Hi all,

I've had my 440i Coupe for 6 months and 6k miles now and thought it about time to post some pics and info given the other BMW posts. It seems the B58 engine is increasingly popular given it's amazing balance of noise, power and economy.

I've had a few cars in my time and tend buy based on good deals, my last cars being a C63 Coupe and then a BMW 640d. The 640 was a bit of a mistake, I love the looks but moving to a diesel was a huge mistake and very happy to be back in a great sound petrol.

I went a little crazy ordering this car in trying to make up for the complete lack of deals on the M4. The epic deals on the 440i meant I could go a little over the top with the options list so I started with the interior adding the Individual leather, dash and trim which I really love, but with hindsight I won't be buying Opal White again given my love for jeans!

I also went for the HUD and digital dash. The HUD is okay, but you can tell it's still 1st gen as there needs to be more information displayed. Not showing gear and rpm is annoying. The digi dash is fine and worth the extra £295. I really like the Harmon Kardon setup and it's as good as any other audio setup I've had in a car. I've swapped out the cheap feeling shift paddles for the F80 M3's paddles, which are longer and have a more positive feel.

For the exterior I wanted the car to stand out a little so got the M Performance Aerodynamic kit fitted which consists of the carbon rear spoiler, carbon front splitter, rear diffuser and front black grills. I also spec'd the M Performance 20" 405M alloys which I love but they come with runflats so as soon as the rears are worn they'll be swapped for some MP4S tyres. I've fitted BIMTEC 10/12mm spacers as the wheels really did look a little lost (pics below without spacers).

The best feature however is the BMW M Performance Power and Sound Kit (MPPSK). For those who don't know, it's a BMW remap to 360bhp and a full switchable valved exhaust system. It sounds mean and loud on cold start but settles down once warm. In Comfort it's farily quiet and 'stock' unless you break through 4k rpm and the valves fully open. Also when In Sport and Sport+ the valves remain fully open and you get some great pops, bangs and burbles. The MPPSK really does transform the car and moves the 440i more in line with the C43. It's no surprise to me that the next gen 440i will be an M440i with 380bhp and the exhaust as standard.

After 6k miles I still love the car and only wish for some decent tyres (coming soon) and I would like an LSD. After spending so much on the car so far I am struggling to justify another £2.5k for the LSD so it will likely remain the same. I am also considering the idea of getting a JB4 box as there aren't many tuning options for the B58. Many are running the JB4 with great success in the US giving around 410-420bhp although the fuel cap on the B58 is limiting the power that can released from tuning.

Too many options to list overall but one notable omission from me was the Adaptive suspension. Basically I hated it when I test drove a car with it. Much too soft and floaty in Comfort and too hard in Sport. It's not a patch on the setup in the 6 series, but not surprising when it's only 15% of the cost. Anyway I'm rather fond of the stock M Sport setup, especially since the revisions for the LCI model.

Are you sure you cannot add the rpm through the idrive ? I know the M4 shows rpm and gear when in sport mode.
Yes, can't be coded either as non M cars have different hardware frown

I do get shift lights on the digital dash though which help, especially when in Sport+ when it will hit the limiter in manual.

Looks lovely. I like the M Performance stuff and the wheels too. Quite subtle with the black.

I would love to get the MPPSK at some point but only had mine a week, so will have to wait. Are there any stated claims in performance from BMW, as I haven't seen any, just the power gains? Are there also deals to be done if you shop around Dealers?

I agree with you re the adaptive, I think the standard M sport is fine for me, much better than the Audi S3 with magnetic ride that I have just come from.

I'm loving the HUD at the moment and don't find it lacking, the speed limit display seems really good, and the Nav, audio and warning messages all work well. I'm not sure I'd want rpm and gear all the time as too much info makes it less easy to read, but I guess it would be nice to be able to configure it as you want. I'm not sure the digital dash is worth it to be honest, I drove one with, and one without and cant see that it does much unless I'm missing something?

I see you have the White Merino dash as well as the seats, looks very nice. Are you having problems keeping the seats clean then? I have just the seats, have put some Gtechniq L1 on them and will try to clean them regularly and see how it goes.

