed and adjusted to the highest possible setting in the rear, still a little lower than standard but pretty much perfect, front is still way too low, so that's going up about an inch, the goal is just a tad of a drop from the standard ride height.

Brand new headlights, foglights, bonnet emblem, grill and bumper trim installed. The "under-the-engine-covers" still to be attached.

For some reason he has painted the BMW-roundel black on the airbag cover, but I will change that myself or that will take him another week wink But the rest of the interiour apart from the red bits are absolutely immaculate.

Currenty sits on a set of a much more curb-rashed BBS Challenge than I thought, brand new wheel and tyre combo sits awaiting, still looking for a set of correct Style 65's.

Delivery no later than next week, or by then my patience will be running very thin since may 25th was the original delivery date.

Finally. Been waiting almost 2.5 months since I took the desicion go get an M5.

So here's some more pics of the car, now named "Admiral Graf Spee" biggrin Cruiser size, big guns wink (Well, not really)

Took delivery late last night so I haven't driven it more than 20 miles, but everything seems to check out, it's loud, very rapid and tracks straight. Chassie-wise it feels like a new car, pretty much every bushing the suspension is new as are the struts, so there is no squeaks or rattles what so ever.

It came as mentioned before with 2 sets of wheels and tyres, a very rough set of BBS Challenge 19" with a mixed bag of tyres, some Nankans up front and Achilles?? In the rear (never heard of) Had the BBS's been in better shape I would have gone with those and sold the Dotz that are on the car in the pics, but it'll be the other way around. The BBS set will be sold and I'll run with the other set which is brand new on new tires until I can find a set of the correct Style 65's, I'm not really a fan of black wheels nor 19" wheels, hence the search for a correct set, but funds are not un-limited atm wink

Had the car in for a MOT this morning, passed w/o any advisories, and got complimented for the very good condition. It's drier than the Namib desert underneith, should be aswell since pretty much every seal in the entire drivetrain is replaced with new items.

Immidiate plans are to put the stock airboxes back in place, source a few replacement inner trim pieces, I like the red bits but I still want the car to be stock inside atleast. Also get the tracking done. And give it a damn good polish since the paint is very dull.

I was a little worried that the new chassie would ruin the ride and was surprised that it's actually quite comfy, it's stiff, but not S-line Audi bone jarring stiff...

And the Borla cat back is properly loud on acceleration but quiet at cruising speed.

Some pics:

Bonding wash wink

At the MOT station

Bilstein coil-overs

New Steering wheel and red trim...

Nappa leather/alcantara upholstery

Cold start in the garage. It's loud, the potato phone don't do it justice, settles down after a minute.

I like them aswell, much better than the silly combinations they can come with. And they are relatively rare aswell.

I got a bargain I reckon.. Looked thru the whats spent on it since 2014... 123655 swedish... 10 and a half grand Sterling... That didn't include the car biggrin

Fitted the stock airboxes and new filters for those today. Took me, hamfisted as I am 30 minutes. Zero heat-soak since the air isn't drawn from the fiery hot engine-bay any longer, it feels like it's gained 50 bhp..

I'll have to re-paint the wiper stalks and all the side trim on the doors due to PO being sloppy with the painting procedure, unlikely as it it concidering that everything else is very well executed indeed, wiper stalks were tatty so they were repainted some semi-matte black but w/o clear on it, same with the side trim. It didn't really react all that well with the mild de-greaser I used when washing the car, so now it's all spotty. Not a big deal but it's a bit boring to have to redo it again.

And i'll have to claybar the entire car due to overspray residue and a mate of mine is going to cut and polish it after that.

Apart from that all is well wink

I had the car in for an as it turned out very necessary 4-wheel alignment, not really a surprise when basically the whole chassies is new. One rear wheel had .18 degrees of toe and the other one zero and the front was equally out of whack, so handling was a bit nervous. Now it's rock solid on a smooth road, on rutted motorways it tramlines quite a bit, but that's to be expected I guess with fat tyres and stiff suspension.

The mechanic took his time, grumbled alot but got the tyres aligned perfect within factory specs, what he didn't manage was to keep the steering wheel straight... So it has to go in on friday again.

Ill re-upload att the pics using a different provider.`Just got photobucket and it does this? Did I read that right? $399 a year yo be able to upload to a 3rd party? Laughable...

A few during renovation/tinkering/fettling.

Delivery bonding wash biggrin

At home

It's been off the road for 3 years, so it needed an MOT, passed with zero advisories

Misc

No dead pixels, was fixed by PO

Rare'ish Alcantara/nappa interiour

Not show quality obvs but very clean for a 17 year old car, and dry, diff seals replaced

Better view of the Borla cat-back and x-pipe, those of you with better knowledge about these may correct me, but there is supposed to be a resonator where the X is right? Car is loud on start-up and when lit but very quiet on low load even at high speed.

Tow hitch cover removed in the pic, they test that at the MOT, probably never used by the look of it, still specced like that from the factory..

Bilsteins, stiff but still rather comfy, sure they are a little bumpy at low speeds but perfect on a roll

Stock airboxes re-installed

Being aligned

I have since the alignment driven the car a bit more at higher speeds and it's more stable than before but still a bit nervous, I'll probably end up taking it to another shop to redo it again when I find a suitable set of wheels, but this shop will have to straighten the wheel for me..

And the car has stopped drinking any oil, it had quite the thirst tbh when delivered, but after 300 miles or so it has stopped burning any, probably needed to run some after being stored for 3 years,

All is not well however, since last saturday when I took my nieces on a drive the ice-cold AC has stopped working, it went from the north pole to zero pressure in the system basically over night, I will have to get that adressed asap, luckily in that regard this summer continues to suck and hardly produces temperatures above 15c so I don't need the AC anyway, but I like some cold air on my face while driving.

And the paintwork, even though it may look shiny in the pictures is in shambles, it's been repainted fairly recently I guess concidering the lack of stone chips, but it must have been an insurance job concidering how bad it is... It the car is a keeper I'll have to get that fixed by a proper painter....

Last year I bought a Maserati 4200 , it had a set of falkens on that were on about 3mm

It tramlined really badly on the motorway so as the tyres were low I changed them for a set Michelin pilot sport four and it was a transformed car so I'd look at the odd budget tyres as a source of the bad handling
These are brand new, they have maybe 300 miles on them at the most. Kumho Ecsta LE Sport, so they are not some ultra high end tyres, but hardly bottom of the market either. The odd/crappy tyres were on the BBS Challenges, and they are sold.
The current ones will also be sold as soon as find a set of 65's or some other 18" BBS wheel that I like.

Looks great! I'll let you know next time we're in Valdermarsvik. I ended up getting an E46 M3, as I've never had one and thought I should cross it off the list. I'll probably bring it over to Sweden at some point, though I don't think it will be this summer.

A lovely M5 you have there, much better than either of the two I've owned!
Please do, I'll enjoy meeting a fellow PH'er on home turf biggrin

I'd love a tidy 46 M3 too if I'm honest, cracking cars.
