Just had the coil packs changed as the car was misfiring. Whilst there it was noticed that compression was down on cylinders 1&3 so I'm looking at the rebuild possibilities. I'm hoping it's just rings but...

It doesn't appear there's any 4.2 cylinder liners around at the moment. Anyone got some put aside? The alternative is to go 4.5 but that gets very expensive as I'll need lots such as crank, pistons, liners etc... frown

Thanks all. I've no idea what condition the engine is in yet. Replacing the coils has got rid of the misfire but compression is low on pots 1 &3 and I had an oiled plug. Drove it home last night and it didn't seem too bad so I'm forever the optimist that it shouldn't be too bad. The engines around 55K miles.

I'm going to get the engine out next month and sent to Jason at Str8six, I think he's the best specialist for this, but he has no window to do it until after 16th October, so I've around a month to sort something out.

Scerbera - if your liners are good then I'll be interested. If not required I'll keep them as spares as I plan to hang onto my car for a long time yet.
Jhonno - thanks for the hint for Westwood liners, I'll contact them and see what they say.

Oh well, engines the only thing left that hasn't been touched since it came from the factory. It really will be like a new car after all the work over the last 5 years!

Oiled plug could be valve guides/stem seals? Does it smoke on overrun?
Hard to tell and was my thought, I'm told it's smokey on one side. Now the doubts there, I'll get it stripped and looked over.
Perhaps chasing that McLaren P1 at Spa wasn't a good idea (yes it was biggrin )

Just to be cheery, does it use much coolant? Low compression and smokey exhaust (especially if white) could be a cracked/porous block.
Nope - no coolant loss and nothing more than the usual tiny bit of oil top up every 1000 miles or so. Since the MOT it's done 1800 miles, off to Spa and around the track, other journeys, and only needed a little top up.

Depends what liners you have currently.. Crank and rods are the same.. If you have the "Siamese" liners you can bore them out to 91mm. The cost will then just be pistons and boring.

Westwood liners are making some for another 4.2 owner currently, worth a call?
Westwood liners make the AJP liners for TVR Power and only to their design, so they are only available through Dom