I've always found the idrive and nav to be pretty good TBF. After 3 years with Audi MMI, I'm glad to have idrive again. It seems more intuitive, and I find the RTTI traffic more accurate and detailed than the Audi one. Will have to wait and see how the routing is on this latest version when I use it.
MPPSK - definitely good gains (35bhp and 40Ib/ft), although I've had it fitted from new so I can't compare the difference with a stock 440i I've driven the M240i and the 440i with MPPSK pulls harder and for longer. I had a play with a 66 plate A45 (380bhp) and there was no difference when rolling.

What I like about the MPPSK is the noise more than anything, it transforms the car from muted (due to emissions regulations BMW have added extra stuff to the stock exhaust) to animal at a switch of a button. My C63 had huge sense of occasion when starting the ignition and driving slowly and the MPPSK adds similar to the 40i. It's obviously no 6.2 V8 but it's great fun driving at slow speed with the pops and burbles! If I could have only one option it would be the MPPSK.

Digi Dash - I really like it, and for £295 I thought it was an easy decision. I like the Sport modes especially for the M4 style shift lights on the RPM dial. But if you have the HUD as well it does take away some of the functionality as it puts album lists etc on the HUD instead of the dash.

White Merino Seats - Yes a nightmare... I wear jeans a lot and I have to clean the seats once a week even with the same G Techniq protector. I use Gliptone to clean and condition them but even after 6k miles they're both stained and wearing prematurely. I still love them, but going to raise the wear on the bolster with BMW.

Overall I'm surprised how much I like the car and can't wait to get the MP4S's fitted!!

Yes, spacers were needed!! Still contemplating a 10-20mm drop as well.

Really hard to show the difference spacers make especially as I went for a more subtle look with 10/12mm rather than the normal 12/15mm

Genuinely impressive looking BMW you have there.
Thank you!!

Great write up and agree with your observations.

On the digi dash, yes it’s not as functional as Audi’s virtual cockpit however it does make the interior feel a bit more modern, although as stated the HUD does take over some of the functionality.

Reading this is making me want the MSPPK, I always saw it as a future upgrade but maybe I should go for it sooner. I’m about to hit 1200 miles where I can start properly opening it up, if I get a bit used to it I may go for it if I can get a good deal! Any tips where might have some offers?
You should be looking at £1650-£1800 fitted with carbon exhaust tips.

There is a thread running on the F3x forum on Facebook and these are some of the quoted prices:

Rybrook Warwick- fitted £1636 all in carbon tips
Coopers Reading - fitted £1635 all in carbon tips
Cooper Durham - fitted £1750 all in carbon tips

I paid £1850 from Sytner Nottingham, so it pays to shop around, get an email quote and take it to your local dealer.

Had mine from delivery mileage and it's epic, most of the noise is under 4k so that's a bonus when running it in.

The car has ticked through 6000 miles now and still loving it. It's hard to drive sensibly and not click into Sport or Sport+ just to hear that exhaust boom!

A few updates...

Coding:
After finally buying the Bimmercode app and using the Bluetooth VGate ODB adapter I made a few subtle changes which have pleased me.
- Mirrors fold automatically on locking (so frustrating that this is not standard)
- iDrive / Radio switch off when you open the car door (you stop, press the ignition switch to turn the engine off and the radio keeps blaring out even when you get out of the car until you lock the doors)
- Heated seats power reduced for level 1 and 2 as I think they're too hot. Level 3 on maximum for fast warmup
- Alert noises changed from standard BMW to BMW i8. Sounds better, also the option of Rolls Royce sounds which I may try
- M Performance opening screen on iDrive instead of standard BMW Connected
- Sport display colours changed from red to orange (subtle but works)
- Trim interior lighting set to max and not connected to dash brightness (connected as default)
- iDrive and reverse camera disclaimers switched off
- Rear view camera speed shutdown increased

I also got the Enhanced Bluetooth coded by an expert a few months ago, but it's nice to know that I can now do it myself in Bimmercode's Expert Mode should BMW provide a software update.

I was quite surprised to see that my rears are already down to 3mm and after only 6k miles it was quite a shock. It does seem that the stock Pirelli 20" runflats are known for premature wear, but at £315 each it's not good. Thankfully I will be replacing with MP4S's but I hadn't really budgeted for the change so soon!

Some more pics to follow in a few days, but future plans are:

1. Major detail and apply a new ceramic coating
2. New tyres
3. JB4

Great looking car OP. I have recently taken purchase of a 340i touring and absolutely love the engine. Thinking of doing some coding too but I think i'll wait until Summer to get that.

