After an almost 2 year driving hiatus, I was feeling really bored with lockdown already way back in May 2020, and even more bored of not having a car. My mate talked me into a Mini, so I picked up this Mini Cooper S R53. It had a fair few modifications, and was a hoot to drive for what it was.

However, what I really wanted was a sports car; hot hatches are never as satisfying to drive. So when my pay increased at work last year, I thought I would treat myself by selling the Mini on and getting myself a sports car.

I set a budget of 10k to get a car that would be mostly a weekend toy, and could handle the occasional road trip or track day. I narrowed it down to either a 986/987 Boxster, or an MX5 NC BBR of some description. I made early enquiries on a BBR Turbo, but it sold very quickly. In the end though, the lure of getting my first Porsche was too strong to resist, so I ended up with this nice 986 Boxster S.

Unfortunately, after 6 short months, it was written off in a non-fault incident. I enjoyed the car but didn’t really spend as much time with it as I’d have liked. However, I formed the opinion that while it was a very capable car, it was also quite ‘serious’. It was so good it was almost dull, an opinion echoed by the same mate who suggested the Mini. I liked it but didn’t quite love it.

I was also starting to have concerns about the cost of running the Porsche, especially with the looming cost of living crisis on the horizon. I could still afford it, but it would become a significant expense, so in a way, the opportunity to get into a cheaper car was actually welcome, and this was how I ended up in “the other choice”..

This MX5 Launch Edition BBR Super 200 appeared on my FB feed, and was a good few grand less than the settlement I received for the Boxster, and it comes with cheaper running costs, so it is a very good fit for my life and priorities. It does have high miles (135k) but it seems to be in rude health, and has all the kit I would have fitted myself. 4 brand new Michelin PS4 tyres and a matching hardtop was the cherry on top.

The previous owner was a very nice chap who worked at Lotus Hethel, and he’d clearly looked after the car. A great guy to deal with, if only all transactions could be this pleasant.

The car is a fully specced NC, with heated red leather interior, climate control, Bose stereo etc, so is actually a nice place to be. The Porsche was a bit more spacious and comfortable, but this isn’t bad at all, and certainly less ‘sombre’ looking.

The modifications include the BBR Super 200 kit. For those that don’t know, it comprises an uprated manifold, cams, panel filter and a remap. It produces 197 bhp @ 7300 rpm and 161 lb ft @ 4150 rpm. This is nearly 40 bhp and over 20 lb ft more than standard. It still has the standard exhaust - an uprated one might liberate an extra 5 bhp, at the expense of extra noise, more on that later.

Handling modifications include the obligatory Eibach springs to lower the comedy ride height, and it has Rodisons upgraded pads and uprated fluid.

I guess what most people will be wanting to know is what it’s like to drive, particularly with these modifications. Unfortunately, I can’t compare it to another NC as this is the first I’ve driven, but I have owned an NA RS-Ltd, another NA MX5, and have test driven the NB, so I’ve a reasonable idea of how an MX5 should drive. I’m also a big MR2 Roadster fan so I have a fair bit of experience in little Roadsters. See “My Garage” for my history.

Let’s cut to the chase. I am a huge fan of this car. It feels alive even at modest speeds, and made me realise how boring the Boxster was to drive sedately. You can easily tootle around in this and still feel like you’re having fun. The car is lovely and responsive to your inputs and is a pleasure to pilot.

When you press on, it really comes alive. Despite the standard exhaust, the upgraded manifold and rev limit really help to liberate the sound of the engine. It has good torque from about 3K and really starts to pick up the pace at 4K. After that, it revs in a linear fashion all the way to almost 7500 rpm. The sound is like an old school twin cam, making a satisfying “fwarp” in the mid range raising to an angry howl as it closes in on the rev limit.

Also, 200 bhp and 160 lb ft is a really nice amount of power in a fairly light car like this. It’s not mega quick obviously (0-60 in approx 6s, with a ton arriving 10s later), but it should turn in similar figures to the latest ND2 with the 184 bhp engine. This BBR outdoes it on power and torque but the NC is heavier. As with most N/A engines, it does need winding up, so it’s not a drag racer, however, keep it on the boil on a bendy country road and suffice to say I’m not left wanting more at all, it feels plenty quick enough.

