1994 Corolla clunking and clonking

Our somewhat weary Corolla 1.3 12 v/v 5 speed manual has recently developed a sort of erratic clinking/clunking sound from the front end. It is not the sort of loose sounds you get from something hanging loose, more a 'greasy' engine sort of clonk. Sometimes on dead flat road, but usually where it is a little rough.
Several inspections and replacement parts have solved nothing. Local guys replaced the outer CV joints and front struts a few months back, but the noise has appeared since then, though not immediately after.
I have looked myself and all I can see that is amiss is the inner CV joint housing appears to move radially a few mm. I know it runs into a spline, with a seal, but nobody seems to be able to tell me how much play is acceptable. The CV joints themselves seem okay, no movement in them.
Do these inner CV joint housings simply pull out, or is there a Circlip on the inside?
There was also a sort of whirring sound that appears as speed builds up, and doesn't disappear when the clutch is dipped. Yesterday we changed a rear wheel bearing and this seems to have disappeared, but I've only driven it briefly since then.

King Herald as mentioned already look for up and down play on the front anti-roll bar drop links even the smallest amount of play will drive you nuts 
I've pulled and pushed and banged on everything I can see, so have the garage guys (to a degree) but I can find nothing obvious. I go offshore again tomorrow so it'll have to wait until I get back in six weeks now. Maybe something obvious will develop while the wife is driving it. Still, engine oil change, gearbox oil change, one new rear wheel bearing, all four brakes inspected, and a general under-chassis inspection: £50