As for the MPPSK i think you're 100% right about the extra it gives you. I haven't got it fitted (yet) but I don't think i'm going to be selling the car any time soon so if funds allow after my wedding next year I will get it fitted.

I'm only in Leeds too and i'm guessing by the junctions on the motorway you're chesterfield way so might be good to see the MPPSK in person if you're up for it?
Thanks! The coding bit is so simple and can be done for £50 with the adapter (Amazon) and Bimmercode app.

I live north of Nottingham 5 miles or so from junction 27. Plenty of places to meet near the M1 so if you fancy a drive let me know. I work from home but my diary is a little crazy as out and about lots too.

It's taken me a while to do this mainly due to the bad weather, but I've finally created a short 'one take' MPPSK (BMW M Performance Power and Sound Kit) exhaust video with my GoPro.

Slightly cold exhaust which helped with the initial pops and bangs and then a few hard accelerations when the oil was back up at temperature.

This is the reason why I love this car so much, I couldn't own it without the MPPSK!

A few updates from me...

I've taken delivery of 2 MP4S's for the rears, just waiting for the fronts to arrive and I will finally have some decent tyres on the car. I can't wait to get rid of the RFT's, they are awful.

I used the Easter weekend wisely and spent 10 hours in total doing a full paint correction and detail of my car. I used Gyeon for most things including the Q2 MOHS ceramic coating. The only downside to the coating is that it shows every scratch and chip! But the gloss and look of the car is epic now. I can't clean it for a week, but I am looking forward to easier cleans going forward.

I've also added some more internal cosmetic modifications:

M Performance gearbox surround cover - mainly because stock it looks much too plasticky:

also just had to add the M Performance gear stick cover too so they would match!!

I'd like an alcantara steering wheel so next choice will be whether to buy the M Performance wheel or get mine trimmed by Royal Wheels???

Hello

This is my first post so please be kind!

I've had a 340i for the last year or so have been weighing up the MPPSK option ever since I bought the car. Many of the videos of MPPSK are highlighting the Sport or Sport + modes which sound very loud but what about comfort mode?

I had my car booked in recently for the MPPSK upgrade but backed out of it as I was given a 24hr test drive on an M3 Competition Pack which has an amazing 0% interest PCP deal at the moment. Fantastic car and different animal to a 340i but in its quietest mode it is too loud for me at start up and pulling away needs more revs with the DCT which made the noise amplified and a definite no from my other half!

Having driven the M3 CP i have realised that the 340i is actually a much better combination of performance and everyday usability but its lacking that something. I've think/hope it is the MPPSK kit.

I'm not bothered if sport and sport + are loud, that would be expected but I need a mode that allows me to leave early in the morning without the neighbours complaining, I can shift to sport round the corner!

Can someone say how much louder the car is in comfort mode? Is it anything like the M3 CP as that seemed pretty extreme to me at start up and pulling away even in 'efficient mode'.

I find the comfort mode in the 340i pretty numb so does the MPPSK give a better throttle mapping for that mode or is it still a bit lacking?

I definitely want the MPPSK kit but if it starts much louder than normal it is no go for me unfortunately. A bit of extra noise is fine but if it is full on then I'll have to stick with stock.

Many thanks!

The MPPSK definitely starts to bridge the gap between the 340i / 440i and the M4. It sort of makes the car more of a competitor to the C43 and S4.

The exhaust note in Sport actually sounds better than an M4 in my opinion. The car is louder in Comfort than a stock car but it's not intrusive. It's only when you exceed 4000rpm on full throttle that the valves open fully and you get more noise, but Sport and Sport+ are where it's at (no difference between those modes).

Cold starts in Comfort or Sport are the same and much like a stock car the CAT is fully open but valves are closed and the exhaust is pretty loud for about 45-60 secs. It then quietens down nicely and then after about another 30-60 secs Sport mode can be engaged.

Throttle mappings remain the same as stock, so still a little wooly in Comfort.

Where did you get the paddles from, I really want some standard M3/M4 paddles for my F30 but I can only find big carbon ones.
Found them new on eBay for £169 which is a decent price considering they are £350 new from a dealer. They come from an Eastern European country (can't remember where), as there is a large BMW parts factory there! I love them and they're a huge improvement over stock.

BMW M Performance alcantara steering wheel fitted too now, so must upload some pics!!

Pictures of my new M Performance steering wheel - normally £650, but £375 from Bluebell BMW which was a bit of a bargain! Simple 20min job to fit as well. Love the feeling of it.