The previous owner, who had the BBR kit fitted, said it made a big difference to the car, stating the stock engine lacked character and felt flat, and the BBR kit resolves this entirely, transforming it into the car it should have been from the factory. I’ve watched videos on YouTube of standard NC1’s and it does seem to me that at the very least you can tell the engine sounds a bit ‘meh’ as standard.

The handling is typically amusing in the usual MX5 way. I love how mobile it feels on the throttle, the steering has a nice amount of feel, the gearshift is superb as usual, the brakes are strong and completely fade free, and along with the extra grunt, it’s a superb combination. I find it really encourages you to drive like a hooligan, and its main party trick is that doing 60 on a country road feels like you’re travelling quickly, and a chunk more than that feels like you’re travelling very quickly. This is the true benefit of lightweight cars for me. Always involving, always fun.

Some people dislike the NC, but I’ll stick my head out and say that with a few mods, it’s easily as fun to drive as the RS Ltd was, but in a more modern package and with a far better engine. With this kit, these cars are an absolute bargain given what cars are going for nowadays.

Some people may be interested to hear how it compares with the 986 Boxster S, so I’ll say right off the bat that I find the MX5 BBR 200 the more fun car, and is definitely the one I’d choose as a weekend car. It just feels more raw and exciting, more agile and just more up for mischief. The Porsche is a more serious car. Better for a long road trip, thanks to its refinement, but definitely not for blasting around on a British B-Road. The fact that it’s also a much cheaper ownership proposition makes it all the easier to enjoy too.

Future plans - First I will get it checked by the MX5 specialist later in the year for a health check, although no pressing need yet, as it's been boringly reliable in a typically Mazda way, and I’ll get a health check and rust treatment done well before the winter comes. The soft top could do with refurbishing but it doesn’t leak so no urgent need. I could maybe sell the hard top and get the soft top refurbed.

If the dampers are shot, then I could potentially get Meister coilovers, but if not then I’m fine with the way it handles for the most part. A slightly better ride would be nice, but not if it came at the expense of fun. Thicker ARBs are also an often touted upgrade, but again, I’m not sure there’s any need really.

Engine wise, I could get an exhaust, but I’m wary, as I really enjoy the induction sound the car makes now, and past experience has told me you can end up drowning this out and ending up with a bassy drone. It certainly spoiled my old ITR when I fitted a loud backbox. If it genuinely adds to the experience and does not detract from it, I’d consider it, but I’m yet to be totally convinced by anything I’ve seen yet.

If I wanted to go mad, I could spend 2k on ITBs, but then it would cease to be a cheap car! It would sound absolutely awesome but I’ve heard some say they can be a bit tiring. Alternatively I could super or turbo charge but I really want to leave it N/A, as it’s so satisfying to drive at the moment. Although she seems in good health, she does have a fair few miles on so reliability is likely going to be better with an N/A solution.

Ultimately though I’ll most likely just drive and enjoy it really. I made the mistake with the Mini of spending money on more modifications to try and improve it further, and ended up making it less fun, and losing a load of money in the process. I’m sure this car can be improved, but just not sure it's worth the return on investment and there’s a certain joy in a car that’s cheap and cheerful, especially when it’s as good as this car already is. However, never say never…

I can’t see myself getting rid of this car for quite a while. If I did, it’d have to be something uber special like a high-end Elise ( and less usable overall), or perhaps an ND MX5 with the BBR mods - but that would cost several times what I paid for this and it’s basically a very similar car. However, I’m not sure I will bother, because for what I paid for it, this car really does tick pretty much every box.

I’ll keep you posted on any updates smile

Thanks all for the nice comments, good to see these cars get some love, they are bargains for what they are. Even if I'd not found this one, I'd have been tempted to get a tidy standard one and send it straight to BBR to get the work done, as I reckon it transforms them.

To answer a few of the queries...

Really nice looking MX5 and I can't say I've ever heard of the BBR Super 200, but it sounds like a worth while package to have.

Out of interest, what's the with Lexus style rear lights and chrome strip above the windscreen? Everything else looks perfect, but these two things make the car look (imho) very Halfords.
For more information on the Super 200 (I was meant to link to it in the original article), see here: https://bbrgti.com/products/bbr-mx-5-nc-super-200

As snotrag has pointed out, these are standard features on this car - though I'm not 100% sure on the rear lights. I also used to take the piss out of Lexus style lights, but you don't really see them a lot now and because the car has chrome everywhere, I don't actually mind too much laugh

Nice! I do like a launch edition.

