Today in our regular 'Iguana investigates' slot- the Lizard may have haplessly stumbled across a top secret Porsche idea.......

Spotted in Evo this month that 'Authoritative reports from the US' suggest a front engined- RWD Porsche is on the cards & that it would be an entry level car in the sub £35-35k bracket. Possibly a coupe or Saloon could this finally be a 944/68 replacement??

Bear with me on this next tangent coz just across the page to this snipet article is a statement from GM boss ref the GM Lightning concept car (Vx220 replacement) that now won't happen.

He says new crash regs make it very difficut to produce a front engined sports car as you now have to have 10cm of space over the engine & that the only solution he can see is a flat engine- like a subaru....

Soooooo putting 2 and 2 together & ref the front engined porker idea, anyone else thinking what I am (no- not the thing about Kylie covered in baby oil) simply that a certain manufacturer of products pork flavored is rather well known for engines a la horizontally opposed......

So not only is there a possible posible option that Porsche may at last admit its huuuuuuuuge error in never bringing out a replacemnt for the excellent 944/68, but also there is the slim posibilty that porsche could at last place a a tuneful flat six at the correct end of the car

Hmmmmm I can just see it now, bung in a GT3 engine, have a cabin as devoid of creature comforts as your average Stalag, brakes from messers big & red at Brembo, kidney hugging seats from the nice chaps at Recaro, & suspension from Herr Bilstein esq, a skip at Stuttgart filled with un-necessary lardy crap & poncy drivers aids- and you could have ladies & gentlemen a 968CS for the new milenium......

Also, why not make it an air cooled flat-6

The problem is young Diver that the noise & emissions nazis have killed off air cooled engines, so alas it will never be a reality as a new car.

Nowt to stop you bunging one in a 944 tho.... oh and a 993 turbo lump gets my vote- an easily achivable and unstressed 500bhp- lovely jubbly

what is the weight of those 993 engines?

Oh blimey Blue lets not go through all that 911 engines vs Ultima power plants again

I'm not sure of the 993 turbo engine weight, but a normal N/A 3.6 993 lump is 232kg & the 964 3.6 (single) turbo lump is 276kg.

Just seems the price of a unit ready for a rebuild at £3k.
I have not seen anything you can put straight in and use for much less than £5k.

If you can buy a good 993 engine for £3k,it would make a lot of sense to stick one in a 3.2 carrera, rather than spend the £2-£3k they need on an inevitable top end re-build.

Fair enough £3k is pretty bargain basement level I admit, but I know of engines bought for £3k & good units too, (however I've also paid £5k when one was needed in a hurry tho) so I know £3k is possible but you do have to search for 'em.

As an example a 993 engine & all ancilaries inc exhaust is in 911 & PW this month for £3.6K it states 15,000km which id take with a pinch of salt, but still as long as you check it out properly it could be a bargain.

People do put 993 lumps in 3.2s etc Im sure 911 & PW did a feature a while back- I can't find the mag at the mo but 9m did it if I recall correctly.
