E39 M5 - twin supercharged
Discussion
Here are a few pics, vids and info on my 1999 Avus Blue M5.
Got it bone stock in August 2005:
The mod bug bit me soon and here are a few pics taken after
I added the AA CAI, full exhaust and Hamann 19" wheels:
The sound the car made after the exhaust install was very nice
http://www.onno.is/thordur/m5/pust/M5_driveaway.wm...
http://www.onno.is/thordur/m5/pust/M5_rev.wmv
Soon after it got KWv3 coilovers and Brembo BBK:
Added some angelibrights to match the angel eyes to the headlights, here you
can see the difference:
After all these mods I took the car on a trip around Europe:
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=...
During this trip I took the car to Nurburgring where I managed
to destroy the diff. While changing my diff the BMW shop also
changed the propshaft and gearbox!!!! (read more about that in the trip thread)
But that was not bad since now the car was ready for what was coming
next....... twin superchargers!!
Had then installed in Sweden and the setup blew the engine on
day 2 after I got it back
After this setback it was decided to get another block and have
it sleeved and build a strong motor
Discrete install
Broke the new engine in on my way to the Ring and the
first run on full blast was actually on the Ring
In hindsight not smart but getting the DSC flashing at
160km/h is interesting.
Fun to drift too:
Just don´t seem to last at all!!!
Last winter I also did some "visual" mods, mostly CF
stuff (hood, splitter, kidneys, diffuser, roof&lip spoiler
and interior trim).
I´m VERY happy with the car and it´s a dream to drive. The power is
ca. 600hp/700Nm
Took it to Germany again this summer - here are 2 video clips, one high speed run
and then a comparison run with a stock M5.

launch and is fast enough
just bought a set of 4 original rear wheels with Toyo RA-1's that I´m going to try next summer.
Should take care of some of the traction and understeer issues
The running costs... yes... crazy!!! But it´s a car that brings a smile to my face everytime
I drive it
Here is another trip report from the BMW drivers training at the Ring this summer:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.ph...
I have known to like the older ones better I realize that some people don´t like the hood
but when you see it in person it looks awesome. It´s also gives the engine bay a much needed
cooling.
It´s been expensive like everything that has to do with the M5.
Why I supercharged??? It was the only way to increase the power substantially without
loosing "streetability". You can get race S62 motors with similar power but you wouldn´t want
them in your street car.
Huge fun? YOU BET!

Outstanding.

Yes - beware of the mod bug I daren't read this thread again or I'll get crazy ideas.

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll be back for even more power?
Top work though
I don´t think I will do any more power adding to this car - it´s difficult enough toTop work though

What a car. I'd have kept the original wheels (have always loved the look of them) but thats just personal preference. Nice subtle mods, huge power & it must be enormous fun to drive if you like sideways, which I do The running costs (especially tyres!) must be, er, 'a bit steep'
The Hamanns are much nicer in person than on pictures - they look awesome. However, I have just bought a set of 4 original rear wheels with Toyo RA-1's that I´m going to try next summer.

Do we dare ask how much time, money and effort went into it?
Can I just ask, what possessed you to supercharge it?
Looks like HUGE fun though!
I have a folder full of invoices but I have never added them up and never will Can I just ask, what possessed you to supercharge it?

Like others have said, not keen on the bonnet, but without it you wouldn't get the rest so needs must.
Do you own any other cars?
Nice modding. Always liked the M5. Slightly rarer I find than the M3, appeals to me.

The bonnet is the only part of the visual mods that I wasn´t 100% sure about in the beginning.Do you own any other cars?

However - I am now very happy I got it and you have to see it in person to really appreciate it.
It gives the car a much "meaner" look and tells you this is no ordinary M5
As for other cars I have a 2005 Landcruiser 120GX on 35" tires (good for winter here in Iceland) and
I also have a 1989 E30 M3 for track (the M5 is just too heavy & expensive for track use). The M3
has an 3.2 liter engine & 6spd gearbox from the E36 M3. The M3 is superharged also.

That m3 thread IS epic.. must have taken hours to compile..
As said amazing cars you have.. utterly brilliant
BTW you must let me know your line of work as im sure that a huge amount of time and money goes into this..
Yes it took a while but it was fun since I got to "relive" the whole process As said amazing cars you have.. utterly brilliant

I am a mechanical engineer and own a few small businesses that are doing
well by now I started with no money 10 years ago and started my first company
while still at university.
I have always been interested in cars - some say too much Used to read
every car magazine I could get my hands on.
I however did not buy a car until I was 27 and I was 35 when I bought the M5.
So basically I have waited long for this stuff and I´m enjoying it

Thordur, I'm loving what you are doing with this - good man.
I do have one question... how come is it all the Icelandic people I have met are the nicest, funniest loons around? For example one friend called Jon - his nickname is Nonni. Why? His friends think his nickname should be longer than his actual name. Case two: Who in their right mind found out you could put tyres back on wheels using a can of lighter fluid and a match?
Cheers again for letting us see your toys.
Don
Well "Jón" is a very formal/normal name - Nonni is a more "relaxed"/friendly one I do have one question... how come is it all the Icelandic people I have met are the nicest, funniest loons around? As for "exploding" the tires onto the rims it's probably a very logical solution when you
are stuck on top of a glacier hundreds of miles from the next garage

One question. Did that orange elise in the pictures get past you? Or did you get all the power down after you were done drifting around
That lap was actually supposed to be a "slow and easy" lap since my girlfriend wasthe passenger. However when I approached Adenauer Forst I just couldn´t resist,
disabled DSC and the rest is on those pics
She was not too happy
I chatted later with the Elise guys and they said they enjoyed the show
Just found some old video footage from 2006 and edited
it together today. Unfortunately the sound recording was
messed up so no V8 rumble.
Enjoy

I think the lesson here is that the stock M5 engine cannot cope with
huge torque levels. The block flexes too much since it´s made out of
aluminium. There is a new kit coming out that is designed by the
same guy that did my motor (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=110418)
and that will work on stock internals. This kit has lower power levels.
The boost I have been running is about 0.5 - 0.6 bar before and after
the block cracked.
I have no idea how they crashed the Carrera GT and the Ferrari but
it seemed to be a good job.
I have taken the M5 to the dragstrip on 19" street tires and my
best runs were:
12.617 @ 116.57
12.731 @ 116.27
12.613 @ 115.67
I had some traction issues and was loosing boost because of a broken
plenum cover
Hope that Toyo RA1's on 18" wheels and a CF plenum cover will fix this

Been installing some new stuff. Replaced the blow off valves with
another ones that are just a tiny bit bigger
Finally got the new CF plenum cover and when installing it I also replaced
the idle control valve.
Here I have removed all the stuff on top of the motor:
The idle control valve is the part with the green sticker.
Parts all over the place:
New valve installed:
Everything being reassembled again:
The new plenum cover:
Had to source new bolts since the original ones didn´t fit:
Plenum cover on:
All hoses on and tightened:
Lo and behold.... it started up again

Are you taking the m5 to the ring this year?
or just sticking with the M3?
No the M5 stays in Iceland this year. Are you taking the m5 to the ring this year?
or just sticking with the M3?
As for the oil.... can I change oil with fewer bottles
I took the car for a road trip this weekend - went camping.
When I suggested to my girlfriend that we should take the
M5 she replied "But it will just break down?!?!?!?!"
I of course said no - and I was right. 1.160km without problems.