I had a 2008 NC in the gorgeous deep red colour, sold it for a GT86.

I’m back in the market for another 2 seater but I’ve been spoilt by turbo cars and would miss the low down torque… I guess that’s where the BBR turbo kits come in…
Yep, in fact, Jayemm reviewed the BBR Turbo here...

He also reviewed the BBR Super 200 here. His review of the car was partially responsible for me buying one.

Ever considered a Honda S2000?
Thanks.

I did actually consider an S2000 as well. I've had a couple of Type R Honda's (DC2 and FN2), so I do love a fast Honda.

I actually missed out on a bargain, a real minty example went for 8k recently on eBay, but I didn't have the settlement money at the time, and it was gone the following morning frown

That said, I did have some concerns about the S2000:

  • They rust almost as bad as an MX5
  • The rusting can prevent getting alignment done - expensive fix
  • The engine is gutless at normal road speeds - solved with a remap but more
  • The engine is bespoke, and some of them have gone bang (possibly user error), but they're Boxster money to fix if that happens
  • The handling is said to be a bit edgy, and a few people have written these off, commonly because VTEC kicks in mid-corner
I do love them, but I reckon the BBR Super 200 is probably more flexible give or take driving due to the torque (an extra 15 lb ft, at a much lower rpm), though it's not going to sound as good or have the ferocity at the top end of the revs, however, I found that a problem with the Type-Rs because I was so focused on keeping it in VTEC, you end up driving like a cock laugh Although as said above, a remap can help with that as it lowers the VTEC engagement, I had a similar setup on my FN2 and it does transform the car. Additionally I feel the MX5 probably handles better - or at least - more friendly than the S2000 which will be less forgiving.

Thanks again for the comments, if anyone has any other questions feel free to fire away smile

On the assumption that your NC was standard - dont automatically think the turbo is needed. When you do the manifold change and get the ECU unlocked the 2.0 litre NC is a much, much more tractable engine, from low down, and you also get full power in the lower gears (Full throttle in a standard car is not actually full throttle in 1st, 2nd and 3rd).
I guess it depends how much torque you want really, you're right though it is a very tractable engine for an N/A, up there for one the best I've had for a 4 cylinder, and actually more so than my old 3.2 litre Boxster S (despite what the figures say). It produces the same amount of torque at 3,500 rpm as the standard NC does at 5,000 rpm, and has about 22 lb ft more at peak (still at 850 rpm less than stock). It also produces peak power (+40 bhp) at 800 rpm higher so the power band will be so much useful than stock.

That said, it still doesn't have the sheer wallop of a Turbo. However, you can get the BBR Super 200 kit and then add a super or turbo charger if it's not enough performance for you. Personally I'd go for S/C for the noise and response (one thing I really enjoyed about the R53). 300 bhp is quite achievable with these cars, but I'm not entirely convinced it would be as reliable as leaving it N/A, and would then become a different animal. You can still drive hard in this BBR 200 without the speeds becoming too silly, but it'll still be a licence loser if you want it to be. I think the Turbo would just be an exercise in restraint laugh

Congrats OP, that looks lovely.
Some 7 years ago I narrowed my choice down to S2000, Boxster & BBR MX-5. The S2000's engine is lovely but lacks low down pull and I don't trust the handling. The Boxster doesn't become a sports car until it's doing silly speeds and any little odd noise would get my credit card worried. So I ended up with a BBR that's got 135,000 on the clock. At any speed it's fun, I just moved it 5 yards to get the bins out & even that gave me a thrill. It's never missed a beat and it's perfect for car club activities. Wonderful cars.
Another high miler thumbup Amazing how smooth the engine is for the age / mileage / state of tune.

It does use a little oil when driven hard - maybe 0.5 ltr / 1000 miles but I just keep a close eye on it. I'm going to start keeping records of that just in case there's a problem but I've read elsewhere these early NC's do tend to use a bit.

Sounds like we have similar tastes and opinions on cars. I know exactly what you mean about the Porsche and that feeling that financial doom might be around the corner. As a naturally paranoid person, this weighed heavier on my mind than I anticipated. In 6 months I had a £700 bill for a suspension / top mounts refresh and alignment and then it wouldn't start, thought it was the battery, changed it, still didn't start, had to get breakdown out who got it going, but hardly inspired confidence.

