Third time lucky, can I keep a Megane RS a year?
Previous 2 were sold just before I had them a year, due to circumstances at the time making them no longer an option. Yet, I still go back to these French pieces of tat, why? Well; that's a question my Mrs would love to know as well, but the honest answer is no other car has got under my skin like these little baguette-mobiles.

Anyway; to the car!

Here it is, the day I picked it up.

Deliciously standard. This one, is a little special and somewhat uncommon, even for the already uncommon Megane RS. It's an Extreme Blue RS250 Cup, one of only 18 registered in the UK. This has a light (I mean light) smattering of options, including: DRL's, RS Monitor and Keyless entry, and that's it!

Having owned 2 previously, one being a facelift 265, and a pre facelift 250 lux, this certain feels more spartan compared to those 2. This is the first one without the Recaro CS Sportsters I've owned. This has very few options, which, for me, was perfect due to what I want to do with it.

Both previous RS' have been dailies first and foremost, and cars to use on track taking a definitive back foot on the priorities list, meaning some of the modifications I wanted to do had to take a back foot.
Now, due not needing the car for daily use, I can do what I've wanted to do for a while, and turn it into a car that I can drive to track in comfort, doing decent economy and a big boot, turn up to a circuit, empty the boot and spend all day worrying expensive machinery.

First up, was to do some quick, remedial jobs that help take age off a car, and help tidy it up somewhat. First up was de-yellowing all of the lights.
I'm not a fan of the xenon, in reflector lens look, it looks crap and never suits the car. So I've settled with some LED sidelights, and Osram Coolboost blue 4300k halogen bulbs. It removes the yellow from the headlights, adds a little further range, but most importantly, doesn't blind people and make you like a penis. This suits me.

Before:

After:

The one thing the put me off this, was the huge amount chrome on the front end, with headlights looking a little awkward, and to my eye, odd. Thanks to some satin black paint, and liberation of the Mrs' hairdryer, I split them and sprayed the inserts black.

Refitted:

This, to me, tidying the front end up hugely, and with the new black front badge gave the front end a much meaner look.

As I had the front badge, it would've been rude not to fit the rear, and remove the MEGANE badges across the back end of the car. I initially wanted to keep the RS badge in the corner, but whilst removing the badges the tar and glue remover I was using peeled that badge too, so off that came too. I initially didn't like the badge-less rear look, but i'm warming to it now.

Then, after much deliberation I fitted a blanking plate, and an ITG induction kit to the car. This is intake was fitted to the white one and I loved the noise, so it made sense to get it on this too. It's also been shown on dynos to add about 10hp to the car, which was enough to persuade me to buy it. The blanking plate, well, it makes choo-choos and I'm 4 years old inside, so this makes me happy.

So far, this is where it sits.

Next plans are wheels & Brakes, coilovers, POWERRRR, and many many trackdays inbetween.

I'm normally crap at keeping these up to date, but I will try to keep this updated.

This deserves more input from others. Looks like your experience from the previous two has already given you a good idea of what to do, and if you stick to subtle mods it's going to be a cracker.

Fingers crossed you can keep this one longer than the last two!
We can only but hope! I'm currently looking for some wheels and coilovers for it. I know what I want, but it's just waiting on payday now!

Looks great in Extreme blue. The 19" (I can't remember the name of them now) diamond cut wheels look ace against this colour, the black can get a bit lost.

Good work so far!
Part of the reason I picked this one was due to the colour. I knew they were rare, and looked amazing in blue.
The one thing that I don't like about the car at the moment is the wheels. They look lost in the arches, and the black doesn't hugely appeal to me. I'm on the lookout for a set of OZ Ultraleggeras, ideally in bronze. I don't really want to buy new, as they're hugely expensive and you lose a load of money. Me, being the tight fisted git I am, doesn't want to buy new. I am looking at a set of road wheels, and track wheels.
Road wheels will still have semi slicks on, but something like Michelin Cup2's, or Yoko AD08R's. The track wheels will probably have R888R's or Nankang AR1's; not sure yet.

Coilovers are going to be BC Racing. for their adjustability. After that, it'll be power, noise, etc.

I have a little update.

Namely, 4 of these.

OZ Ultraleggera; 18x8 ET48 5x114.3. Perfect Megane fitment.
Currently has some shot Pirellis on. But getting some 245/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's going on today.

