Hey everyone

having previously enjoyed Porsche ownership with a 987 Boxster S am thinking of taking the plunge again with the 911. Am thinking of C2, Man, Coupe and of course, a hoot to drive. Can anyone advise as to the merits of the 993 vs 996? In addition, how much of a war chest for repairs, servicing etc. The car would be used as daily driver if possible, approx 10000k per annum. Find myself drawn towards the air cooled car, but nice examples must be icreasingly hard to find...

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for all the advice........it's certainly a lot of fun looking through the classifieds! Will drive both as per the advice. I was expecting the 996 to be a subtle evolution from the 993 but it seems that this is not the case.

Value for money the 996 wins hands down (especially if you can afford some protection - see www.hartech.org buyers guide Lifetime Maintenance Plan or Porsche's warranty scheme) but equally for a classic investment in a little used sports car (that the buyer wants to reflect the past rather than the present) the 993 fits that bill much more - actually partly due to the very nature of its manufacture and old fashioned technology.

Sorry about failed quote above. Was trying to ask if 996 would be eligible for an opc warranty? Do they not have an age restriction?

Fingers crossed Porsche won’t make a Cock up on the next model so we can enjoy a quality SH 911 few years time.
As long as it doesn't look like the 996 they should be onto a winner!
I wouldn't be surprised if it looks like a cross between the 993 and 997, round lights and hips like a proper 911 should have.......... Not long now til we see ;-)
Im just praying that the 998 is no bigger than the 997. The obsession with manufacturers making new models bigger is one of my pet hates.

If I wanted a bigger car, I would buy one!!!

Am sure the spy shots suggest it may be larger?

Any view that doesn't involve those lights! I know it's been said ad nauseam but they ruin the clean lines of the front of the car, IMO of course.

Tbh, I was struggling to find the words to explain my dislike of them but wanted to justify my statement! And I still can't, having just sat here for 10 minutes with a clean slate..........

Baz, the problems with the water cooled engines are well documented in these forums. Do you have any idea as to the failure percentage per engines manufactured? In addition, are the air cooled engines prone to problems? They can't be bulletproof. Apparently a Honda engine is though - never broken down?

Less than 5% has been mentioned before...............
Wow - that seems unacceptably high to me. When I purchased my boxster the salesman never mentioned that wink

Totally unfounded myth, just look on the Honda S2000 forums and see how many have gone pop after 100k miles... Estimated life for one of those is around 130k miles.
Really, Im sure they have said it recently in an advert. Mind you, it might be worded in a 'special way'.biglaugh

The power of advertising! May also have mentioned on topgear I think.