Which BBR package do you have on yours?

Lovely looking MX5, the BBR SS kit really does make a huge difference to them. My brother bought an NC 3.5 Venture (based on the 2.0 Sport, with the folding hard top) last year and has had the BBR SS kit put on it, transformed the engine, plenty of power now and much more pleasant to drive, he has also had a full stainless exhaust with a 200 cell sports cat put on (no idea which one but it has removable baffles in the back box if you want more noise, he’s left them in as it sounds just right now, like an old school Italian sports car but not too loud and doesn’t drone at motorway speeds), he had Meister coil overs and RX8 anti roll bars fitted and a full geometry setup done, handles perfectly, lowered just enough and actually rides much nicer than stock (much better dampening). He done some other bits and bobs (sound dreading in the boot and under the roof compartment and in the doors, much quieter on the motorway, the seat lowering brackets, a decent Pioneer double din head unit with CarPlay and AndroidAuto, some nice JBL speakers in the doors, had the orig wheels refurbed a darker colour and some spacers so it sits right, he does want different wheels at some point though, full rust proofing done at Penryn Garage, car only has 20k on it and looks like it’s never seen salted roads). Bang for buck it’s one of the most fun and rewarding cars I’ve ever driven.

Here’s a pic of him and my niece out for a blast in it the other week in North Wales taken by one of those car spotter people who post pics of cars on the Evo triangle roads in NW

Interesting thoughts and a lovely MX5 your brother has there thumbup

It really is such a fun car to drive, and can be used properly on the road without breaking the law or driving dangerously, though we do intend to track it this year which should be fun!
He’s considered changing it for a Cayman or Boxster but just doesn’t see how he would get 3-4 times more enjoyment out of one compared to the MX5 for the 3-4 times cost to buy one (let alone the running and upgrade costs for one!).
Exactly, that is one thing that impresses me most about it, is the fact it's always fun even when not breaking the limit, though it is more than capable of doing so.

As for the Boxster, that's what I came from, and I'm getting more fun and enjoyment out of the mx5, make of that what you will smile the Boxster does have a certain feel good factor given it's a porsche, it's certainly a lovely engine, and it does have a better ride and more refinement, but otherwise the mx5 is hands down better to drive for me.

Great thread, not sure how I missed it previously.

I remember messaging you years ago when I had an RS Limited.

Funny we are both in super 200's now.

I often contemplate going the opposite way to a Boxster, (entirely for the flat 6) but very interesting to read your views. Gerraint Thomas who has a similar thread also said stay with the BBR.

Otherwise ITB’s are often on my mind but I’m worried it could be a step too far.

Off for a spin, will upload a pic later
We must both have impeccable taste biggrin

I must confess I do wish in a way I'd had a little more time with the Boxster, as I felt it was cut short prematurely, but it's definitely a more sensible, laid back type of car. As standard they are quite muted as well, I had mine booked in for bypass valves 3 days after the accident happened, so I never got to find out what that would have been like, but I think it would have made all the difference.

I'm always thinking about ITBs as well, but like you, wonder if it would be too much, and also, I have better things to spend that sort of money on at this stage - the most important thing will be to make sure the bodywork is sorted before winter, so that if I do decide to go that route, the car is fundamentally sound.

I've just been out just now, great fun as always. Enjoy! biggrin

Hi mate. The boxster was written off about 3 months ago, I was driving down the A68 when I was hit by one of these 'objects' from this tractor going the other way, at a pretty high closing speed.

Very annoying but what can you do. I got the insurance details, they paid out and that was that.

Thanks for the tip about the undersealing. I understand it won't be cheap but what sort of price ball park should I expect if you know?

I was more annoyed at the time than anything else and once I'd regained my composure I turned around and caught them up. I didn't really expect it to be a write off at the time but clearly a combination of the cars age and Porsche tax for parts meant it was inevitable. At least I got only slightly less than I paid which was good.

£700 isn't as bad as I thought. I was expecting over £1k for a proper job. I'll give them a buzz before the summer is out and get it booked in. Thanks for the heads up.