Awesome wheels too! thumbup
I'm not 100% sure, but it does mean the 250 cup in blue is rare as hell! It's odd, as most are grey, white and yellow.

Got them fitted, and cleaned the tyre soap off. 245 on an 8j wheel looks huge!

I've also booked a trackday at Pembrey on the 29th June. Have to start the prep!

Thanks!
I need to get it cleaned, and some nice photos taken. There's an RS coffee morning in Bristol I'm going too, so may dig the DSLR out and take some decent photos. It could do with a full correction detail, but at the minute I'd rather drive it driving

Nice car OP. I remember seeing this up for sale and was tempted due to the rare colour. Although I like bright coloured cars so ended up with a yellow one. Plus I also like the look of the xenons. Different strokes for different folks I guess laugh
I need to get a readers ride thread up too.
Tbh, it was what swayed it for me. I had a White, and a black one previously and wanted a different colour, and loved the LY, but didn't want the hassle if I dinged a barrier. But thinking of that, I've picked a rarer colour than LY...
I had Xenons on my old white one, and they were sublime. I wasn't keen on the halogen bulbs and did consider passing the entire car because of it, but I thought that once painted inside, they'll look better and work just as well, as I rarely drive it at night anyway.

Doing any brake mods for the track day or just going as it is? Seen a lot of people switch to the plain discs due to the slotted ones eating up pads on track.
I am yeah, currently got it all in the basket ready for payday, it includes: BC Racing coilovers, new pads front and rear, (discs are fine), new lines and fluid. I'm happy to forego the coilovers, but I've managed to boil the brakes on a back road blast at 6-7/10ths already. The brakes will be done, 100%.

Ive got a soft spot for blue cars; great wheel choice as well.
Thanks! I'm going a sort of blue and yellow theme with the car, so the intercooler is going to have yellow logos on it, yellow towstrap and I'm considering getting the blade/DRL holder thing pinstriped in yellow too. I'm not a fan of OTT styling, but I think that can look good, as it won't be enough to ruin the front end, but will be enough to break the blue and black up a bit.

I have a trackday booked. Pembrey, with Opentrack on 30th June.

In prep for this, a few parts were ordered, mainly:

Hel Braided brake lines.
Motul RBF600 fluid
Performance Fricton Z rated pads.
EBC Yellowstuff rears.
Pure Motorsport Rear camber shim kit.
Pure Motorsport Stud Conversion.
And finally, BC Racing Coilovers. 8kg front springs, 7kg rears. This is supposedly the ideal fast road/trackday setup.

All of this should be going on the car in the next week or so. I'm looking to see about getting cooksport to set up the geo.

Great thread, having always been a renaultsport fan and owned a few 172/182/R26 examples. I have just bought a really cheap Megane Rs250 that I am collecting on Sunday.

I'll be interested to hear how you find the BC's, I am just contemplating purchasing some Gaz Golds on an introductory offer on at the moment.

Good luck !
Cheers! They're getting fitted and setup up by Cooksport themselves next week. All being well I'll be able to give first impressions shortly after.

Welcome to the Mk3! If you're on Facebook I would join the Renaultsport groups, as there is a lot of information on there, and a lot of very tasty metal. People will often post up about TD's they're doing and whether people will be going along etc.

I properly suck at updating these!

I had the coilovers, brakes, stud conversion, mid box chop and everything fitted by Cooksport. When I got it back, it looked like this.
[url]|https://thumbsnap.com/NLJKbiy9[/url

It's a bit low!
]
But it's got the coilovers on, and 2.7 degrees of front camber each side.

The mid box chop has transformed the whole car. It adds so much drama to the car now and pops and bangs like it always should've.

So a week after having this done, It was booked on for Pembrey with Opentrack.

It was a stupid early start to travel from Bristol but it was well worth it. There was 2 Megane's (including mine), an FN2, Mini Cooper S and a Focus ST.
During the day I took a few of my mates out, had a few lovely dices with other cars and overall had a great time leaning harder on the car than I ever had.
The over-riding impression was A. The grip from the camber, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's were insane, and the braking performance was nothing short of incredible. It was making the passengers nearly headbutt the dashboard, and a couple of times cars nearly rear-ended me because of the braking. A mate said after he got out that he was about to scream brake as he
thought I'd forgot to brake, and later said he would've preferred to have hit the barriers.

