I would be interested to know if it works. Would do the same for my other half. I hope you have been keeping well
GL? All good thx. I'm not sure a full 911 drivetrain has been done (2/3 of one has!), I assume it would need half the floor pan too... there are other options like 914 swap which bolts right in and gives 100bhp over the sewing machine they came with but I'm not sure if that opens up an auto option; there isn't really for a bug engine swap that I know of. I also have to have a/c, the original engine just isn't going to cut it. I think I'm going to have to do this in the US to be honest but thought I'd check the UK 'scene' first, but it doesn't appear to exist! Digga said:
Would a 718 drivetrain not make for an easier and, perhaps more fitting conversion? Must be one or two that have been written off by now, both sides of the pond.
10/10 for completely insane idea, I love it but that's an absolutely monumental project! I think for that to work you wouldn't so much be putting a 718 power train in a 356 as putting a 356 looking body on a 718 floorpan. The 356 is very basic and flimsy to say the least and I really want to keep the engine flat config in any event. The 914 F4 engine swap is the most promising for an 'easy' 200bhp and just bolts in but I'm struggling to find a slush box that would work with it. Now I'm looking for a suitable box that is easily controlled/progammed with an after market ecu. After talking to some US engine builders no one likes the idea of using an auto and neither no I but that's not the point; the Mrs doesn't like driving manual any more. Unfortunately I know almost nothing about hateful slush boxes so I'm a bit out of my depth but enjoying learning as I go...ReaderScars said:
What about amalgamating something like a Chesil Speedster body with a Boxter chassis?
356 look kit with Subaru power, auto and a/c out the box is the obvious, most cost effective, simplest, most reliable, fastest and most comfortable solution. It's also like giving her cubic zirconia not diamond and inconveniently she knows the difference! Got to be a 356 with Porsche power. If it was easy it wouldn't be fun. MDL111 said:
is that the yellow one which was on the market for from memory c 90k - I love that car and seriously thought about it (then I realised I would probably crash it)
Possibly. They registered as a manufacturer and made 3 with Alzen VIN's (so that they could sell their old cup (not road legal) shells. This is the one i bought.https://www.total911.com/sales-spotlight-porsche-9...

Retropower probably the people I'd ask on something as bonkers as that.
A friends Manta (with Skyline drivetrain) built there is actually a usable, functional car rather than purely a showpiece.
The Manta sounds epic, love it. Thanks for the lead with Retropower, will look them up...A friends Manta (with Skyline drivetrain) built there is actually a usable, functional car rather than purely a showpiece.

yup that is the one I kept coming back to for months and thinking should I or shouldn't I ... congrats, am sure it is amazing to drive .
It's a properly brilliant car. Having sworn i'd never sell my faithful old cup car im now thinking its pointless keeping it, the Alzen slaughters it. Thanks for not buying it... I think it's a better car than my old 993GT2!Edited by anonymous-user on Thursday 1st August 14:34

Hi All,
I'm UK based and in the process of do this actual conversion. Well I should say WAS. After much research I have concluded that there is no way of getting this past the DVLA without ending up on a 'Q' plate and going through an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test.
The problem is the chassis/monocoque is radically modified and this means you fall foul of the points system.
As much as a read the DVLA site I can't see any way round this legally and keeping the original number plate (or same year plate) or the plate of the donor 964. I don't want to be looking over my shoulder all the time and a 'Q' plate is a non starter as it will devalue the car to much.
I've already bought my 356 and 964, got a Dean Polopolus 'Polo' 911 4 cylinder engine kit on order. Teach me to jump the gun.
Need to seek advice if I am really correct in my assumption. I'll head over to the Kit car forum, I think they will have a lot of experience in this area.
Thanks for your post. I hadn't considered it to be honest. I assumed you'd just register the increased capacity on the 356 v5.I'm UK based and in the process of do this actual conversion.