I may have identified an issue. The oil usage seems very much on the high side, my early estimates are around the 1.5 - 2 litre / 1000 miles mark. If I were to pin a number on it, I'd say around 1.8 litres / 1000.

Now, I do drive it hard, always using the revs (it's what MX5s are about after all). It is at the end of the day, a 17 year old engine, with 137K on the clock, and running 40 bhp more than stock, so maybe this is to be expected, but I'd probably suggest it should use less, what do you think? I am keeping a weekly eye on it so no danger of it going low, but still. I have read on the grapevine that these early NC engines do like a drink of the black stuff when being used hard.

Most likely I'll ring my local MX5 specialist this week for advice, but there we have it. While it's there, I'll get them to give the whole car a once over, make sure everything else is tip top, and enquire about their own rust treatment service.

On another note, I heard a classic Mini going up the road, and it was clearly running ITBs, and now it's made me want those even more laugh

Had many fun trips out in the MX5 now. Love the performance and handling. I'm getting used to it now, it's a quick car with 200 bhp, the handling is always hilarious fun and the brakes are more than up for the challenge of some hooligan driving on B roads. At the same time, some of my most fun drives are at, or close to the NSL. It's not a car that requires you to drive at warp speed, which is one thing I love about it, so it's a great car for enjoying on British B roads.

Networkgeek will be pleased to know I've decided to do some small cosmetic modifications to scale back on the non-OEM chrome, which were the tail light surrounds, wing mirror trims and the "cheesegrater" Lockwood Grille. Basically the car looks completely standard (LE) now other than being slightly lowered, and all the better for it IMO.

Grille before: -

Grille after: -

Grille after being washed (as well as I could before the football started laugh): -

Lights before: -

Lights after: -

Unfortunately I've spotted some bodywork issues, such as what appears to be rust forming around the indicator on one side (BTW, I have the original orange flashers, I was tempted to swap back to those??): -

And there's some weird bubbling / paint flaking appearing on the tailgate. My plan was to take this to get rust treatment before the winter properly sets in, so I might have to get this seen to as well: -

After I washed it, I couldn't help myself but take some photos of it in it's current state. Still looks quite good for 17 years and 137K!

Next steps are for this car are get the rust treatment and health check done in October just to be sure the car is generally sound and worth investing time and money in. I really hope it is as I absolutely adore it, such a blast to drive.

Then I am thinking about a few mods. Exhaust is one, but I have to be careful here, it would be easy to make it too loud along with that manifold I reckon, as it already sounds pretty rorty even as completely standard. I could potentially gain 5 bhp though, and a better look than the current "pea shooter" exhausts. I am thinking of something like the below (debadged looks pretty cool also but likely to leave a ghost image after so long): -

I'd also like to investigate the possibility of a modded final drive ratio for shorter gears as I reckon that would be hilarious (I'm advised the FD from a 1.8 LSD model should do it), and potentially a lightweight flywheel.

Other mods will be quality of life upgrades, like a touch screen Android Auto stereo, refurb the seats, gas/service the AC, clean/replace the soft top (I will sell the hard top to fund this), get some bodywork done and enjoy.

I still keep thinking of ITBs though evil

All in all I am enjoying the journey with this car, and for the first time I am genuinely pondering whether I could ever sell it.

Snotrag, thanks for the useful info, much appreciated. I'd figured that I may have to go for a quieter exhaust for this setup, although in all honesty I may not bother, the last owner also thought about doing it and decided against it... We'll see.

Indeed though the priority is to get it rust treated (I'm expecting a big bill for this) and just make sure everything is all ok and then maybe start modifying it to my tastes next year.

However it drives so well now that honestly I don't think it needs too much really. Your praise for them is high praise indeed given the cars you've owned. thumbup

Did you get to the bottom of the oil consumption?
I'm keeping an eye on it for now, it does seem to be using it fairly heavily but these engines are known for it, it's a high mileage car that's been fairly heavily tuned, and it definitely gets used properly.

The other day I met some mates for camping and his theory was that I should look into getting a thicker grade of oil (currently using 5w30). When I arrived on the day the engine sounded slightly "tappy" but then it smooth again the next day, so he thought that the thicker oil might help.

I need to take it to the local mx5 specialist soon for a health check and some rust treatment, so I'm going to ask their advice on that. Until then I'll just keep a close eye on things.