Almost all trackday photos are the same, and boring to those who don't care! But The car performed faultlessly, and managed to keep up with an FK2 type R, a couple of Turbo MX5's and an S2000. There was a white one though that I could not keep up with!

It did highlight how bad the seats were though, as I was falling out of them and bracing the wheel on most turns. So some buckets are next, without doubt. Power will be done over the winter I think.

It's going to Forge Action day on 7th September, and I have Curborough sprint course booked for the end of sept, and Combe in early November. I want to get it booked on for another trackday before hand. I'm unsure as to which yet.

All I did with mine prep wise, was take the backseats and boot stuff out, and wash it. It performed perfectly all day.

Not much has really happened with the car in the last few months - It's stayed more or less the same. I did some basic maintenance on the car, an oil change and all was fine.

After a couple of months though it would have an issue where if I clipped the limiter when warm, after changing gear and getting back onto the throttle the whole car would bog right down, and run really rough for a couple of seconds, and then it cleared itself up. It started off intermittent, until it was getting more and more regular.

I plugged into the car to see if there were any codes displayed, which there wasn't. However the tool I had showed ignition advance and I could see the values were being thrown way off normal, when the car was running rough. Some checks through the service history showed that it hadn't ever had a fuel filter change (more on that later) and spark plugs hadn't been done for at least 2 years.

Biting the bullet I ordered an OEM fuel filter, and new OEM spark plugs to see whether these together would resolve the issue.

Pulling the plugs shown

Thankfully it did.

I went to Forge Action Day with a couple of mates and managed to do 2 track sessions. I managed to get a couple of pictures during the track sessions.

A couple of weeks later I did a Sprint event at Curburough Sprint course, and as it was damp, I got some awesome photos of the car.

As it was wet I figured after 1 or 2 laps it wasn't going to dry out for a while, so decided to start pissing around, making the car slide. Amazingly, the photographer was able to catch a couple of slides on the track.

During the wet I managed a 1:32, which is 2 seconds off my dry record of 1:30, in an old megane, with worse tyres, brakes, and no coilovers. There was at least 5 seconds difference between wet and dry. It did dry out during the day, but as I was coming down with a cold as fast as it was drying out I bailed and made the 3 hour journey home so couldn't get in a properly fast lap.

However, during the day I managed to confirm which seats I wanted to fit, and that I physically fit in them. Being, errr, of larger persuasion I wanted to check before ordering. I've settled on Recaro Pole Position ABE's, which balance support and comfort well enough for me.

Next up is seats and powwwwaaahhhhh.

It's definitely worth modifying. The ITG induction kit is worth doing as it adds loads of drama and intake noise to the car.

The final trackday of the year. Castle Combe - Nov 1st.

The day started wet. Which with me on Cup 2's was not a good start! The morning sessions were slippery. this made it a proper mission to get any heat into the rear tyres, which meant any attempts at taking a corner slightly quickly meant oversteer, and quite a few times there were some massive slides. Most of them I managed to recover apart from one heading into the first chicane, I had to bail and slam on the brakes. I ended up sliding gracefully onto the grass at about 5mph without any damage other than a bit of grass on the splitter.

I went with a couple of mates, who also had Megane RS', but there was a real mix of cars from Abarth 500's, to GT4 spec M3's.

After lunch, the group running the group (RSUK on facebook) let some cars on track to take photos, which I was included in. Some photos below, including some of the day.

After lunch the open pit sessions began, which, along with the dry weather was when I began to lean on the car. it was immense fun, however not without issue.
The brakes were starting to get a bit long after about 12 hard, back to back laps, and even after a cool down lap the brakes were still smoking when I came into the pits. It confirmed the need for some stronger pads (only got PF Z rated at the moment) and some brake cooling, which I will be looking into over the winter. Whilst on track the oil temp reached 105 degrees which didn't worry me too much, but the intake temps were reaching high 30's, so I'm going to be looking into opening up some direct air flow to the filter to help bring those down.

During the open pit in the afternoon I managed a best time of 1:21.3, some 1.5 seconds quicker than the previous time I was there.

