Porsche 996 6.2 V8
Discussion
Thought I would show you Guys my little project. I have steadily been beavering away for the last year building a 6.2 litre V8 Porsche 996.
Reactions on line to the car can best be described as marmite !
There seems to be no middle ground. Although bias, I love it. What's not to like? 525hp, tons of torque, and the burble of a V8.

Well that looks amazing. What sort of costs are involved in the swap?
How is access for servicing?
Thank you. Cost wise: Let's just say it's not cheap ! I see lots of man maths on the internet of people trying to do this cheaply. I'm not saying it cannot be done for a reasonable cost, but depends on alot of variables. One major factor is that I have had to import quite alot of parts from the US. Looks cheap, but import taxes and shipping sucks! How is access for servicing?
Maintenance wise, I am literally just finishing running her in, but access to the oil filter and plugs is a sinch. These big yank V8's dont need much maintenance. Just oil & filter changes for the most part.
Thanks all.
To answer some of your questions:
Same model 996 as the Gas Monkey car. Theirs had a 480hp crate motor, mine has a 525hp crate motor (with a few tweaks). I was going to make this look the same, but not sure now.
Nearly everything still works as it should - main thing that does not is the PSM.
Ac works.
Noise - totally dependant on the exhaust you build. There is no off the shelf item. I made mine a little loud - I wanted people to hear the rumble lol
RPM is slightly lower as the LS tops out at 6500, or at least mine does. Depends on the engine. you can make the LS rev to 8k. So I have lost a little top speed.
I used the Renegade kit. Don't be fooled by this, all they supply is the adaptor, engine mounts and not a lot else! so it it all up to you to work it out.
Lots of wiring and integrating. I'm still running the Porsche instruments.
I had to cut a chunk out of the rear chassis -it's a tight fit! (note - nobody has reported any problems with doing this, and there a fair few of these about now, particularly in the USA)
My car runs 2 ECU's.
HTH.
I particularly appreciate the comments on the quality of the work. I spent ALOT of time engineering and making sure every part I fabricated looks as stock as possible.
To the question 'is it quick' - yes ! This is my 2nd LS powered car. My 1st was a 7 litre TVR. The Porsche is not as quick as that, but it does go well. Main point with these big motors is not just the power. They are very driveable, and its easy to make rapid progress with so much torque on tap.
Will try and get some video this weekend. Assume easiest way is to upload it to YouTube and put a link here?

This is awesome, did you do it all yourself?
Yup, did it all myself. My wiring integrates with the Porsche ECU to make various stuff work, mainly the tacho. Both the Porsche and the LS use a 58 tooth reluctor wheel, so getting the tacho to work was easy. A big challenge was the wiring - there are no instructions - you have to work it all out yourself. Luckily there is a Facbook page for us LS swappers, and it has been a great help !unclemark123 said:

What functions have you retained the Porsche ECU for?Note my car is 4wd.

Assuming you used the LS7 in the TVR, did you contemplating putting one in the Porker?
I did not build the TVR, I bought it already done, and then spent the next year trying to refine it. It came with a highly modified LS7 converted to wet sump.Would have loved one in the 996, but they are big £ so I had to draw the line somewhere. One limiting factor if you want really big power in the 996 is the box - they are ok up to around 600hp, anything more and you have to use the turbo box or similar, and they are rare/£££.
Just to note my car uses the crate GM LS3/525. It has a hot cam in it. I actually started with a 430 hp motor, but I changed the cam to the 525 spec so my engine is identical to the crate 525. A little lumpy on tickover, but goes very well.