I haven't been using the car as much as I'd like lately, but I did get to the end of a tank of petrol, and an interesting experiment of sorts. I took it very easy on this tank, not only to see what the car will actually do MPG wise, but also to see if gentle driving had a big effect on the oil consumption. The outcomes are it does 33 MPG in mixed, gentle, urban driving, and the oil has not gone down at all from the MAX mark which I put in when I started the tank. With hard driving I would for sure have seen a noticeable drop in the oil level, so as with some comments I've seen on the internet, it seems that the engine does indeed like to drink oil, but if kept below about 3500rpm it uses very little. Add to the fact the car is coming up to 138K and is running a fair bit more power as standard, I'm not at all concerned about it now.

The next thing in the pipeline is the MOT, servicing, and I'll get quotes for the rust treatment. There was a chap on the NC-LE facebook group recently had his checked over and he said he was quoted £5k-£7k for the repairs and rust treatment, and that they basically advised him to enjoy it for a year or so and then get rid. That would be a bit of a nightmare scenario for me, but I know the arches have been done recently, so it'll be interesting to see how much I get quoted. I don't have the appetite for a £5k repair though, I have to say.

I have been starting to think I'm falling out of love with the car and/or driving recently, but another trip out in it today confirmed that I would regret it if I sold it, but at the same time, I have been thinking about what I might get instead, in the event of moving it on, but honestly, the MX ticks a lot of boxes, it really is a very good all round car. That said, I'd still like to try something else again one day, maybe VX220T, 370Z, GT86 with some mods? However, the MX really does nail the basics, so the replacement is going to have much to live up to. It's light, RWD, cheap to run, reliable, fun to drive, what's not to like?

If I keep it though, I definitely would like to get the final drive mod, I really believe it would make all the difference and give the car a punchy, hyperactive feel with shorter gears, the exhaust for a bit more noise (with the emphasis being on sounding nice rather than loud), and the fitment of a Pioneer touchscreen headunit as the current stock BOSE setup is pretty mediocre and definitely outdated, and using a phone cradle is a cock on.

Small update from me as it's been a while since I updated this.

Car flew through the MOT with no advisories. It did need a new thermostat at it wasn't heating up properly. Amazing how quickly the thing warms up now.

On xmas day one of my suspension arms snapped, which was unfortunate timing laugh Luckily, I was able to abandon the car at a country pub and await my rescuer!

I was starting to feel like I was getting bored with it, but I reckon it's a combination between crap winter weather and just not getting out in it enough. Too many JayEmm videos gets the mind wandering. Yet it always gets under my skin again when I drive it.

I have started to get the V8 itch, but honestly, I'm not sure I can be arsed with the expense of it all. I've got a good little runabout which I've become quite attached to, so if I do keep it, I've got a few things to get done.

- Clean it, properly! It's looking very grubby at the minute.
- MeisterR coilovers and fast road setup
- Cobalt exhaust (as suggested by snotrag) or a custom made (my mate did a great job on my MR2)
- Pioneer touch screen head unit and upgraded speakers
- Make the air con blow cold again
- Rust proofing by Stagshaw Land Rover (as suggested by gad-westy)
- Potential: Bucket seats, but this is less certain. Depends on cost, ultimately.
- Potential: ITBs for the noise and about 10% more power. Very pricey.

However, that is a significant investment on an 18 year old MX5 with nearly 140K on the clock, so it does open up the possibilities of trading to a different car, would certainly welcome any thoughts on this.

The upgrades would transform the car though, and the cost of upgrading is not insignificant, and any new car is an unknown quantity and could bring with it early bills etc, not sure I can be arsed the stress!

Total investment for this car and my proposed mods would be about £10k-£12k (depending on how much I get done), I'm not sure what else I could get that would be a better all round car while also being a relatively lightweight sports car with a fairly powerful N/A engine. On the flipside, some/most of the money invested would be gone.

Doing these upgrades and then enjoying the car would however allow me to save a bit more money to buy a car that is a genuine upgrade. Something like an Evora might be a nice car to aim for, but this can be a great little stepping stone in the meantime.

Bring on spring / summer!

Thanks both. My mx5 specialist recommended the Meisters and said it would transform the car, especially the damping as you've pointed out, the car isn't too bad as is but it's noticeably more crashy than my Boxster S was (albeit that was on completely stock suspension rather than the Porsche sports suspension, and 17" wheels instead of 18), so it would be nice to address that.