However, following on the from the best lap, coming into Camp I braked a little too late, and ended up having an off. Amazingly the car behind me caught me going off.
Luckily I didn't bury it in the tyre wall, but I come close, and managed to catch air a couple of times, and even sit on my own balls!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciTzPz-M_C8

After a cooldown lap I came into the pits to see if there was any damage, and the underside and the splitter hadn't fared well.

Not pictured here is the 2 massive holes in the undertray, along with enormous amounts of scraping damage, and enough grass to keep about 10 cows fed for a month. Luckily, the suspension, brakes, wheels and all the running gear are okay so it's just cosmetic, and a new pair of undercrackers. My bk was also safely recovered from the ribs back to the correct position too.

From January the car will be going onto daily duties for a bit, so the front will be raised (despite it looking great) and the dampers fully slackened off.

It doesn't look too serious of an 'off' - it looks like you followed the line of the car in front and I have to admit I have done this before too and had a similar result!

How did the car fare in comparison to the M3s? I've previously had a Clio 197 with megane 225 Conversion at 270bhp but now own a BMW M4 which is also my daily though - curious to see how they compared!
I was the car in front haha. You see me overtake, and the car behind follow me off.
In the bends it was v close (the M3 slightly quicker due to have 275 fronts, I had 245's, but I have more front camber) but in straight it had the legs. I think it was boosted, running around 550hp iirc, so it was clocking 160 at the end of the start/finish straight, I was 135ish.

Good job keeping the car out of the tyre wall at those speeds on grass! Can be like ice at those speeds.

Are you running the standard intercooler? I know it and the standard rad aren't the best, but those intake temps seem quite high considering air temps would have been bloody cold. Oil temps seem ok though.

On another note, not sure what to think of the exhaust on that grey/blue Megane. biggrin
It was a full code brown moment I'll be honest! I did chuckle seeing the rear of the car bounce up haha!

I'm running a standard cooler, and standard power for the moment. There's not much air flow going directly onto the filter tbh so it can suffer heat-soak a little bit. With the damage, I'm going to include a few jobs at once. Most likely intercooler, new splitter, maxton splitter, 265 DRL conversion, brake ducts, and dremel out some of the lower grill to push air directly onto the filter.

As daft as it sounds, I kind of like it sporting it's wound, to me it shows it's being used (and abused) properly!

Great thread which I've read with interest being a fellow RS250 owner.

Do you run any sort of brake cooling? Have read that these need it and looking to track mine early next year.
Thankyou!

I don't at the moment, no. However under both front wheels there's a little flap thing directs air away from the wheels. I only found out (after destroying one at combe) removing them aids in brake cooling. Stronger pads and better fluid are the main things to really get them stopping well, lines do certainly help a lot, but it's not critical imo (worth doing if the lines are getting on a bit though)

I do plan to do it, but it'll be done as the bumpers off for a few things, like intercooler, splitter repair, 265 DRL conversion, getting some better flow to the air filter and I'll work in brake cooling then I think.

That's good to know thanks. Seems odd that they would design a flap to take air away from the brakes confused

One of your posts mentioned the fuel filter and you were going to come on to it later... what was it? Have a feeling mines never been done so will be sorting that soon!
It's fuel economy, as mentioned. Mine, weirdly had been replaced, but the plugs, and the filter did clear the issue up. The fuel filter isn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. I would suggest getting a bowl at the ready though, and do it with a low tank. The clips are very fiddly, and can break easily. Have a couple of small jubilee clips on hand incase they brake.

I only found out about the flaps after I destroyed one, and when I eventually get around to cleaning it I'll remove the drivers side one too aha!

I thought I should finish this off. The Megane was sold on Monday. As I start a new job with a commute requiring a car I decided as the Megane didn't lend itself synonymously with comfort for daily use along some not great roads. The natural choice was to buy a daily, and carry on with the Megane, but due to space constraints at home I didn't have space for 2 cars. I therefore decided to hunt for a car that can do the daily duties, and something not st on track.

I wanted RWD, as I'd had a lot of FWD cars now, and wanted something with a V8.

Something decent on track.
V8
RWD.

It had to be didn't it. It's a 2011 M3 DCT Comp Pack.

I don't have a huge amount planned for it at the moment. Intake, exhaust, some wheel spacers and a BBK. Maybe a few aesthetic things like a GT4 splitter, lip spoiler, and a diffuser. I'll start it's own thread though.
