Howdy fellow PistonHeads,

Feels like it was only yesterday I was in secondary school skipping football with my friends to instead beg my maths teach to allow me access to the classroom computers so i could spend the entirety of my lunch googling the E46 M3 & E39 M5

There was something absolutely epic about a BMW being able to keep up with a Ferrari (360 Modena at the time) - just wow. Fast forward the clocks 15yrs I got my hands on a clean E46 M3 and was chuffed to bits. I love it to the moon & back ... but there was always 'that other one'. The E39 M5

Not content on just owning one and not the other I knew I had to bite the bullet and add an E39 M5 to the driveway. My search for one was difficult - in-fact I was very close to accepting defeat not being able to find a clean car within a reasonable budget after a 2 year long search

But then what happened next was ermmm ... pretty chaotic. Wife goes into labour, I spend the next 3 nights in hospital laying beside her keeping her company and trying to keep myself entertained with nothing but push up handles and an iPhone 7. I did the usual religious ritual of doing a quick search on PistonHeader, Autotrader, Car&Classics and then finally .... eBay. On eBay much to my shock a beautiful E39 M5 Aegean Blue with Extended Champagne leather was up for sale. Blessed with a healthy baby boy , exactly 5 days later I collected the M5

To summarise my E39 M5 ownership so far - it's lived up to every single expectations!! Dare I say I love it slightly more than my E46 M3. Here's a picture of it absolutely filthy after hitting some country roads ....

Here's a thread I had saved to my favorites many years back - Gustav from M5Board introducing a car to which I would eventually own

Cheers guys !

The car is registered in Jan/2002 making it a facelift. Being 17 years old naturally the car isn't 100% perfect , there's a few dead pixels on the dashboard which need addressing and the paintwork is in need of a paint correction. But largely the car isn't in too bad a condition. Preventative maintenance work is also on the radar namely rod bearings & chain guides. I'll be working my way through the list of items gradually over the year and next. Most likely the car will be visiting Steve @ Mr Vanos for the preventative jobs mentioned above OR perhaps Phil @ CPC

Thanks all for the really nice comments I really appreciate them

I absolutely agree about the wood trim - for now I’ll be preserving the originally of the car but would definitely consider changing it out for something that looks a bit more smart

Here’s a few snaps of the E46 M3

Being an E39 M5 fanatic it’s always disappointing to see the lack of them on the road or at local car shows

I wanted to connect driver’s of these cars and as 2 of my good friend have this car already I created a what’s app group for us. The group has been growning since and as it stands there’s 27 owners on there now. Here’s a picture of some of us out on a foggy Sunday morning

The what’s app group is for UK based E39 M5 owners who are up for drives, meeting and discussing anything E39 M5 related. If anyone is interested please DM me your number and i’ll get any of you added

Prerequisite of course is that you must own an E39 M5

All requests for the E39 M5 owners whats app group should be replied to. If i've missed anyone please let me know

First two jobs I did immediately after getting the M5 was replacing the worn gear-knob with a brand new one from BMW. Second job was getting the steering wheel re-trimmed by Jack @ Royal Steering Wheels. What a legend he is at his job ...

Here's pictures of the gear-knob before and after. Can't find any before and after's of the steering wheel frown

An update on E39 M5 ownership thus far ..

EPIC!

Having had the car 8.5months its lived up to every expectation so far. I was expecting it to be a brilliant car. It's been the daily driver for the past 2 weeks. Replaced the rear tyres with a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4's and the grip is just phenomenal now , even in the wet

Had a nice drive to Bicester Village the other week. I flew past a 997 Carrera S then the Porsche decided to give chase and followed me from Banbury. I could see I was being followed and when I parked up at the Bicester Village car park a father and son appeared and they complimented how lovely the car was. They kindly asked if I should ever wish to sell the car that I would give them first refusal and they left me with their business card. Incredibly nice guys

I see myself doing a euro trip in this car very soon. I've completely forgot about my E46 M3 since owning this car ... it's been sat neglected in the corner of my driveway since picking up the M5. Some bad weather on route back from office today ....

Lovely pair of M cars OP, in fact to my eyes they’re the best looking, best proportioned M cars to date. The M5 is particularly lovely.
Thanks ! I agree, I prefer the M5 slightly more .. just marginally though

Stunning, OP. Absolutely my favourite M Car of all time and, as yet, one which I haven't had the pleasure of owning - I've owned an E36 M3 Evo, E46 M3 and I currently have an F80 M3 Competition Pack (in San Marino Blue, a colour to rival even Aegean Blue wink ).
Thanks for the message. I think you'll absolutely love it dude - try one !

I have a good friend who owns a San Marino Blue F82 M4 Competition who recently picked up a Le Mans Blue E39 M5. Approx 3 months into ownership he's hardly using his M4 anymore - crazy ! Every time I see his M4 I just love the colour - your F80 with the extra 2 doors must be fabulous ! Definitely a bucket list car for me

Fantastic car and thread smile

Feel free to join us over on the BMW 5 forums if you haven't done so already wink

https://forum.bmw5.co.uk/

I am seriously tempted by these cars; I've got a lovely Jasp import 530i touring currently, but part of me is wanting to get back to a manual again and it'd either be an E39 M5 or E46 M3... Fear is the M3 will be too small for me

Always like leaving the garage open when cleaning my car... smile

Shame the LMB one is SORN - it needs a bit of work on the timing chain guides and tensioners as well as the bodywork...

But at least I've still got the other as a daily smile

Amazing ! 2 is better than 1

btw feel free to DM me your number if you'd like to join an E39 M5 owners whats app group. Will organise a big gathering this summer
