1998 Porsche 996
Discussion
A Long long time ago (mid feb) when times were simpler and we were allowed to go out... this came up on eBay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-911-Carrera/143...
as the price was about right and id had a bit of wine i decided to have a bid, nearly a week later i was still winning at around £8000, The auction ended on a wednesday as i was travelling home from work my colleague who was driving encouraged me to increase my bid incase of a last minute rival! i did and managed to outbid another person and win the car for £9110! i had set myself a budget of £10,000 to purchase a car so was happy id have some left over towards tyres and servicing/maintenance.
Naturally The day i picked it up there was a rain storm! the drive home was interesting probably due to the mismatched and very much under inflated tyres

when i collected the car there was a problem with the aftermarket pioneer radio, the seller told me it was due to the memory card inside failing and send me an eBay link to purchase a new one, he also knocked more than the price of the card off the car, as the radio would come on and play static/random radio stations when driving with no way other than pulling the fuse to turn it off this became my first job on the car
Luckily it was a straight forward swap of cars and everything works as it should,

Next on the list of annoying things to fix was the squeky wipers! my niece then demanded the keys so she could go out for a drive
I then purchased an auto glym headlight restoration kit in an attempt to turn the headlights from yellow to clear! i however appear to be lacking any before picture and only this after pic, i only used the finest sand paper as i was very cautious however they came up alot better and i will probably do them again at some point as there are a couple of sections im not happy with
As mentioned earlier in the thead when i collected the car it was sporting a very old pair of continentals on the front which were cracking on the sidewalls and a mismatched pair of another brand on the back, this was sorted out with a set of Michelins

Next up it was time to get the car serviced as it was overdue and the service history not exactly comprehensive, after asking on this forum a few people reccomended GCR central in wigston leicestershire, which is local enough for me so i booked the car in for a major service and brake fluid change,
I was very happy with the service from GCR and relieved that they didnt find too many issues with the car! will be taking it back there in the future for a spare key and a set of coilpacks as mine are showing their age!

Right bar a wash or three this brings us upto the past week, The car was due to have the front bumper and rear spoiler painted due to damage and peeling paint however this has been postponed due to the lock down... after reading through the threads about their respective cars by ATM and Cornedbeef i decided to do a bit of work on my car myself
One click and collect from halfords later... Usually i borrow my dads jack etc, but his is in storage and hes living with me!
First job was to remove the trim under the front and check the battery tray area and give it a hoover/clean out
The next job was to remove the front bumper and have a clean out of any leaves/debris trapped between the condensers and the radiators
The whole job was pretty easy except for one rounded off screw, and one of the pieces of undertray has seen much better days so i will be ordering a new one at some point!

at the minute its a spare spare car, i use a work van in the week then have an old fiesta van as a cheap run about! there are a few receipts with it but not really any for servicing, cars fine on acceleration and idle and things as for coil packs im tempted to do them myself now i have time on my hands! other plans for the car are change the gearknob, re furb the alloys, and tidy up the paint work in a couple of places!
The spec is fine for me, not worried about heated seats, just wanted a manual gearbox and not a convertible!

I finally got around to ordering the coil packs and plugs and tubes for this so there might be an update soon! still waiting for the body shop to get back to work so i can have the paint work touched up! had to cancel it due to corona and have changed jobs twice in the last two months! more recently my time (and money!) has been spent on the 944 i bought but at the rate im going they will both be on the road for when things are back to a sort of normal level! really looking forward to having a proper drive in the 911!
well i have got the new coil packs and spark plugs and spark plug tubes! i was going to fit them last saturday but worked and then the sunday was spent/wasted on the 944! However i got a txt midweek from my friend saying he could get my car in for the bumper and spoiler to be painted so i dropped it off today!
you can see the paint peeling off the rear spoiler... i cant believe how dirty it is, not even been driven for two weeks