I see that you can get the Sportives which are the cheaper option, height adjustable but no adjustable damping, and the ZetaCRDs which are twice the price and give you the adjustable damping, but I'm not sure I need this as I am rarely on a track.

If I did decide to stick with it I guess the important question as said is whether I get the rust proofing done first, just so I can be sure I'm modifying a solid car.

Nice looking car mate. Bet it's a lot of fun.

Personally I'd get it checked for rust, then protected properly before doing anything else.
Then if all goes well there, I'd look into the oil consumption issue. You could do a nice engine refresh for not much more than the the cost of ITBs. Ooooor, you could go mad and get BBR to do a 2.5 swap...

Either way, you'll have worry free motoring for years to comes with those items ticked off!
The oil consumption is one of the issues holding me back really.

The engine is high miles, and it tends to use very little oil when driven sedately (rare), but quite a bit when driven hard (often). The engine is very smooth and runs well, no knocking, no visible smoke that I can see.

The specialist said it wouldn't get any better, but should last for quite some time yet as long as I keep an eye on it.

The issue is, whether the cost of the rust treatment + potentially an engine rebuild + all the other mods makes it worthwhile as the total cost of the car plus all that work could see me into another car really. This is a decision I'm not taking lightly as whatever I get next might well end up being my 'forever' car.

This is a really useful thread for me. I was considering a 986, but some journalist comments on a podcast made me question whether it was for me, and your experience seems to support that.

I’m after a fun third car, and saw an NC2/Mk3.5 BBR 200 advertised recently with a nice specification and a reasonable mileage and price. Unfortunately my shifts and family life didn’t allow me to go and see it before it sold. Buying a standard car and matching that specification always sees me spending more money than that one was advertised for, which is aggravating! I’d be looking at an NC2 as (AIUI) they have a stronger crankshaft and a higher redline.

As I’ve got small children, I’m being swayed by a GT86 for the potential for using the back seats occasionally. Also, I had an MX5 NB2 a few years ago, so would be keen to have something “different” from an MX5. I would be really interested to drive a BBR200 and a GT86/BRZ back-to-back to see how they compare. It sounds from reviews like the Mazda engine post-modification would be more interesting/useful than the Toyobaru’s, but that the Subota might be sharper to drive.

I tell myself that I could have a GT86 until the children are too big to use the back seats, and then start playing with an MX5, but that will be a while and NCs aren’t getting any younger or less rusty.

Interesting read - thanks.
Glad you find it useful smile

I would definitely say if you can stretch to a later NC then it's worthwhile, it does have the better, stronger, higher revving engine and you can also get the power hard top model which really gives you the benefit of two cars in one. I also tend to find on average that the late NCs are typically better looking cars too.

The GT86 is an interesting one for sure, probably a bit expensive for me at the minute for the performance, as I'm trying to stick to cheap cars ultimately (less stress and worry), but I would like to have one maybe one day, and get the unequal length headers, manifold and map to get rid of the flat spot and give it a scooby noise and a little more power smile

Yours is the first NC I’ve ever seen with a removable hard top, and I think it looks better than the folding one. The folding top also adds about 40kg I think, and the NC isn’t exactly praised for its weight-saving. I can imagine it’s a quieter place to be for longer trips when the roof is up though.
Yeah, personally I've never really had much use for it, it's been sat in my shed basically since I bought the car. I'm going to sell it soon. It probably weighs about 20 kg but it does make a big difference to the refinement of the car, it feels like a very different car with it on, but I didn't buy it for that really.

The folding metal hard top version for me gives the best of both worlds, and although it does add even more mass, I don't suppose most people would notice it too much. Having the roof up on this basically serves one purpose, and one purpose only: keeping you dry. It certainly doesn't help with the refinement. laugh

On another note, this will be going up for sale soon. I'm not 100% sure what will replace it yet, but I am in discussions with someone about another Boxster, which will be a surprise to some after I sang the praises of this car, and I still stand by my comments that the car is more fun than a Boxster particularly at lower speeds, but I just really want a 'big' engined car again, and something with more comfort and refinement, as I am growing tired with cars that are essentially like biscuit tins on wheels biggrin
